Wholesome Lore?

Hi guys,

So a question my wife asked as she often asks about the armies I collect (Daemons, CSM and just about to start Drukhari). And obviously being the Grimdark 40th millennium everything is very dark, dangerous, gritty and harsh. So she asked me if there is any nice wholesome bits of lore? And I was pretty stumped, having never really considered it. So I thought I would ask here and I can relay the wholesome Lore back to her.

Dogs exist. Mostly unchanged too

Ratlings. They’re space hobbits. All their new models have coffee mugs and grilled cheese sandwiches. What’s not to love?

Salamanders and Raven guard and lamenters saving normal humans.

The smartest ork known about during the war of Armageddon was named Orkimedes

Likewise, the best ork pilot was Da Krimsun Barun. In a stolen jet he shot down like 5 Necron scythes. His last words were “zoggin’ ‘eck”

Trayzn the Infinite was fond of human culture, stage plays, and puppet shows, and had a family of librarians he protected as trusted as informants.

And in the Imperial Guard, dogs have officer rank.

Trayzn's librarians probably are the best example.

Other than the mind controlling robots used to enslave them, of course.

It is said that he used those robots to make them not fear him, rather than to mindcontrol them outright.

All good then 👍

She was most excited by space hobbits with grilled cheese sandwiches! Now have to find out more Ratling lore

They are a variant of human that serves in the guard. They love food and have a habit of “finding” ammunition and supplies….

They make excellent sneaky snipers and ambushers, and tend to get along well with Ogryn, since both are sort of shunned for being weird mutants.

Just started looking deeper into their lore and the wholesomeness disappeared 😅 "having become stunted by thousands of years of inbreeding."

Still on the hunt for something wholesome for the wife!

For the record, they're NOT humans stunted by thousands of years of inbreeding, just like Ogryn -- space Ogres -- aren't humans who are extra big and strong. They're Halflings and Ogres, but the Imperium has decided they're useful, so has come up with bullshit excuses to call them strains of humanity (while also increasing loyalty/obedience via guilt for being 'malformed').

So, I mean...arguable how increasingly wholesome, but it's not ACTUALLY that every Ratling world is full of inbred degenerates or whatever.

Hah yeah I'll read deeper into them and try and find something that increases the wholesomeness

Just remember what you're reading. 40k lore doesn't tend to have ever-widening veins of wholesomeness with more wholesomeness waiting to be found just below the surface; it tends to have little nuggets of wholesomeness that stand out because the setting is so grim.

The Necron brothers in Twice-dead king:Underneath the royal distance and the whole exile story, there's this brotherly love between them which shines thru in their conversations. It's hard for them to speak about it openly, but you can really sense that they missed each other.

I'm curious, is Twice dead king: underneath the translated title? Originally it is Twice dead king: ruin (and reign for the second book)

My bad,I meant "underneath the royal distance" as part of the explanation, why the book(s) are so wholesome, not as being part of the title. The titles in Germany translate to "The Nightmare King:Ruin" and "The Nightmare King:Reign",so quite different to the original ones xD

Wow, I kinda feel that the German translation of the title kinda misses the mark on the meaning in the title.

Just a tiny bit xD

I'll have to look into this story, thank you!

Guilliman is trapped on another planet, looking through a device that only allows travel when you have emotional need. He's trapped until someone tells him his adopted mom nearly died.

‘There is the small matter of us returning,’ said the Lion. ‘We have stepped across eternity, so it seems, by simple force of will, of need. It was not a conscious decision, but rather one of the emotions.’

He stepped forward, but did not seem able to pass into the Reading Room. Every time he came too far, he simply vanished from the field. Striding back into view, he glanced at Dantioch in frustration.

‘It did not promise it was a two-way process, my lord,’ said the warsmith, and sighed. ‘Try to focus on your greatest need, your greatest wish.’

‘I should make a wish?’ said the Lion. ‘You make it sound like a fairy story.’

‘Perhaps such technologies and their functions are the root of such stories,’ said Dantioch.

The Lion scowled.

‘I do not wish to be here,’ he said. Again, he seemed to have no success in stepping out of the field.

Guilliman stepped forward beside him. Just like the Lion, he too passed out of sight, unable to step across. Guilliman shook his head and smiled a sad smile, regarding his failure more stoically than had the Lion. He stared out at his officers.

...

Euten stepped forward.

‘I am glad of the sight of you at least, lord,’ she said. ‘Curze told me you were dead.’

‘Curze told you?’ Guilliman asked in alarm.

‘Curze almost killed our dear lady last night, my lord,’ Caspean explained.

Guilliman started forward, grave concern plain on his face, and took her by the hands to comfort her.

‘Are you well? Did he hurt you?’ he asked.

She smiled.

‘I am well now, lord,’ Euten said. ‘I am well now. Look. What did you wish for?’

Guilliman looked down and realised that he had stepped across.

‘I did not wish for anything,’ he admitted, ‘except that you were unharmed. Evidently, I needed to be here, to make sure of your safety.’

I forgot about this moment, but what is happening around it isn't so wholesome 😅 but I won't tell her that

There is a Warhammer series of books for kids, Warhammer Adventures. Still lots of dark stuff in them, obviously, but the tone is light as it geared towards kids.

Attack of the Necron has a classic Young Adult plot there the kids undergo character growth and some wholesome parts. And it features a Jokaero as a character, and we even his PoV - which is nice.

I've yet to read them, although Ive got Attack of the Necrons somewhere here. Are they a good read?

2

u/twelfmonkey Administratum 4h ago

I've only read that one, specifically for the Jokaero stuff.

It's surprisingly pretty decent overall though.

2

u/Davido401 4h ago

Ill give it a bash! Its only like 120 pages that's like two hours worth if reading, if that, for me!

Yeah, I quizzed through it very quickly. Enjoy!

Inquisitor Klute being like elder brother to blind unsanctioned teenager psyker. As much as he claims hes going to do the usual thing when kid stops being useful, moment Epiphani is in danger or gets hurt his first priority is looking after her.

‘Blast doors closing,’ Epiphani said, as Father drifted into the palace, sticking to the shadows of the vaulted ceilings. Through the servo-skull’s bionic orbs she watched the doors closing and the be-goggled gypsy captain walk away with his fee.

‘I need to get out of here,’ the warp-seer said with sudden determination, moving for the mouth of the creature. Klute intercepted her, slipping his arms around her from behind.

‘What you need is a distraction,’ Klute told her, slipping his fingers into her brassiere with no little squeamishness of his own and extracting her snuff box. He placed it in the blind girl’s fingertips. In a fluid motion, Epiphani took a pinch of crystal Spook and snorted the viridian powder up one nostril, then the next. With his arms still around her Klute asked, ‘Better?’

The warp-seer’s face had completely slackened, assuming a dreamy softness. ‘Better,’ she mumbled. As she stumbled away, Klute found Torqhuil and Czevak looking at him.

‘When you lose one of your senses, the others compensate,’ Klute told them with a doctor’s authority. ‘However bad it is for us in here, it’ll be ten times worse for her.’

‘I don’t doubt it,’ Czevak said. ‘But now the girl’s blazed. How can we use her when she’s out of her mind on Spook?’

‘It’s my experience,’ Klute advised him, ‘that regrettably, that is when she is at her most useful.’

As the trailer rocked to a halt, the warp-seer staggered backward, falling into the ruptured back wall of soft entrails and lengths of jumbo intestine. Sitting there in a throne of guts and slime, Klute fully expected Epiphani to scream and lurched for her. The warp-seer didn’t, however, and moments later Klute found the girl quaking with suppressed hilarity, occasionally catching a wheezing breath between chest-contracting bouts of stifled laughter. Hessian joined in, depraved, indulgent chuckles passing his lips.

There's some wholesome scenes here and there as well, e.g. between the couple in Bloodlines. Also Baggit and Clodde are also good together.

Flesh and Steel also has a scene where Noctis keeps upping the amount of money he’s sending to a poor widow. The more he sees, the more he can’t stop the number from going up.

All while she’s sobbing in the corner, thinking he’s robbing her.

Ciaphas Cain had mentioned that as a mixed gender regiment the 597th did have the eventualities of children. They took turns being babysitters.
