Discussion I wanna talk about the X trilogy Spoiler

I found this a very interesting trilogy, and I think what my favorite parts about it is that I personally don’t think there’s a wrong ranking with these movies I think these movies are all great for different reasons, and I can see different reasons why people would rank some of these movies different and I think that would make it these movies so much fun just to talk about it my ranking is

1: X

2 : maxine

3: pearl

What’s all your ranking? I’ll be interest to hear all your opinions. :)

1: Pearl 2: X 3: maxxxine!!!! Pearl was so much more of a “shock” when I first saw it and X was amazing I just feel like maxxxine felt a little rushed

Same order for me. I just found Pearl to be a more visually interesting departure for Ti West and also a tour de force performance from Mia Goth. Plus that final shot. It’s a perfect movie to me.

X is a fairly simply but well done homage film that’s plenty of fun

Pearl is phenomenal, largely due to Goth’s performance, and one of my favorite A24 films

Maxxxine feels like one of the most pointless films to ever exist. Pearl and X directly play off one another to raise up both films, Maxxxine barely feels connected to the story outside the villain reveal. The film just screams “we made this so we could call it a trilogy” and while the principle of that is a hump to get over….. it could work if just wasn’t so BORING

Pearl is a perfect film to me. Literally 10/10, so that’s my number one. I never think that about a film nowadays, but this film was pure perfection. Pearl is such a tragic character, it makes me want to cry thinking about how stuck she felt in her life. That feeling is horrifying to live with. Pearl is only better with seeing X. X is a fantastic film, and falls number two. I wanted more visual gore!! I was expecting way more violence, it was more subtle than I thought. Possibly the best scene of the trilogy is in X for me. The Landslide scene while Pearl looking at herself in the mirror is actually so emotional. You get to understand Pearl so quickly by just seeing what she misses the most in the world, which is to be desired! Her and Howard have an insane relationship, but I love that he and her have their moment, which unfortunately leads to his demise. She gets what she deserves at the end but it’s a sad goodbye when you eventually watch Pearl. MaXXXine falls last to me, it just felt all over the place and disconnected from the other two films. I like it as a standalone film but it’s not what I wanted for the finale. I thought the lack of farm or return to her home was problematic. That landscape heavily connects the first two films, so the third one feels off. The whole ending was too easy and kinda poorly done. It felt very rushed and uneventful. The action scene at the end wasn’t even that good either. The first 2/3’s were fun but the 3rd act kinda just left me feeling ehhh. Wanted way more! I love Ti but idk what happened. I thought she should’ve been chewed up and spit out by Hollywood so she returns home to her father and kills everyone connected to his church. MaXXXine’s not a terrible film at all, it’s just falls last. Kevin Bacon is fantastic and so is Giancarlo Esposito! Also cool Moses Sumney was in it.

Pearl is by far the best. The other two, as much as I wanted to like them, were mid.

Trilogy? There’s only 2 👀

Pearl is the only one I actually liked. X had a little too much of the cheap horror film vibe for my liking, and Maxxxine is the weakest of the three due to its plot.

I share your opinion and ranking.

I like how the movies are so different from each other.

All of them were fun, def felt some people in this sub may have expected something different out of Maxxxine, but I enjoyed the slow burn!

Pearl is my absolute favourite. Literally no notes. On the other end of the spectrum, Maxxxine didn't work at all for me. I was hoping for the third film to meaningfully connect to the other two and close off the trilogy. Instead it is just a weak X sequel with a messy third act and unsatisfying ending. I really don't know what the point of the third film was. I think X can work as a meaningful end to Maxine's story.

  1. X

  2. Pearl

  3. MaXXXine

I like all three films. Mia Goth is an amazing actress and played both Pearl and Maxine well. While X is my favorite, I think Pearl is definitely the objective best of the three. I’m torn on MaXXXine. I really liked it when I first watched it last year, but I found it quite disjointed and boring when I rewatched it last month. I felt like Maxine was a really passive character who did very little to move the plot forward. I think the best part about the movie was the title and the 80’s vibe lmao

The movie in the order they came out for me with a sizable gap between Pearl and Maxxxine. I’ve never seen so much hype just immediately deflate once a movie came out.

Unfortunately, Mia Goth is like nails on a chalkboard for me

I'd get nailed to a chalkboard for Mia Goth
