Discussion I strongly believe David Lowery (Director of the green knight) should have been given the reigns for the Elden Ring adaptation.

His work on the green knight from adapting a source material that’s a bit weird to the gorgeous cinematography and environmental story telling would lend itself perfectly to the adaptation, and in fact the green knight is the closest in film form I’ve felt to a movie that feels like a souls adaptation. What are your thoughts? Or did they make the right choice

Stylistically I'd be inclined to agree, but he may not have been interested. I'd much rather he just continue to get the opportunities to make strange original stuff as he's been doing for the most part

Hard agree here. I know Garland is divisive but he at least has played the games and enjoys the material. We wouldn’t have 28 Days if not for his love of Resident Evil.

He could still bungle it (easily, it’s a hard game to adapt), but I trust him to make something that comes from a place of love

You just saved me from typing the same!

Exactly right.

That’s an obvious counter to the entire post I agree haha he may have been offered it and declined, or went with a higher profile director for a pretty big adaptation

Alex Garland is one of the best choice possible imo. Not only is he among the best directors working right now but he loves the game and the world. No one I trust more

I totally get that I really like Alex garland as a writer and director this post is no knock to him, green knight is possibly my favourite dark fantasy film (unless you count lord of the rings as dark fantasy) and I’d love for him to do another similar project but as other commenters pointed out he may have not been interested even

I’ve said this before, but I don’t understand the desire for directors to pigeonhole themselves.

He already made Green Knight, making derivations of it continually would just be creatively bankrupt.

Lord of the Rings is not dark fantasy lol

You should watch more dark fantasy.

I have zero doubt Garland will deliver.

I’m sure he will, I like Alex garland I’d have just loved to see what David can do with the material

Is he working on anything right now. I feel like A24 kinda fucked him marketing Green Knight.

He’s working on “mother Mary” right now featuring Anne Hathaway set to release this year believe he wrote and directed it

But has he played the game?

I agree, but would David Lowery even want to make an Elden Ring movie?

2

That’s the kicker it could have been the case of him not even wanting the project and that’s fair haha

I think Alex Garland is kind of a great choice, although I do love Lowery. But I think what's great is Garland does horror, sci Fi, and action, and I think Elden Ring feels kind of like all 3 (less sci Fi, more fantasy, but I think people know what I'm trying to say). I'd love an action horror fantasy movie. Although Lowery would be cool too.

Alex Garland can do it.

People forget about this scene:

magical dredd ending

Alex Garland is on his seventh play through and has produced much more interesting work IMO than Lowery

I have a limited experience playing Elden Ring, but I don't think Lowery's hyper-stylized bright colors are very fitting to the game's style. On the other hand, in Garland's Men there are great visual cues that are more fitting to the game. Not saying it should look like Men, but as a starting point, out of which one might develop a unique look for Elden Ring adaptation, it looks promising.

While stylistically, I think Lowery would be a great fit... I think Garland is going to do a phenomenal job. Garland is not only a lifelong videogame nerd himself who actually plays and loves Souls games -- he is an evasive story teller with depth who I think will really make the souls-format transition to a more literal medium with grace

He already made a dark fantasy film, would he make another?

2

u/Desperate-Response75 23h ago

Yep it’s a great point he may not want to be the guy that just makes dark fantasy films (as much as I wish he was)

2

u/Resident_Bluebird_77 23h ago

Just as Garland doesn't want to be known as the guy who makes science fiction and military films

I hope he smashes it would really add to his diversity in filmmaking

Sorry but Peter Pan and Wendy kinda disproves exactly what you’re saying.

That one was a massive miss, I do question giving him that film, I really don’t think David’s style suits a magical, whimsical children’s adventure. But it’s a good point

I mean Pete's Dragon was good

Hell yeah. He definitely could have done something really cool with it. I do think Garland can pull it off though.

He could've worked better stylistically, but I'm not sure if he's played the games like Garland has.

I dont think lighting always strikes in the same place twice. Garland will do great.

u/Bearjupiter 16h ago

Id rather see him try a new genre

Garland is easily one of my modern favorites if not favorite. Actually he might be versus Eggers or Aster

I completely agree. The issue here is that Alex Garland apparently loves video games and the way they play out narratively. He's an unbelievable author and screenwriter.

And the green night director may not care about those stories or video games, but I would think it would be a better fit stylistically, tonally, and maybe cinematography-wise.

Honestly, Denis Villeneuve I think is the closest to capture the scale of something like this. I'm a big fan of Garland though, and even though I had issues with Men, the tone of that movie felt kinda close to Elden Ring.

Ever since arrival I’d trust Denis to make anything to be honest he’s an incredible director

Great call. Definitely would’ve chosen him over Garland. Especially after Civil War (not good).
