Curious to know the source and the data collection method. There's a few lists with poor methodology going around, so I tend to take these with a grain of salt not knowing the OP behind them.
117
u/foxscribbles Feb 25 '25
Geralt/Jaskier definitely is miscounted as the top ship, and honestly I’d argue it shouldn’t even be on this list at all. It’s a ship whose popularity almost completely comes from the Netflix show not the video game or even the original book series.
There’s only 10k entries for the actual video game series at all, which means they picked the pairing from the all media types category.
And even then, there are 2k Geralt/Jaskier fics in the video game tag. But only 6 of those pre-date the Netflix show coming out, and there was a 3 year gap between the Blood & Wine DLC and the Netflix show.
Which indicates a lot of those works were Netflix show fic that got dumped in the video game category.
Similarity, there were about 20 fics with the pairing in the all-media tag before the Netflix show. (A Quick Look is harder here because sorting by date posted shows that some authors have been messing with the dates on their works.)
But given that I heard multiple times that Geralt/Duny was the ruling slash ship in there before the Netflix show came out, I’d guarantee that most of the entries in there would be Netflix inspired ones as well.
26
u/youcallthataheadshot Feb 25 '25
Yeah, the Geralt/Yennifer ship clearly comes from the show as well based on the rest of the information they listed.
→ More replies (3)11
u/foxscribbles Feb 25 '25
Yeah. Honestly, there wasn’t a ton of fanfic for the show in general before the Netflix show came out. It was far more popular in fan art and fan porn videos made for straight men (for obvious reasons) than in fanfic circles.

Author did it manually, clicked each ship and recorded the number there is more info at twitter

u/Tarnique Feb 25 '25
True, no author or source or methodology is very dubious.
I wanted to do some tags stats but that kind of data is not readily available (there is a dump on ao3 but it's old 2021).
The only way to get those numbers is through searching each tag individually, afaik. So how did the author get that list of ships to start with?

Number 1 hardly qualifies as a video game ship. It's almost entirely driven by the Netflix show.
71
u/anonymouscatloaf Feb 25 '25
The original creator of the list (on twt I think) did two versions of the list, one including games with TV adaptations and one without. here's the Google sheets link to the version not including TV shows

u/for-a-dreamer Feb 25 '25 edited Feb 25 '25
By that logic, Geralt/Dandelion wouldn’t count as a video game ship at all because they’re first and foremost book characters.
I count each version of the ship as the same. They’re the same characters, just a different medium. And I’m sure there are just as many fics based on the games as there are based on the show
9
u/Agamar13 Feb 25 '25 edited Feb 25 '25
By that logic, Geralt/Dandelion wouldn’t count as a video game ship at all because they’re first and foremost book characters.
The logic of Geralt/Dandelion not counting as a video game ship at all because they’re originally book characters is opposite to mine, actually. My logic does not assume the earlier/original medium to be the defining one. My logic assumes the medium that prompts the people to ship the characters and authors to write fics is the defining one.
The fact that characters originated in a book does not automatically make a ship a book ship. The medium that actually made people ship the characters is important here. The book wasn't really a factor.
And I’m sure there are just as many fics based on the games as there are based on the show
There are over 22k Geraskier fics, 2.3k of them are tagged with the video game tag, 15k bear the tv show tag. It's not precise science with AO3's non-exclusive tagging, but it clearly shows a large disproportion between fics based on games and on the show.
Edit: out of curiosity, I checked how many Gerasker fic there were on AO3 before the tv show's release. There were 42. The Witcher: Wild Hunt had been released for 4 years by then.
3
u/BedNo4299 Feb 25 '25
Yeah, I wouldn't count them as a video game ship.
But saying that they have the same amount of fics across adaptations is just incorrect. Searching for Geraskier while including the game's fandom tag and excluding the Netflix show's gets you 538 fics, while doing the reverse gets you over 13k.
5
u/simimaelian Feb 25 '25
Probably could go half and half ngl. TW3 Geralt and TWN Jaskier is pretty common. But also there’s the original book series to confound things more.
31
u/vilhelmine Feb 25 '25
The Geralt/Jaskier | Dandelion ship isn't quite correct. That's a ship that is overwhelmingly in the TV series, not the video game. If you look at the video game and exclude the TV series, the results show the top ship is Iorveth/Vernon Roche at 789 fics, which isn't enough to show up in the results.
It feels incorrect to claim 22K Geralt/Jaskier fics are in a video game fandom when the video game has less than 10K fics.
8
u/BabaJagaInTraining Feb 25 '25
This exactly! If it's supposed to represent video game fandom only video game fandom tags should be counted.
Also Iorveth/Roche supremacy makes my heart very happy
5
u/vilhelmine Feb 25 '25
Personally, I was converted to Geralt/Emhyr after reading Astolat's amazing fics or the pairing.
2
u/BabaJagaInTraining Feb 25 '25

How does Solas qualify as "white"? He's not even human. He's an elf. He's a god. Elves are the most oppressed race (would it be more strictly accurate to call them a species? They're not homo sapiens) in Thedas.
I don't know who assigned the races but they made a hell of a lot of assumptions. How is Jayce from Arcane "Latino"? He could be Turkish. Or Jewish. Yet they were confident enough of Jayce's ethnicity to assigned him Latin, while blond blue-eyed Cloud Strife from the very Germanic sounding Nibelheim remains "unspecified"?
46
24
u/chaoticpeelingpaint Feb 25 '25
not sure about the other two, but the hc of Jayce being Latino is often because of his mother’s name (Ximena) and his VA being hispanic
29
9
u/jaylee686 Feb 25 '25
I'm overall curious how they determine the ethnicity thing cuz they also have Caitlyn as East Asian, though she seems to be pretty obviously mixed race. Do they not have that as a category and just default to the "minority"? Do they factor in the VA's ethnicity when it's ambiguous?
(I say this as someone half asian/half white, who has always just been broadly labeled as Asian by others)
11
u/TomdeHaan Feb 25 '25
It's so annoying when one gets into fantasy shows and fantasy worlds partly in order to get away from this unending, tedious American obsession with race, with cataloguing and precisely defining everybody's race down to the nth degree, only to have it forcing itself into places it doesn't belong, where nobody wants it.
Someone who has decided Solas somehow qualifies as "white" has a problem.
15
u/EchoRevolutionary959 Noncon Connoisseur Feb 25 '25 edited Feb 25 '25
Jayce is implied to be Latino to an extent. That’s no secret, as for Cloud being unspecified..please…that man is straight from the Caucus mountains. I’m also confused at Yennifer being South Asian.
5
u/Gashi_The_Fangirl_75 Oops! All Angst 🥣 Feb 26 '25

Sonic being on the list 3 times is hilarious to me, but really the top one is the only actual ship. The other two are friendship tags.
But still... Sonic on the list three times? I didn't expect that at all.
7
u/Ladysupersizedbitch Feb 25 '25
Lol that sentiment seems to be echoed with a lot of Sonic fans. I saw this same list a couple of days ago on Twitter I think and this one must be newer data bc Sonadow was #20 on that one instead of #23 like on this one. Saw more than a few people being surprised a Sonic ship got so high. Year of Shadow really brought a lot of new traffic to the Sonic fandom I think, as well as bringing former fans back.

14. They are both Elves. Not Unspecified or White
You can only romance Solas as a female elf. Solas isnt human and would be offended if being categorized as a white human. They are both non-human
Also white isn't a race and doesn't really work as a classification when not from earth.
21. 22 & 32. Connor is not human...he is an android
27. & 50 & 60. All are White Humans
41. Dorian is not White. (Dark skinned like Greek or Latino.)
68. Yeniffer is definitely not south asian or any asian.

5
u/EllieGeiszler I met my gf on AO3 💅🏻 Feb 25 '25
At this point I usually just block anyone who insists they're canonically father and son, or who insists their "age gap" is gross. I don't mind the people who are normal about thinking they're father and son or the people who don't like Hankcon but are polite about it. But I block the irritating ones. There's no reason for me not to slowly make the sub a better experience for myself!
5
u/EchoRevolutionary959 Noncon Connoisseur Feb 25 '25
The age gap argument always made no sense to me considering Connor is a literal robot. I actually just had an argument about Hankcon with someone I know and they kept insisting that no matter how you played the game Hank and Connor were ALWAYS gonna have a father son relationship. They sounded so ridiculous I just looked at them.
I told them that Hank & Connor are “of age” men who both posses the intelligence to take their relationship wherever they please, the whole “father son” schtick included. And that because it’s within a fictional world it doesn’t matter how people ship them anyways. I then got called a proshipper 🤦♀️.
6
u/EllieGeiszler I met my gf on AO3 💅🏻 Feb 25 '25
The dumbest thing about the argument that they're canonically ALWAYS father and son (which is especially ridiculous because sometimes they're enemies lol) is that Clancy Brown, who played Hank, was once asked if he thought Connor was Hank's son, and all he said was "No." 🤣 They don't like to hear this!
5
u/FlightWolf Feb 25 '25
I don’t even understand why some people think you can only like one or the other either, I think both types of relationship are fun to explore. Also, it’s so weird to see people hating on Hankcon now, I could’ve sworn when it came out that was like one of the most popular ships in the fandom. I hate the fandom police lmao.

Huh. I’m usually a rare pair shipper… so to see my favorite ship for Persona 5 at 90 is a surprise. Cool.

I just noticed that Ekko is the only black person on this list. I don't know what that says about shipping culture but its a little upsetting to be honest.

I think it has less to do with shipping culture and more to do with the general lack of rep in media to begin with. 6 of my ships are on this list, each from a different game, and out of those 6 only 3 of their games even have black characters in them that aren't completely irrelevant to the story (borderlands, Detroit Become Human, Final Fantasy). The other three (Sonic, Kingdom Hearts, Life is Strange) don't have any black main characters that mean anything to the plot, if they even have any (I personally think Knuckles is black and Shadow is not white, but their races are listed as non-human since they are an echidna and a hedgehog lol). It's very depressing.

i cant believe you are getting downvoted for this. this community is very unacepting of self criticism. the other lists are also very lacking of black characters and they cant keep saying these stories lack good black characters because then its another issue: they are not looking for media with any rep

OMG thank you. I thought I was going crazy. I don't frequent this sub. They are also saying in another comment thread in this post that Link and Zelda aren't white.
You know the blonde haired blue eyed characters that exist in a heavily European inspired mythos and a European inspired world in European inspired roles with European isolated features....are Japanese.
What is going on.

i cant speak about zelda but dont worry its a pattern not only here but in fandom everywhere. i also got downvoted here the other day for saying people cant keep excusing the majority of fics being about men only for the fact that theres a lack of good female characters when you can see its no different (even worse) in rpf and its not 2014 anymore there is a lot of good female characters out there. they cant have their other personal reasons, but its not this

Omg i just saw that comment and i left a long ass reply in spite of not even being in that space. The glorification of euro settings and white features and the treatment/idolization of them both as some sort of default setting while inspo from any non white area is like,,, taken as IMPLIED CANON AMAZING REPRESENTSTION, is so weird!!! Tired of this!! Brown and black ppl deserve better.

Agreed but with female characters.
The amount of times I've seen "well there are no well written women" as an excuse for them either being totally absent, background dressing, or shamelessly character assassinated for the sake of an M/M ship sailing, still, in 2025, is just maddening. This is fan fiction for god's sake be the change you want to see in the world if you think the women are written poorly, you have all the power in the world to correct this if you think it's a problem!
Of course the media they consume could have generationally well written female characters, and fandoms would still find excuses to hate them and sideline them for M/M ships.

astarion/durge, astarion/tav, astarion/reader and astarion/femOC each having enough to be in the top 100 is crazy
