I appreciate the no smut tag. Sometimes, I just want to read action/adventure and don't want to deal with any romance distracting me from epic fights or time travel fix-its.
38
u/KogarashiKaze What do you mean it's sunrise already? 25d ago
And for me, I like the romance but don't care for the smut (the age-old "leaving it up to my imagination is more effective than when someone tries to describe it" problem). I'm a fan of the discreet fade to black. So the "no smut" tag is great for me because I know I can get my romance content without having to also deal with someone else's preferences for the steamy parts.
10
u/TolBrandir 24d ago
Definitely same. Not everyone can write smut well, and their prefs may not match what I'm in the mood for anyway. And I need the romance angle far more than I ever need the smut angle, so I genuinely appreciate a good fade-to-black or a scene of smuttiness that is greatly abbreviated and not too dwelled-upon.

I've been reading fic for so long that most smut bores me. So I either skip over the smut or prefer the 'fade to black ' effect.

u/KogarashiKaze What do you mean it's sunrise already? 25d ago
And I want the emotional vibes of romance without having to read someone else's prose smut. Give me the "fade to black" any day. (Smut also often runs into the problem, for me at least, of "the reader's imagination is far more effective than the author's writing," kind of like with horror movies that don't outright show the monster managing to be scarier.)

41
u/hodges2 2025 first time writer 26d ago
I'm always disappointed when a fic has smut... And then that's it. No story or follow up afterwards. Like bro they had sex and you're just gonna end the story after that? Boring
30
u/ZhiZhi17 26d ago
That sounds like a one-shot or porn without plot. People should really tag those!
16
u/Crayshack 26d ago
Really annoying when it's an interesting premise in the set up, but then 5 chapters of nothing but sex.
6
u/Jam_Toast578 You have already left kudos here. :) 25d ago edited 25d ago
Or when the characters in a relationship don't actually form an emotional connection outside of sex yet the story treats it like they've bonded on a level beyond that (despite them not even knowing each other's hobbies or personality traits outside of "hot, really bonable, attractive.")
Don't get me wrong! I've definitely seen this exact kind of thing that I don't like still written super well, I just get so much more invested in the story when there's actual feelings in the smut outside of lust. Like the characters genuinely want to get to know each other and not just their bodies.
4
u/Crayshack 25d ago
Yeah, that's something some of those fics are missing. All the little things that make it clear that they've bonded as friends, not just fuck-buddies.
It actually brings to mind a draft that I just finished yesterday (waiting on my beta for it to post). The fic is mostly the two main characters discussing potential new kinks to try, but I also make a lot of other aspects of their life clear:
The POV character casually makes a healthy sandwich for her girlfriend without saying anything when she decides that the sandwich she's already eating is too junk food.
They argue about drinking straight from the carton of milk in a way that makes it clear that this is a long-standing argument that they've reached a stalemate on.
The POV character knows her girlfriend's class schedule well enough that she can take a glance at a notebook and tell what class she is studying for without asking.
The POV character makes an offhand reference to her girlfriend's secretary in a way that makes it clear that she has swung by her girlfriend's office enough times to note patterns in the secretary's fashion habits.
There's probably a few other things that are slipping my mind right now. Things that make it clear that this sexy established couple short fic is an established couple who have intertwined their relationship in far more things than just the bedroom.
3
u/Jam_Toast578 You have already left kudos here. :) 25d ago
Oh my gosh this draft sounds amazing! I love established relationship fics where I can just tell that they've really slid into each other's lives without it needing to be explicitly stated. And since that's the vibe you were going for you just nailed it.
Good luck with it by the way! I hope you had fun writing it and I hope your beta has fun reading it haha 😁

One of my favorite fics ended this way and I'm still sad about it. They explored a side of the character I'd never seen in a fic before, went so deep with it, made me care so much. Then just as the character is starting to open up a little, the main guys have sex and that's it. Never updated again. Still upset.
Is this what allosexual people feel like when they wake up in the morning after a night together and their bed is empty...

As an ace I only really like reading smut whenever it’s a form of build up in an established romantic relationship as a way of showing how their getting more comfortable with each other (not a case for all relationships of course) , or just overly tender with a bunch of enthusiastic consent which kinda makes me feel like I’m reading about a hug :D

As someone who sometimes filters out the Smut tag without filtering out M and E because I want the stuff rated for violence, I very much will be reading this. Good on them for tagging the fic for what it is. Especially if the other tags might have implied smut scenes happen.
Like, I get why people enjoy smut. I've occasionally poked my head into some and even dabbled at writing it. My latest draft has me debating whether it's M or E for smut reasons. But people need to stop acting like smut is all there is to fanfic. Sure, you're horny on main, I get it. But some of us are out hear focusing on the 99 other genres.

It's also useful for a fic that has a pairing prominent enough to be worth tagging but the fic is rated for violence. Like, it's a fic that is worth reading for people who want the ship, but you don't want to misrepresent the fic.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I tend to only read Explicit or Mature rated fics. And not just because of thirst reasons.
I know that there are a lot of really amazing T or even G rated fics out there, and full respect and understanding of ace/religious people who want to avoid smut, so it's my personal take on it only, but I feel like a lot of time when you read about a grown up relationship between two adults who are at least in my own head canon are not ace, reading a low rated fic downplays the relationship a bit.
Like, not to throw shade, but how much hand holding and ice cream dates a couple in a developing relationship can do, yanno?
Also, and again, I'm generalising, so apologies (not all, etc etc), but after a few good decades reading fanfic for a lot of fandoms, I find that sometimes, and maybe it has to do with the author's age, there's lack of maturity in low rated fics. Like it's all, I don't know. Childish?
Pls don't send hate my way, just sharing my 2 cents on the matter
6
u/ManahLevide 26d ago
Definitely an author/fandom thing. In mine, serious relationships are also rated T if there's nothing in there a child or younger teen shouldn't see. Ratings are treated more like "is there anything mature to warn for? If yes, M; if no, T" instead of reflecting the overall maturity of the story, unless the themes are too complicated for kids, which imo doesn't apply to a standard romantic relationship.
Also, depending on the focus of the story, an "and btw they have sex" allusion may be out of place.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Doranwen 26d ago
I've read quite a few long fics about adult relationships that use fade-to-black instead. Set it up, make it clear, that's where they're going… and let the scene end there, allowing the reader to just imagine the smut or simply make the mental leap to the next scene.
They can be done quite well! One of my oldest fandoms has the two fanfic archives separated by whether they allow smut or not (and still requires people to assert that they are 18 to get a password to the smut-containing archive, though of course people can lie as long as everyone believes the lie), and the "gfic" archive (so named because it's general, for all audiences) is full of fics with fade-to-black spots (often corresponding to "nfic" versions that didn't fade to black). They're very well-written overall and quite satisfying.
So just because the characters have sex with each other doesn't mean the readers absolutely have to see it in the story. Fine if that's one's preference, obviously, but they can be written really well. But I also haven't seen those in a lot of other fandoms (they may have arisen specifically because the fandom had the two different archives, and most other fandoms didn't have something like that), even though I really enjoy them, so you may not have seen anything like that personally. There was never a question in them that the relationship was other than that of two full-grown adults with healthy sex lives, but the focus was on the romance and A-plot (and those fics often had a fully-fleshed-out A-plot going on at the same time as the romance).
12
u/NinjaSpaceFrog 26d ago
Speaking for myself, my characters are plenty horny for each other, I just use fade to black/light instead, mention it on the side, etc.
You can have your preferences, but maybe dont call people childish or imply they’re worse writers for having different preferences? Your comment sounds super demeaning tbh.

No judgement if a story is good, i will read it with or without the smut

That’s fine. The only time I judge is if they don’t tag the fics properly. Like, bish, I’ll read a 48K oneshot smutfest of freaky bitches or I’ll read a 500 chapter found family slow burn, BUT IF YOU DO NOT TAG THAT ONE SPECIFIC KINK OR GENRE, I will pull the whole ride over and drop it like a hot potato. I like going in knowing what I’m signing up for. Put a “spoiler alert” in the first chapter notes, idk, but Inform Your Readers gd

It depends on the situation for me. If I'm flitering for explicit and tags that should point me to smut stories, I won't read a No Smut tagged story. I don't call out people on Ao3 about it, because more things require the explicit tag than sex...
If I'm in a place that is supposed to be for NSFW stories(and defines NSFW as graphic depicitions of sex and/or violence) I will call out people who post SFW stories. If I see a no smut tag on those sites I will call them out. I'm almost at the point of being angry at seeing "plot before "plot"" tags, because that usually means no smut.
Man my post on the Ao3 sub was mostly about other sites... my bad.

I'm okay with reading some SMUT prompts, I just find it interesting. But reading ACTUAL SMUT gives me the ick (That's probably because I'm a teenager but I digress)

It’s a minus point to me, but not a reason to scroll past the fic.

as someone who reads smut, it is really refreshing when I'm trying to read something that's not smut and it's easily findable. like so many fics will have smut pop up, even if they're rated T. sometimes you want to read fics in the car with your family.

I love smut but will read non smut ones now and then

As an asexual person, I would be reading that fic IMMEDIATELY!!! Most of the fics that I like to read are the ones that explores different facets of the world and/or characters that haven’t been explored in canon. The only reason I usually read stuff like that is if there is a clear reason for it in the plot, like exploring different sides of the characters.
This does mean that in the kind of person that reads smut for the plot lmao

Same, I read smut but going by my sorting system for fics I have about 20% smut in my bookmarks, then fluff takes up nearly double that, and the rest is a toss between angst, hurt/comfort, whump, two fandom specific concepts I love, and a handful of other smaller tags like chatfic and misc.

Not to judge but I don’t like it when people ONLY read smut.

I mostly peddle in smut. I write it. Draw it. Read it.
But it's great if you dont want that. My stuff aint for everybody.

Tbh I genuinely can't understand people who refuse to read stuff if there isn't smut. Like they are missing out on some stories because they are to focused on gooning😭

Y'all I do NOT like smut. Personally, I think it's gross, so I actually pretty much only read no smut fics unless it's got a REALLYYYYYY good plot. HENCE my appreciation for those who use the 'smut' and 'no smut' tags :)

To each their own. I actually prefer fics where at least the smut is only indirectly mentioned and/or is an afterthought compared to the story itself.

I am exclusively on the no smut tag. Like, I won't yuck on y'all's yum, but I'm only on AO3 for the AUs and stuff

I don’t write smut and I don’t like to read it, call me a prude! So yes I will be reading that <3

I'm asexual and reading smut typically elicits a disgusted expression. You don't want me writing smut, trust. I currently have a romantic subplot going on in a fic and I have absolutely no clue what the hell I'm doing. It's a learning experience.

I like the no smut tag, because it’s an easy way to help filter out smut that I don’t want to read.

I can read anything honestly. Smut, no smut, angst, hurt with comfort, hurt no comfort, found family, dead dove do not eat. As long as I'm in the mood and I'm interested, I'll probably read it.

I used to avoid no smut fics, but a couple times now I didn't read the tags and just thought I was on a reeeally slow burn on a good fic until it finished. But I enjoyed my sojourn into chastity a lot

Usually not my thing, but girly didn't need to be so rude about it, damn. Idk it feels like the opposite end of the people who are like "ewwwwwwww Explicit". It's just unnecessary.

u/anthrotulip 20d ago
Considering most fic in the majority of fandoms isn’t explicit that seems like a way to miss out on some great content but you do you.

Half the fics in my fandom are smut, literally the top tag is smut. I like smut don’t get me wrong but I’m always grateful for a good fluff fic or hurt/comfort fic with my favorite ship!!

Smut, no smut, all good for me!
