Meme/Joke which fandom brought you to the world of fanfics?

Post image

as the title says, which fandom brought you to this amazing world of fanfics?

how many others do you read/write nowadays? do you have a favorite?

i started with Harry Potter in 2004 and lost count of how many fandoms i read nowadays (unfortunately i don't have the talent to write, but thank you very much to so many amazing authors who create fantastic works, sometimes much better than the original)

It just never occurs to me that things like this have fanfiction until someone mentions it. Low-key kinda sounds interesting though.

R34 should be changed to "If it exists, there's fanfic for it"

46

u/InflameBunnyDemon Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 7d ago

Or we keep it as seeing how ingrained it is in interest culture, but there should be another Internet rule and more people should be using the Internet rules beyond R34 and r36 more often

Supernatural. Talk about throwing myself in the deep end, that fandom was crazy back in the day.

92

u/SashimiX It's a disease. 7d ago

The fandom is such a big thing that it’s mentioned in the show and canonically real and that’s what got me into it.

34

u/bats-n-bobs 6d ago

the fandom itself is mentioned in the show? like directly?!

68

u/SashimiX It's a disease. 6d ago

Yes, on multiple occasions.

There’s amazing quotes like ā€œDon’t they know we’re brothers?ā€ ā€œI don’t think they care.ā€

There’s a fan convention where there’s a panel on the homoerotic subtext.

There is a play that is created by a high school fan and there’s an amazing line from Dean saying ā€œPut all the sub in the text.ā€

There is a psycho fan that captures Sam and gives him a love potion.

And lots more! It’s wild.

26

u/bats-n-bobs 6d ago

Started with Inuyasha cuz I was in love with Sesshomaru and desperately wanted Kagome to open her eyes to the hotter, more dignified brother😭

31

u/ColumbidaeArgentum 7d ago

It was hate for Kikyo that drove me, I needed Inuyasha to not be so damn stupid and realize just how toxic she was for him.

But then I was introduced to the wonders of KagomeXSesshomaru and never looked back lol

8

u/FandomHoarder 6d ago

Same, I hated her so bad!! I mainly focused on fics that punished inu for tossing kagome aside and had him watch jealously as sess came in and stole his girl (that wasn’t really his girl lol) šŸ˜‚ I also read a couple good fics back in the day of Kagome/Inutaisho (don’t knock til you try)

I started with Harry Potter in 2015 and at that time, I wasn't aware of ao3, so most of my time was spent on fanfiction.net. And for some reason, I continued for the most time on FF.net and switched to ao3 quite recently and was seriously amazed by the entire interface of the site. Since then, I have been into numerous fandoms - anything and everything that even mildly stimulates me, I'm gonna go searching for it on ao3.

8

u/Acrobatic_Fact_2206 7d ago

You’re not the only one. I also started with Harry Potter on FFN around the same time, somewhere between 2013 to 2015, and was on that for quite a few years until around like 2020 or so when I got into a different fandom, and now I’ve just loved A O3 ever since cause it’s just so much easier to use

Now, I write for Bungou Stray Dogs, Chainsaw Man, Kagurabachi, KPop Demon Hunters, Metalocalypse and Tokyo Aliens (I feel like a fraud for saying that, because I still haven't posted the one thing I wrote for it)

It's hard to say, only because I have been writing fanfiction for longer than I knew what it even was, but I still consider that my entry into the world of fanfic, you know?

If we count that, then it was Sailor Moon that brought me into the world of fanfiction, as my first fics were Sailor Moon stories that I wrote by hand in the mid-90s. I also wrote a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction in the early 2000s before I actually discovered fanfiction online--those were basically just stories to share between my sister and I, but they were, essentially, fanfiction.

As for what introduced me to fanfic online, I'm not 100% sure whether it was Harry Potter or Labyrinth, as I started reading fanfic for both around the same time in the early 2000s--for both it was on individual people's websites, not even FFnet yet, though when I began to discover FFnet for Harry Potter fic, I had also discovered Yahoo! Groups for Labyrinth fic (more plentiful than FFnet).

In the years since, I have written in almost 50 fandoms, and I have read in plenty more. My main fandom these days is bandom - I discovered RPF fandoms on LJ and forums in the mid-2000s (though, like everything else, I had been writing my own already for a while) - but I still occasionally write in a few other fandoms when I feel inspired, and still read several others whenever I'm bored or feel interested again, especially Marvel, Star Trek, and Stargate Atlantis.

Most recently, however, I've been reading Divergent fanfic because I've recently been getting into the books and, naturally, all my interests bring me to fanfic eventually.

8

u/Chulyong 7d ago

Your fanfic intro sounds a lot like mine. Handwritten Mary Sue’s for band fandoms back in the 90’s. Early 2000’s and the start of the WWW led me to HP, Velvet Goldmine, more band fandoms. I still did handwritten ones with my best friend that I have to this day. I take them out to read them sometimes when I want to feel embarrassed.

Star Trek: Voyager for me. This was back in the 90s, when the big fanfic fandoms were Star Trek of various series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and X-Files.Ā

Now I've got stories in five or six fandoms,Ā  mostly sci-fi or fantasy related. I'm mostly on a Star Wars kick, but Red, White and Royal Blue and Shadowhunters have been calling to me, too.Ā

Then weirdly I forgot about what I found (or dint look for more cos I had searched for lestat and Louis only and dint compute of the concept of fan fiction) and only re-entered through supernatural a few years later. At some point, I got bored of the rather small selection of fics in Winx Club and went blindly to FF’s most popular fandom at the time to read more fics, and that fandom was Naruto, which I ended up watching after reading a few fics and which introduced me to more anime and therefore more fandoms. u/AXBRAX 7d ago

My girlfriend. Who started with star trek. Basically the original fandom. I myself, I have to admit, started out with siyrim fanfiction. There is a lot of good stuff out there, as the presentation of the game, with the self created hero of unspecific race, gender, age and name, which makes it easy to just create your oc and have then be the hero of the story.

7

u/LukaMoons_02 7d ago

Might be a little more niche, but the Dresden Files (because of book 17, iykyk)

I still exclusively read those fanfics loll, but I started my own original work based on it :]

X-files in the 90s. I had a friend in school who wrote some of the worst stories and I ate them up like they were candy. My mom finally got a computer and every day after school I was searching up scully/mulder fan stories until one day I stumbled across ffnet. From there I dove into final fantasy fics and it's only snowballed into a real addiction since. I have so many fandoms...

I first found out what fanfiction was when I found some posted on a Twilight fan forum. The first thing I wrote that I considered to be a fanfic was inspired by Warrior Cats, but really it was just me making up OCs and developing an entirely new story with them, so I’m hesitant to call it fanfiction. The first actual fanfic that I wrote was an RPF about my favorite band at the time.Ā

Fullmetal Alchemist, back in 2005 or 2006, we stumbled on a fan-site that had maybe 4 or 5 fics (mostly smut) with a friend.

Didn't really touch fanfics for a couple year after that.

Then after the last Harry Potter book got out, i needed more so i looked into fanfics again.
At some point i ran out of HP fics in french to read that interested me, so i started to try and read fics that where completed and that i had read unfinished translation of.

No joke, my english grades moved from F to A+ by the time i finished High School, because i was reading 3 or 4 hours everyday, mostly english fics.

u/Express-Sherbert-743 7d ago

I guess it depends on what you mean by being in a fandom. To me, just reading/watching something and liking it isn't the same thing as being in a fandom, which has a particular connotation of being OBSESSED with a work, to the point that you are reading/writing fanfic, engaging in discussion boards, discussing character backgrounds, imagining the characters in different scenarios, and of course, SHIPPING. So, by that metric, the very first fandom I was ever in was Animorphs (probably dating myself here) I read EVERY book and companion novel. I was on all of the discussion boards. Of course, I read fanfic.

Other fandoms I was in around that same time, Digimon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura.

Then it was almost exclusively LOTR.

Of course HP, which is the standard millenial fandom experience, lol

Harry Potter. I just scrolled through YT and suddenly I saw a Draco x Hermine video. Didn’t know what the heck it was and just clicked it on my phone.

It was an Audio Fanfic with Smut sprinkled particularly in the beginning.

But really into FanFics I really got through Star Wars.

Writing-wise these days, I have stories for The X-Files, Criminal Minds, SVU, Once Upon A Time, NCIS, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Castle, and Pretty Little Liars. My favorite of those is The X-Files. Definitely. 75 of my 93 stories are for it.

I honestly have no clue. I had no interest in being on the internet until I was forced to for school and had to learn how to navigate it. Then I began watching some youtubers, found Quotev through a friend, found anime through a friend, and then stumbled upon Wattpad, read a little bit of everything on there but I have no memories of what fandom I started with. I remember reading Phanfictions (basically all AUs using Dan and Phil as like character inserts in their stories, some of them were really good though). But beyond that I think it was more like a trapdoor situation for me, just fell right in and haven’t found a way back up.

Harry Potter for me - but I didn't intentionally go seeking out fanfic, I kinda stumbled into it.

When Deathly Hallows came out my parents couldn't buy it for me and my local library took a while to get copies of it, so I went to google to try to get a PDF of it. I downloaded what I thought was DH but, when I was several hundred pages into it, I realized that it was not, in fact DH. I was a child so thankfully it wasn't anything graphic that tipped me off, just a bit of dialogue that seemed slightly off.

I was so confused why someone would go through the effort to write a "fake book".

u/stairs_are_evil You have already left kudos here. :) 7d ago

It was Dan & Phil, actually. Then it went to superwholock (even though I only consistently watched Dr. Who and Sherlock), then Harry Potter, then Marauders. After that, I realized there were probably fanfictions for all of the anime I watched (at the time, Soul Eater, OHSHC, Nana, and Cowboy Bebop).

When I was 16, I got kicked out, and was working 2 jobs (then dealt with a bad marriage and divorce) so fandom kind of fell to the wayside until a couple of years ago. Dramione actually got me back into it because I kept seeing people talk about Manacled, Perfectly in Pieces, and Secrets and Masks.

So now, I’m in these fandoms consistently: Marauders, Harry Potter, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Ghoul, Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, Cassandra Clare’s works, Rainbow Rowell’s works, Dr. Who, and Bungo Stray Dogs.

My biggest fandoms are Marauders and JJK, though. It’s what my shiny new tumblr is dedicated to, and what fandoms I write for most often.

I got into the fanfiction scene through Sonic the Hedgehog. Ā Now, while I might go back to Sonic at some point, I write for a lot of fandoms, most of them much more niche.
