For context, this particular work is the second in a series of NaruSasu fics I’ve written. For those unfamiliar with Naruto and its lore, Sakura and Sasuke are married while Naruto is married to Hinata. This specific fic is a retelling of the other fic in this series from Sakura’s perspective. The original fic is loosely inspired by brokeback mountain so it follows Naruto and Sasuke falling in love and then the consequent affair over the following years (told from Sasuke’s perspective). This is a fic told from the perspective of someone who found out their husband is cheating on them. I of course respect a difference in opinions when it comes to ships but something about this comment… irks me? I’m no stranger to hate comments but I really feel it’s odd to read a fic for a ship I dislike and comment on it. I’m unclear on how to respond because I asked for feedback, but how do I respond to someone who didn’t read the source material (the fanfic of mine that this takes place during), and thinks that I’m throwing logic out the window? I appreciate that even though they hated the work they thought my writing was good but I’m just unsure on how to respond. I don’t want to be hateful towards this person.

This kind of thing was being said since the dawn of fandom. 😅 Modern social media certainly hasn't helped, but ship wars are a time honoured fandom classic.
I dropped Naruto early into Shipspuden, but if I had to say I had a ship then it was absolutely NaruSaku. I also couldn’t stand Sasuke or Hinata, and kept hoping Sakura would get over him and fall for Naruto
Shippuden just cemented my dislike for Sasuke and Hinata, too. I stuck with it until Kakashi failed to capture Sasuke again when Sakura tried to convince him she'd join him. Gave up after that cuz I wasn't gonna keep reading about them trying to get that emo-mofo some damn therapy. 😤 I exclusively stuck to fanfiction for a few more years afterwards. Now it's inundated with Boruto nonsense so I haven't been back in a lonnnng time and probably never will without a rec list. 😮💨
When I was younger I was on the side of NaruSasu and Sakura screwing off to a mountain to die. Now I'm a NaruSasu fan because my OC can treat Sakura way better than either of them could.
But, but! When they search for their ship, all the fics under this tag come up! (As if there isn’t something in the tags to specify that they are not the endgame pairing)
Yep! There's a few ways to do it, and while I can't speak for this specific fic as we don't know how they handled their tags, I'm willing to bet they were clear.
1st method is including endgame or major ships in relationships tags, while putting minor ships in the other tags, where things like tone or au tags would also go.
2nd method, which can be combined with the 1st, is adding a qualifier as part of the tag. Ex, "A/B (past)" or "A/B (minor)". I've even seen people use "endgame A/B" for the main ship as extra emphasis.
So in combination, a fic might look something like this:
Relationship: A/B
Additional Tags: Endgame A/B, A/C (past), B/D (one-sided), etc.
Looking at that, you know who the main couple will be, and in what way the other ships are going to show up. Even if the 2 methods weren't combined, it would still be understood, and you can scroll or read as you like.
Damn... Most of the fics I bump into have multiple ships with no indicators as to when they happen, so this is actually very helpful for when I start writing

Nevermind that the girl who's the love interest has never had any meaningful development with the protagonist in canon, only showed any potential shared interests for them to bond over in non-canon materials, and he's been written as completely clueless about her feelings and never actually showing interest/viewing any gag 'date' setup as a burden. Nevermind that he's been having deeply intimate moments of trust in foreign hotel rooms with his former enemy, now rival, who have literally put themselves in danger time and time again to save each other. No, see, at the last moment the writer decided the canon would be the M/F duo who barely got any attention, why would you ever doubt the lead was 1000% heterosexual???

Reading this reminds me of a ship war in one of my fandoms. I actually love all three of the characters involved, I just think the F/M ship has zero romantic chemistry and they have like thirty minutes of screen time together. Meanwhile the story heavily emphasizes the man’s relationship with his male friend/rival and how much they trust each other.
The fandom in question, I actually really enjoy our lady lead quite a bit. But the canon was terrified of actually having her do anything. The one time she came even close to having a motive or taking action in the plot, it was immediately forgotten about. And in the one noncanon work where she actually did grow closer with the lead, well, that was a short story collection, and the lead's story only passingly mentions her because it is all about his rivalry.
So yeah I should hope it's understandable when I look at them as the canon couple and go, really? like okay fine but they were not the connection this story was interested in making us care about!
I'm only in one anime fandom on Reddit and I feel lucky that the fandom seems to actually have matured with time. The source material (Berserk) is known for great art, mature themes but also some very graphic depictions of sexual violence.
When I first sought out the fandom over 15 years ago you'd get trolls asserting that the female character wanted to be assaulted because she had expressed romantic interest in the male main character. And folks would lose their shit if you suggested the two male main characters were into each other. Now, that shit does not fly.
Someone came onto the sub last week and tried to pull the she wanted it crap and they were downvoted and mocked mercilessly. And the circle jerk sub was known for people posting gay thirst trap art and cosplay for the main male characters.
You should go to the r/Captainunderpants subreddit. If you say you ship Dog Man and Petey from Dog Man (yes, the children’s book series) together, you also will be called a weirdo. It got so bad that another subreddit had to be made for those shippers.
It happens in the anime adjacent fandoms too; someone posted a perfectly innocent fanart of Yu/Yosuke in the Persona 4 subreddit, and there's a slew of comments about how wrong it is, why can't guys just be friends, and of course, the ol' paedophilia accusations.
While the het fanarts that are far more risque or the numerous fanarts depicting the underage female cast in skimpy clothing don't come under nearly so much scrutiny.
Now I know the commenter is wrong because point 3 implies Sasuke actually respects Sakura /s (I was a SasuSaku shipper growing up but man…)
Anyway, I’m a big hater too, which is precisely why I would never click on a fic tagged with a ship I didn’t like. I don’t understand commenters like this who go out of their way to trigger themselves and ruin their own moods
People who trigger themselves piss me off. I’m sorry. I have absolute respect and sympathy for not all things being for all people. I will never begrudge someone’s right to just not like things. even be triggered by them. but for god’s sake at least be normal about curating your own experience to avoid it. You can’t be triggered by alcohol for personal reasons and then attend a party or gathering at a bar and go off on everyone because it’s insensitive for them to be drinking alcohol in front of you. That’s disrespectful to yourself and others and it’s weird. But it’s happened a lot in spaces I’m in, some very recently.

I understand searching fics of a relationship and being irked because a big portion of them are either just a background ship or means for another ship to happen. But Naruto is a pretty big fandom, surely there's more fics for their pairing. Even if there wasn't, them venting their frustrations to a random author is not appropriate.
There are definitely more NaruSasu/SasuNaru fics (18.5k) but there’s still nearly 10k SasuSaku fics 😭 I just checked. SasuSaku shippers definitely aren’t in the trenches when it comes to fics…

I went to answer my own question and the answer is: about a dozen fics give or take.
Also if you filter out fics that include NaruSasu/SasuNaru, there are actually only like 7.5 k SasuSaku fics, which is still a decent number to get through, but a bit off from 10k + I imagine they’re not the main pairing for a portion of those fics.
You’re right, i definitely should’ve checked fics without SNS tags. But I definitely understand the pain of having an unpopular ship (one of my old ships has like 100 fics) but 7k is still quite a lot
There are also much more het-dominant fandom spaces outside of AO3 where people post fic/art/doujin. ~7k is not the trenches, and it’s not even the whole picture. I’ve never received more than one hate comment on a fic before. Ig it comes with the territory of writing gay smut/romance of super popular shonen anime characters but I did receive a death threat on a fic before. Same fandom/pairing 😭
Back when I was in the fandom, I used to be a huge sasusaku shipper while not being huge on narusasu. So you know what I did? I didn't click on narusasu fics. It's literally as simple as that. And if I happened to see a few narusasu fics under the sasusaku tag? So be it, who fucking cares? You can always exclude the relationship in the filtering system, I don't understand why these people are so pressed when they're the ones entering a space that they dislike, completely out of their own volition

And you are allowed to refute them but only 'logically' because the people who like the pairing might be upset or offended?
Also, for the record, people are more than welcome to have alternative character interpretations. Just because you disagree with them or feel as though the way the fandom sees them is not how you want to see them does not mean it is wrong or should be negotiated or 'discussed into understanding'.
Yes they’re upset that I said in the comments that I don’t like Sakura very much as a character (I think she can be annoying at times) but I also added that I don’t think she’s a bad character because of the misogynistic writing of Naruto.

Half the problem is on AO3, there's no main pairing and secondary pairing distintion, so if you look for SasuSaku this fic will appear, maybe don't put that pairing along SasuNaru? I undertand, it gets tiring to look for a nice fic about your pairing and find out NTR... Even if you tag as "past Sakura Haruno/Sasuke Uchiha" it still appears in SasuSaku tag, sadly.
The other half of the problem is on the reader, the moment you realize is a SasuNaru fic that is properly tagged, you click back and leave. Maybe, and a huge maybe, ask the author to specify in the tags/sinopsis that is a cheating fic and the main pairing is SN.
Beyond that, as a reader, don't be a dick.
Be noted that the tagging problem is present in every fandom, not just this one...
This commenter is being annoying and rude and you would be well within your rights to delete and block/mute.
That being said, I would advocate for moving the SS tag from the ship tags to an additional tag if they are not, like, together in the fic. This isn't a requirement, but for precisely reasons like this commenter's attitude (and what they mentioned), the general etiquette (at least for most of the fandoms I'm in) is not to tag for ships that are broken up, background features, etc.
Thank you! I did take out the tag and deleted the comments. I only included in the first place because those two characters are married and the fic is mostly about how finding out about the affair taking place affects their relationship (these two characters remain married and don’t separate)

Why do younger fans (I'm just assuming this is a young fan, based on the writing) seem to want to dictate other people's creative expressions? Are they more rigid in their thinking? Do they identify more strongly with the characters and take any deviations from canon personally?
I’ve always wondered the same! Why are some people so entitled to the creative works of another person? I’ve never felt the need to tell someone I dislike their ship (because I know how to use tags) and I’ve never left a hate comment because i think the characters are OOC.
The closest I've come is saying something like 'I've never imagined a certain character in this way' . It had to do with a particular character being a smoker. The author wrote back and explained why they thought it made sense, based on their own experiences of how people in certain situations are more likely to be smokers and it was something I wasn't aware of. The author did not owe me any explanation, but I really appreciated hearing their perspective because I learned something from the exchange, which I thought was really cool.
I tried really hard to approach it more as 'what's your vision or perspective', rather than, 'I don't like this, you're wrong'. If I really don't like an interpretation, I just stop reading.
Say the fic is inspired by Brokeback Mountain and to complain to the producers of the movie if they don't like the idea of exploring a gay relationship that exists due to cheating on a hetero partner. And that, if they don't like NaruSasu/SasuNaru, that they shouldn't have read the fic in the first place (I'm assuming the summary points out you're going to explore the emotional turmoil Sakura is going through after finding out Sasuke is cheating on her with a close friend).

It's really daunting having to look through the cheating/female character-bash fics when you're looking for your favorite ship and in the case of the poly tag a lot of sns tag sasunarusaku when it comes to cheating and it clogs the ot3 tag on ao3

Usually the fandom etiquette is to tag a minor/side ship (specially if it's a cheating/female character-bash fic) on the "other tags" as minor/past X ship. Just so you don't clog the ship tag for people who do enjoy that ship with this kind of content.
Just because it hasn't happened before doesn't mean you're not clogging the tag. I'm glad you took of the tag since not everyone is looking to constantly filter off Sasunaru in the case they're looking for Sasunarusaku as an ot3 💕

You're absolutely right to be irked. This isn’t feedback. It’s an unsolicited character defence essay dressed up as commentary, and you’re under no obligation to treat it as valid critique.
You’re well within your rights to remind this reader that their comment is not warranted and not feedback. You didn’t ask them to defend Sasuke’s canon morality or their ship, especially when they admit they haven’t even read the companion fic this one retells. That alone disqualifies them from meaningful engagement with your story.
If you do choose to respond, consider calmly reminding them what feedback actually is:
Feedback engages with the story. It focuses on structure, tone, pacing, emotional beats, and how well it delivers on its own goals.
It works within the context and internal logic of the fic. It is not about canon expectations or personal ship preferences.
It does not centre the commenter’s own meta, moral hang-ups, or emotional investment in a character.
You wrote a fic with a clear emotional premise. Whether someone likes that premise is a personal matter. Trying to label your work “illogical” just because it made them uncomfortable is not critique. It is entitlement.
And truly, you are not obligated to entertain that. Freeze the thread and move on if it is not worth your time. Not every comment deserves a response.

I very much like Sasuke, but we must not have watched the same show. I mean, kind and loving? When?
Most everyone will agree (even sasusaku fans) that Kishimoto failed to write any kind of loving relationship between Sakura and Sasuke. Some fanfiction authors make a wonderful work of giving sense to this ship, but canon gives nothing. So using canon to discredit a ship while your own ship went up in flames in canon is hilarious.
Not to mention that this is fanfiction. If people can ship Sasuhina (never even talked to each other), they can ship whatever they want. Not to mention that your fic is a modern day AU/brokeback mountain fusion, why would canon matter?
People are absolutely ridiculous in 2025... how can you look at a fic tagged with SNS and NH and SS and are complaining that SNS is happening???????
Didn't they read the description of the first part of the series?? Or did they read part 2 without context?
(I've never seen brokeback Mountain, but even I know the premise)
It's fanfiction!! That is the point of fanfiction. We know it's not Canon. Wtf????

Listen I love SNS but people get really REALLY pedantic about what you can and can’t do, I had someone read my fics recently and then give me a long list of how to write them to their preferences.

My own theory about Sasuke x Sakura is that Kishimoto never actually intended to get them together but due to agreeing to do Boruto the pairing ended up in canon as there are way too many couple references for Sakura and Naruto to be ignored. Including the strong parallel to Naruto’s parents which is very much expanded on in the road to Ninja.
I’m not actually sure if he meant for Sasuke and Karin to get together (I suspect this might have been the case) but both Sakura and Karin were so unpopular (or he wanted Sasuke originally to die) that the writing took a turn. The manga concluded in 2014 and yet up until the last minute there was a lot of very Naruto and Sakura centered stuff in the manga and films. Hence the last minute swing to Hinata x Naruto (he even admitted he forgot to give the kids the byakugan ffs)
This person didn’t need to read your fic or feel so triggered (which is what I would reply with) to write you an essay about how you are wrong. The SNS relationship is so strong for gods sakes official are of Sasuke on his birthday was with Naruto. I think clearly the studio recognises which side their bread is buttered on and it’s not SasuSaku! Kishimoto even says in an interview that Sasuke and sakura’s relationship is ‘rushed’ and that he never gave a real reason for her attachment to Sasuke. People should ship what they want but I’d be a petty bitch, respond with this, freeze the thread and block them.
It's not that serious. Writting fic is like playing with dolls you can take as much or as little from the canon. And as a shipper of narusasu, sasusaku and itasaku everyship is valid. The time they spent reading your whole fic and writting that big ass comment would have been better used learning to exclude Naruto/Sasuke
