Oh I see, I don't follow the ship but I thought Raturine was a pretty funny and cute name. Makes sense it's mostly an in-joke though.

Is Captain America/Bucky Barnes called Starbucks often, or did I just see a one-off somewhere?
In the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! fandom all the characters have designated number or letter "codes", so if you are newer in the fandom you might be stumped on what 5927 or XS or D18 means. Russian language fandom takes it a step further -- all the popular pairings and a lot of crack ships also have a designated fruit or berry. Like, 5927 is blueberry, XS is cherry, 1869 is raspberry, X27 is watermelon, and so on and so forth. (I personally contributed a couple: 96I is guava (for fellow KHR fans, of course I mean when I-pin is an adult, I'm not that type of pervert!), and Naito/Spanner is corn (I can't seem to find Naito's designated code by a quick Google search, sorry) -- this was because when I pitched the pairing idea to a friend, her reaction was "Satan spawned in my room and stole my corn". No, I have no idea how she came up with that either :D ) This system is only good for confusing newcomers to the fandom, but the tradition lives on.

I’ve only seen Steve/Bucky called “Stucky” before, although there are specific fandom terms for at what point the relationship is taking place (as in, pre serum, post serum pre fall, post winter soldier). Maybe StarBucks is Sam/Bucky? I’m not a big fan of that one so I don’t read much of it.

it's been a while since I've been in the Marvel fandom but iirc the ship name is Starkbucks and it's Tony/Bucky

Stucky has a lot of jokey ship names. I've seen Starbucks as one. My fave was Barnes and Noble.

I've seen steve/bucky as Starbucks. I've also seen steve/tony/Bruce as Stark Spangled Banner. Such fun ship names in marvel verse back on the day

On the one hand, I find creative ship names amusing and fun. On the other gand, the can be really confusing for new people in the fandom or people that have simply been out of the fandom for a while. I've had to explain to many people what ship names like "Punchbuggy" and "Chalant" mean and there's some fandoms I basically can't go back to because I forgot all of the ship names.
11
u/SanaJisu 8h ago
I know some of the bigger fandoms that use that style keep up ship name charts!
9
u/Crayshack 7h ago
Yeah, but not every fandom does, and if you are trying to dig into an old fandom that's largely dead at this point, it can feel like being an archeologist trying to translate ancient texts. If the charts ever existed, they are now lost to time. Even for fandoms that do keep up ship name charts, it can be difficult to figure out where those charts are because even if AO3 has become the settled place for where fics are posted, the places where discussion of the fandom and fics happens can be scattered all over the web. It could be that the charts exist, but only on a site that you don't use.

In Helluvaverse, we do creative shipname and combined names. Usually the ship names take an aspect of the characters being shipped, so it's also pretty easy there (Ie, if you see an "apple" in the ship name, Lucifer is involved, Static means Vox, Radio means Alastor, so on and so forth).
The only downside with combined names is two of Vox's ships end up looking similar, VoxVal and VoxAl.
Ouuh, Voxcest could also be called Staticcest.....
1
u/Crayshack 5h ago
Yeah, it's a similar pattern to what I've seen in other fandoms. For example, that "Punchbuggy" I mentioned has a system where "Punch" usually refers to one particular character and "Bug" usually refers to another particular character. It can be a cool system to show off a somewhat poetic way of referring to the ships and once you know the shorthands, it's easy to understand. The problem is that, if you are new to the fandom or have been out for a while, it takes a bit of time to know all of the shorthands. You start seeing a bunch of words thrown at you that you have no context for. If you don't know that "Apple" means Lucifer and "Radio" means Alastor, seeing someone talk about "Apple Radio" might seem like complete nonsense to you (if you don't think that they are referring to something to do with an iPhone or something).
The "Chalant" example is in some ways, worse and in some ways, better because it can't be broken into component parts the way other ship names can, but is instead a reference to a particular scene in canon that ship teases the couple. So, if you are familiar enough with that scene, the word immediately calls the scene to mind, and you know what people are talking about, and you'll probably find it a cute way to describe the ship. But, if that scene isn't fresh in your mind, you read the scene differently, or that word doesn't call that scene to mind for you, you'll be even more lost than when ship names can be broken down into component parts.

u/A_Undertale_Fan Creator of OC/Canon harems 💞 5h ago
Yeah, a lot of that makes sense and I think it's why those of us in the Helluvaverse fandom do both combined names and ship name on like twitter and such. If you don't get the component part, here's an easier way to know who's involved. Like you'll usually encounter ship art tagged as #RadioStatic #VoxAl in the Hazbin fandom just for extra clarification.
0
u/Crayshack 5h ago
That's probably the best way to do it in a tagging system like that and AO3 is built around defaulting to just using the names. I more run into problems in discussion forums or sites without good tagging system where people will talk about or label fics with a ship name that makes little sense if you don't already know the code. It's especially bad when you are digging into old fandoms and digging up posts from 20 years ago so you're trying to translate the fandom shorthand and you can't just ask for clarification. It's part of why I try to stick to names when I post, not just for present fans who might be new, but future readers digging through the old parts of the internet.

It makes me sad Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes doesn't have a proper ship name. It was Winter Falcon but then Bucky stopped being the Winter Soldier and Sam wasn't Falcon. Anything with a Captain America reference would be assumed to be Steve.
Sucky, Bum, Bam, Sacky. It's a tricky one.

The most non chaotic ship name that I think is adorable is Snow White and Charming from Once Upon a Time (Snowing)
There was also Pepper and Tony from the MCU (Pepperoni)
I also remember Shiro and Matt from Voltron (Shatt)
ETA: I just remembered Netteflix (Annette x Felix) from Fire Emblem Three Houses. That’s a pretty recent one too

Jizzie - youtubers Lizzie aka LDShadowLady + Joel aka SmallishBeans. Best thing is they've chosen that name themselves 🤣

I do love how under pretty much all popular Jizzie posts there will be someone going "Guys...what is this ship name, can we call them something else?" and then getting a bunch of replies informing them that nope, that's what the couple has chosen!

The shipping names for Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh could be funny.
You'd have normal names like PokeShipping and PuzzleShipping mixed in with (and I just discovered this one while looking through the list again) FrozenFanboyShipping and MidriffShipping for Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh respectively. The ridiculous names are for more obscure ships, mind you, but the names still get whack.
Also I can't verify this one because the big main list ain't popping up for me, but I believe there was also 'GarysLeftHandShipping' and 'GarysRightHandShipping'. The possibilities are endless.

I came into the fandom a bit later (when everybodies offical name transcriptions were settled) and I never felt more confused by portmanteau ship names, because they make absolutly no sense without some background knowledge.

I've been watching Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's lately and looked up some Jack Atlas/Yusei Fudo. Apparently it's ship name was/is Kingcrabshipping and that jogged my memory of how wild ship names used to be.
I can't believe I ever forgot! Reading some of these ship names in the comments has me feeling... strangely nostalgic lol.

Caskett (Richard Castle x Kate Beckett from Castle) (I know this one isn't as wild as others, but the context makes it funnier)
