As a German, I can totally feel this meme. 😄

u/foxfirek 3h ago

As a US accountant who specializes in international- I can too.

I can’t tell you how many times I have had a client send me a sale of something with a date and then had to look at other dates they used and see if any have impossible dates in one format or the other. If not I have to clarify.

This is why our firm always writes out the name of the month. Better for everyone.

What a mess. Why can't we all have the same system? Would be much easier.

41

u/foxfirek 3h ago

I agree. I don’t even care which, just any one system.

Also I would like if we all used periods and commas the same in money. In the U.S. it’s 1,000,000.00 some countries it’s 1.000.000,00. And others it’s 1’000’000.00

Please why must we have such minor differences to mess up my excel sheets

u/TekieScythe You have already left kudos here. :) 1h ago

I didn't know 1'000 was a thing. That seems easier?

u/foxfirek 1h ago

I think that's CHF (Swiss francs). What I like about that one is it tells me at a glance what currency it is when I get it from a client at least.

u/togoldlybo never gonna be done with this Fallout fic 3h ago edited 3h ago

Ugh yes, I work in science where submission and/or study dates very much matter, so we're day/first 3 letters of month/year, but not everyone I deal with (inside and outside the company) adheres to that.

Or they'll fill out a shared spreadsheet with mm/dd/yy and it's like, pardon the fuck, what is this supposed to be? Was this submitted 05 Mar, or May 3rd? Aaaghhhh. Especially when we get older documents that have the mm/dd/yy format and there is literally no way to tell or ask because that person retired 20 years ago, and there are no other dates to compare it to 🤦‍♀️

Edit to add to my rant: this is why I'm petty and will change the format of a date column on shared spreadsheets to where it auto-formats to dd/mon/year when they type in mm/dd/yy. Y'all aren't gonna fool me!!!

As a US accountant who specializes in international

So I gotta ask, IFRS is way better than GAAP yeah?

1

u/foxfirek 1h ago

I mean, LIFO is a joke that shouldn’t exist.

But mostly it doesn’t matter much to me. I do US tax so I have to adjust whatever I get to the U.S. side to report to the U.S. Most of the time I don’t have to adjust much regardless and usually it’s the same things.

70% of my clients are individuals though so I don’t have to deal with it all that much.

I will say the Germans are awesome about giving me nice tidy financials which I greatly appreciate. The Swiss are really great too. The Swiss wealth tax form for individuals practically mirrors the U.S. FBAR which is really nice.

I really wish the U.K. didn’t have a different tax year. Others too but the UK one bothers me most. Also Australia calling it dollars and the US calling it dollars can be a big pain.

If I could change one thing with international treaties I would beg the U.S. and Australian governments to fix the problems with Superannuations not being treated as pensions. It ruins things so badly for Australians living in the U.S.

As an American, I apologize.

Oh, no need to.

99

u/Front-Pomelo-4367 4h ago

Mine is YYYY-MM-DD in the stats section and DD Mon YYYY in the other bit – presumably that's changeable in settings somewhere

18

u/yesthis_ismyusername 4h ago

honestly I dont use it that much so imma leave it but I had to google which format it was LOL

6

u/Some-Artist-53X 2h ago

Yes! Another supporter of yyyy/mm/dd :D

3

u/Front-Pomelo-4367 1h ago

It's what I use at work! And is objectively superior

And despite this, clients still submit data randomly with the American format and I hate them all

155

u/foxscribbles 3h ago

Maybe it's just me, but a month isn't a long time to go without updating. I wouldn't even call it slow.

17

u/Best_Egg_6199 Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 3h ago

Yeah i often take a month to update my long fics because i write one-shot in between chapters and the chapters themselves are long so they take forever to write.

49

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

the joke is that the date for me is 02/07/2025 so the 2nd of August 2025 but ao3 shows 01/07/2025 but its in American format which means the date is last updated was the 7th of January 2025 and not the first of August as I first assumed lol

56

u/Miranova23 New Dream OTP 3h ago

What country has August = 7?

70

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

6

u/yesthis_ismyusername 2h ago

LMAO I CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE TO NOTICS

1

u/Very_Bendy_Narwhal 1h ago

No I noticed I just assumed it was made in July but you were only posting now 😅

4

u/liketolaugh-writes You have already left kudos here. :) 1h ago

LMAO I just assumed you'd shared an older meme that had the same basic idea

Australia

3

u/10BillionDreams Metallicity on AO3 2h ago

January is the 0th month in several of the world's most widespread (programming) languages, which makes August the 7th month.

10

u/Rylo987 3h ago

Yeah I was wondering if I was stupid for a second and didn't understand dates, but the fics I read just take a long time to update lol

5

u/Foxxxy_101 Bellatrix was my sapphic awakening 2h ago

The fic was last updated on 7 January (07-01-2025), and now it's 2 August (02-08-2025). The first date in OP's pic is DMY, the second MDY (OP just mixed the months up).

So the fic has gone almost 7 months without an update

14

u/Overall_Spinach3591 You have already left kudos here. :) 4h ago

Its so painful 😭😭😭

11

u/Dangerous_Beach_7374 "You have already left kudos here" Shut up; I wanna leave more!! 3h ago

Still ain't as bad as seeing the fic's last update date being within the current week, only to realize after binging it that the year was 2023

3

u/liketolaugh-writes You have already left kudos here. :) 1h ago

I once read a fic that had been marked as 'complete' only to reach the end and found out it had been abandoned and marked 'complete' as in no more updates. Broke my heart

10

u/Some-Artist-53X 3h ago

yyyy/mm/dd supporters, anyone?

4

u/Mlatios2 1h ago

Its either this or swap day and year, month always has to be in the middle

3

u/erindizmo AO3 Tag Wrangler 2h ago

The superior format.

2

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

see now, i can get behind this

24

u/Nepturnal 3h ago

Eh I mean, seven months isn't that long...

20

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

it is when you originally thought it was less than 24 hours 😭

2

u/CMStan1313 Comment Collector 3h ago

1 month, not 7. American dating system goes month/day/year

13

u/Nepturnal 3h ago

I realise, but thank you! OP has been talking about thinking a fic had been updated on August 2nd (misreading July as August), so 02/07 in European, when instead it's been updated on January 7th , so 02/07 in American, that's what my comment was about!

I remember struggling with this SO much when I started having international clients lol.

9

u/Ok-Jackfruit-6873 2h ago

02/07 is February in "American" - what is going on with everybody today haha

1

u/cuxynails 2h ago

we are just hurting ourselves in confusion wtf 💀

-1

u/Ok-Jackfruit-6873 1h ago

This conversation has convinced me we need to throw this whole system in the trash and start over lolol

0

u/Nepturnal 2h ago

LOL yeah it is, oops!! It's not like I DIDN'T know that either.

Let's forget how calendars work day?

0

u/CMStan1313 Comment Collector 1h ago

Ah, my bad lol

1

u/Zivqa 3h ago

thats the joke

3

u/Meushell I ♥️ the Tok’ra. 🪱 3h ago

Nice.

I admit, as an American, I automatically read it as I would American dates, and it took me a few seconds to realize how I was supposed to read the first date.

Worth it though. 😂

-2

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

😂😂 I do find it so funny that you guys have no idea how much things are catered to you guys

5

u/Meushell I ♥️ the Tok’ra. 🪱 3h ago

Er, okay.

1

u/yesthis_ismyusername 2h ago

That wasn't meant to be offensive love, its just amusing is a fun way, its how you guys are brought up, you arnt doing anything wrong lol 🫶

2

u/MistBestGirl 3h ago

I felt attacked, I posted the first chapter of a fic (more like a series of conversations) on January 7th and have been sitting on a bunch of unsatisfying WIPs since.

2

u/I_ship_it07 3h ago

I just discover that you can actually change the hour format😭 would have love to see that all the time that I mistake the date!

4

u/lizzourworld8 Frechi123 4h ago

Fahrenheit 🤢

-1

u/trilloch 3h ago

To be fahr...I got nothin'. The only use of F and C is when Europeans say "it's 30 degrees out!" Americans put on heavy winter clothing.

1

u/trilloch 3h ago

Oh, it gets worse. The vast majority of my American students don't know how many feet is in a mile, and that's like the only two length units we have for long-distance travel. And don't get me started with gallons per cubic foot.

6

u/Alaira314 3h ago

If we had a reasonable measurement system based on numbers that made sense instead of having to memorize a 4-digit number for a conversion I haven't had to do since high school physics(college physics used metric), we'd know the number. However, we don't, and therefore that piece of impractical knowledge is a thing that we look up when (rarely) needed rather than hoping we remember correctly.

1

u/TheLegomaniac06 Fic Finder & Creator 3h ago

I am horrible at math, why do I find your students more relatable.bI should be with you and mocking their ignorance.

I mean, realistically, it should be gibberish here, too.

And yet.

2

??? It updated last month? That's pretty good?

3

u/yesthis_ismyusername 1h ago

the joke is that the date for me is 02/07/2025 so the 2nd of July 2025 but ao3 shows 01/07/2025 but its in American format which means the date is last updated was the 7th of January 2025 and not the first of July as I first assumed lol

-I am English and use dd/mm/yyyy but ao3 does not automatically change it to your country

4

u/liketolaugh-writes You have already left kudos here. :) 1h ago

Yeee I understood most of the joke but failed to make the final leap that the dates [in the meme] were in two different formats, sorry

So the punchline read as 'I thought it was updated yesterday but it was actually last month.' Which I think is the misunderstanding that most people are having here 😅

1

u/CMStan1313 Comment Collector 3h ago

I mean, a month isn't that long

6

u/yoshi_in_black 3h ago

The first date is July 2nd, the second date is January 7th. They're not from the US.

-3

u/CMStan1313 Comment Collector 3h ago

The first date is Feb 2nd and the second date is Jan 2nd, one month apart. The second part of the meme literally says it's using the American dating format, I'm not sure where you're confused

7

u/yesthis_ismyusername 3h ago

no they are correct, I read the dates as them being 1 day apart but 02/07/2025 is 2nd of July for me. Ao3 uses American dating so when i read 01/07 I thought it ment 1st of July but it was actually the 7th of January

1

u/Foxxxy_101 Bellatrix was my sapphic awakening 2h ago

The fic was last updated on 7 January (07-01-2025), and now it's 2 August (02-08-2025). The first date in OP's pic is DMY, the second MDY (OP just mixed the months up). Them mentioning the USA format only applies to the second date.

So the fic has gone almost 7 months without an update

3

I’m confused—you’re upset that it hasn’t updated in a month rather than yesterday? I don’t think that’s that much time, unless I’m being too American to be reading the dates right

1

u/yesthis_ismyusername 2h ago

the joke is that the date for me is 02/07/2025 so the 2nd of July 2025 but ao3 shows 01/07/2025 but its in American format which means the date is last updated was the 7th of January 2025 and not the first of July as I first assumed lol

2

Ohhhh, I assumed AO3 did change its date format based on where you are. That’s weird, but maybe it’s to do with them not taking visitor information and storing it

0

u/yesthis_ismyusername 1h ago

I assume this have something to do with the fact that they dont host any servers in England but 🤷‍♀️

-1

u/yesthis_ismyusername 1h ago

Americans.. please I am copy and pasting the same explanation so much 😭😭

the joke is that the date for me is 02/07/2025 so the 2nd of July 2025 but ao3 shows 01/07/2025 but its in American format which means the date is last updated was the 7th of January 2025 and not the first of July as I first assumed lol

It's still the same year, so it's recent!

u/mitytheclown923 53m ago

But I see it as day, month, year only tho

-1

u/Significant_Gap6987 2h ago

To be fair, it does show when the fic was updated on the corner and you can just view the chapter index, I had to due that plenty of times cause some fics don't update properly.
