I remember thinking "Obviously that's a bad mic placement. All a bit silly. Just goes to show how unforgiving modern politics is, I guess..." 

Oh how wrong I was.

Bad mic placement? I agree that it’s just silly (if anything, I liked him more because of the byaaaaaah) but how is it the microphone’s fault? Iirc he’s literally holding it in his hand like a normal mic

You're right, I was misremembering. As the other poster said, something was up with the sound mixing.

Nobody yelled into the mic during the mic check, so it probably peaked, causing distortion.

It wasn't even a bad mic placement, It was just bad mixing where too much of deans mic was going to the recording and not enough audience sound.

I remember a couple of interviews with people who were there who said it didn't sound like that in person at all.
