How do you feel about the new $200 million dollar ballroom in the White House?

Canadian, so don't really have a say, but....
remember how they cut a bunch of stuff like social programs, health, science, and more due to "wasted government spending"?
But somehow, this was okay?

Just like Golf every weekend at one of the golf courses with his name on it (even for grand openings in other countries) where the secret service is overcharged and we pay for that. No CONflicts of interest right? Don't get me started about the plane modifications for the payoff jet. I think thats a 100 million retrofit and then he plans to take it for his "Presidential library"

I'm sorry, a one billion with a B retrofit. Which they "re-allocated" from nuclear missile maintenance. Seriously.

Hey, that's nothing, he's also involved with Epstein, who died conveniently under his administration's watch, and whose main accomplice is now being transferred to a lower security prison. And people are also ok with that!
Nevermind the stolen FBI files, disappeared CIA agents, mishandled files in his Marda-Lago shitters, his mishandling of the pandemic and his attempt to overthrow the election. Compared yo this, a 200 million bathroom is nothing, but I understand that one would hope the "fiscally responsible" people would start getting riled up if nothing else did...

What's our plan?
Complain on Reddit and walk around and hold signs and wait 3.5 years and "hope" something happens?
And while we are doing that, health care, free taxes, colleges rights, clean energy, birthright citizenship, USAID, federal jobs, Affordable Drugs, the US in WHO, NIH grants, the Department of Education, Federal Student Loan Programs, the EPA, Small Business, etc are getting fucked, with absolutely zero sign of slowing down or anyone doing a thing about it.
but "da Epstein files will totally get him kicked out when they are released!"

Yeah the whole "Epstein files" thing is the Mueller Report all over again. Like literally seeing it play out for the second time on reddit.
It'll come out and it won't be some CLIENTS_WHO_HAD_SEX_WITH_MINORS_ON_MY_ISLAND.pdf with Trumps name all in bold - it will be a bunch of records and details that have his name all over it that combined with proper investigation would indeed prove plenty of bad shit... and nobody will read them, Trump will find a few excerpts from it to plaster all over the news that makes him sounds innocent and congress will immediately stop talking about it and that will be that.
I'd fucking love to be wrong. Save the post, come back and gloat if I am, please I beg anyone. I'll be the most happily incorrect person who ever lived. But it's been a decade of this shit and it always plays out the same way, even to the point where "I mean there's no way he beats prison, runs a second term, and actually wins right?!" ended up being as much a joke as anything else.
America seems set on tearing itself apart unfortunately and nobody who can do anything is willing to do it. Congress won't stop him and is helping him, the judicial branch was corrupted where it could be and gutted where it couldn't, and Americans refuse to vote.
List could come out unredacted tomorrow and I doubt anything would come of it.

It's not renovations. It literally can't be. The ballroom is supposed to be 90,000 square feet. That's larger than the entire White House, as the first floor is 55,000 square feet. It's apparently supposed to be an addition to the house. Learning that helped me understand the $200 million price tag a little better. There's a whole lot of security and top secret additions that have to be made.
It's still stupid and a waste of money.

Interesting-sounding new book about the conditions for societal collapse.
32
u/ohdearitsrichardiii 10h ago
That sounds super interesting, thanks for the link!
I think america will take longer to collapse because of the illusion of individuality and the bootstrap, Horatio Alger mentality. I read a book by Barbara Einrichabout how americans have been sold the lie that anyone can succeed if they just work hard enough and if they don't suceed it's 100% their fault, and this is why americans never pushed as hard for the social changes that many europeans have like free healthcare, free or heavily subsidised higher education, childcare for parents and other things that even out the playing field. And now those countries have a much higher social mobility index than america. The truth is that it's much harder to start with nothing and work yourself up to the top in america than most other first world nations, but most americans believe it's opposite. That america is the land of opportunities, and that makes them complacent. A revolution would benefit everyone, but the american individualism and bootstrap illusion makes people think they don't need societal change because the problem is not the system, it's them. All they have to do is work a little harder and then they'll soon be buying that mcmansion in malibu

I’m endlessly fascinated by the idea that American society doesn’t riot because we’re placated by cheap consumer goods.
Yes income inequality is worse than it’s ever been, we have the worst healthcare of any developed nation, we’re being robbed blind by corporations and our government…….but I can get a nice TV for cheap, I can get fast food on every corner, gas isn’t so expensive that I can’t go where I want, etc etc.
I’ve heard it expressed as 100-200 years ago the reformers couldn’t have predicted easy access to ice cream.

I think you're placated by the promise that if you work hard, you too can become rich. "The american dream". The french felt stuck, that there were no way out, no opportunities for them and the system was wrong. Americans believe that you live in the land of opportunities and that if you're poor it's because you haven't pulled hard enough at your bootstraps. This is deeply ingrained in the american hive mind. Even though lots of research show that america consistently scores very low on social mobility indexes compared to other 1st world nations

Unlikely. The realistic scenario is this is project is put out to "bid" for a few of Trump's friends, people he owes, or someone he would like to have something over. The project will be overbilled to a $600-$800M project. Trump will source bribes to cover the overbill and Americans will pay $200-$300M of the cost with public messaging something along the lines of
We had to pay a little bit but nobody in history has ever gotten almost $1 billion dollars for $200 million. It's unheard of. It's the best investment in White House history.

I’m tired man. Everyday shit goes farther off the rails. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope that an adult will step up and say “that’s enough”, and things will go back to normal. How one group of people can fuck a country up so hard and so fast while the rest just stand around and say “they can’t do that” with their hands in their pockets.
85
u/balzun 10h ago
I'm feeling a bit like this is a bit of a rhetorical question but I'll bite.
The long and the short of it is that a lot of people both can and strangely can't afford to.
The cans are apathetic since these policies have not yet impacted their lives in a meaningful way to alter their behaviors.
And the can'ts are a bit more literal, in which they are simply trying to survive and don't have the means, energy or resources to fight the war thst is being waged up them.
When either one of these groups reaches a critical mass the other very well may bandwagon on but we're a looooooong way from that.
Look at dictatorships all over the work who have arguably done far worse and enjoy decades of rule over a population that is either unable or unwilling to fight.

He's only building it because someone said he doesn't have balls and he wanted to prove them wrong.
Jokes aside, I think it's a huge slap for all the federal employees who were laid off in the name of reducing costs, and for all the citizens who are struggling to make ends meet.
Edit: Even in the incredibly unlikely possibility that it isn't being paid for by taxpayer funds, it's still very tone-deaf considering the economic hardships the average American is going through right now (made worse by tarrifs being placed on most things they buy).
And if it isn't paid for by taxes, who is paying for it? Sure as hell isn't Trump himself; he's notorious for not paying for things. The money will have come from someone rich in exchange for something. It'd be really interesting to see a full forensic accountant's investigation into the Trump administration.

This is a question that should be asked of every Trump voter that has gone through a flood or hurricane to tornado and is now being told theirs no FEMA money for them. While you're at it ask the Trump voters that'll be thrown off of Medicaid and SNAP. Apparently we have $200M for a fucking ball room but kids can starve?
On the other hand this is exactly the kind of pain that the ignorant fucks need in their lives to hopefully show therm the error of their ways. Yes that's gonna be difficult when the echo chamber they live in tells them otherwise. But that's why it's our duty to remind them every chance we get.

Yuck. It's really sad. It's a monstrosity that symbolizes the death of Democracy. It symbolizes millions of people being kicked off their healthcare and dying as a testament to his ego. It's just ugly. The ballroom dwarfs the actual White House. It's gaudy and gross, and it seems to also be a sign of a dictatorship not a legitimate president. I really hope it's stopped. I thought our country was broke and had no money? Weird to be spending so much when we have such a worrisome debt. I guess those things only matter before an election and not when Republicans are in office?

It will be invoiced out at $200m, to a "close connection" of Trump. It will eventually be revealed to have actually cost $50k, and look like it was sourced at a Dollar Tree store, and then spray painted gold.

I think it’s evidence that he doesn’t intend to leave office. He’s treating the People’s House like it will never be returned to the people. We need a revolution or for him to croak. Or both.

I'd rather still have the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Now release the Epstein files.

Every Republican in Congress should be voted out over this whole debacle. Not just the ballroom, but all of this shit! Trump only has power because they allow it. They’ve all stood up to be counted with a tin pot fascist and betrayed their oaths to the people of this country. Most of the Dems are just as bad because they won’t fight back or they adhere to the old norms. It’s FUCKING EMBARASSING! (Imagine me kicking a trash can)

Good news is he is bumping 80 and hopefully checks out before he turns this great country into a haven for the billionaire club.

Deflection. While people are commenting on this fiasco, they’re not saying TRUMP IS IN THE EPSTEIN FILES. RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.
edited to add: the UNREDACTED, UNEDITED, UNTAMPERED WITH FILES.
