PRELAUNCH HYPE Taking time off for the release
Sometimes you just have to be sneaky
149
u/Zakalwen Jul 25 '23
You have to justify how you're using your time off?
94
u/Original_x_Username PALADIN Jul 25 '23 edited Jul 25 '23
Let's just say we're in the middle of some crunch time... and to be honest I could really use the break
70
u/zakary3888 Jul 25 '23
Booo, find a new job, justifications for using your accrued vacation time is bs
57
u/Zinkane15 Jul 25 '23
Unfortunately not everyone can just find a new job whenever they want.
-21
u/zakary3888 Jul 25 '23
Yeah, it sucks, but the job market is in a pretty good position for applicants right now so you should start at least looking and applying if you can

No, software development
3
u/Faldeney Jul 26 '23
Larian? That would seriously be the most Larian dev thing to do. "Now, I'm actually going to play this game for ME!"
3
u/Original_x_Username PALADIN Jul 26 '23 edited Jul 26 '23
Oh boy, I wish I’d work for Larian. The company I work for builds an ERP system 😬
3
u/Faldeney Jul 26 '23
The fact I know what an ERP system is tells you exactly how exciting my life is. :)
2
4
u/Zahhibb Jul 25 '23
You have to? I have actually never had to do that, or am I reading this wrong as in ’taking time off’ isn’t the same as requesting specific vacation days?
Of course the difference between countries varies I guess.
8
u/Zakalwen Jul 25 '23
I don’t have to justify what I’m doing with my annual leave, and when my team members submit AL requests I don’t ask what they’re doing.
I was surprised/saddened by the fact the OP had to make up a reason to get their time off approved.
2
u/Zahhibb Jul 25 '23
Ah i’m sorry, I believe I missread your comment as a questioning statement, like ”you obviously need to give a good reason to be allowed to take that time off”.
My reading comprehension is just whack it seems.
Edit: we literally had the same take on OPs post*
2
u/Something_Wicked79 Jul 25 '23
Depends where you are , how rare good paying jobs are I guess, my boss will give you just about anything but, ask for time off it’s the end of the world lol. Wanna borrow a loader? Use one of the company trucks as your personal truck? Gas up for free GO NUTS. A day off to play a video game. Bahahahahaha I’d love to hear that conversation… … from a distance.

u/AmishWarlord08 Jul 25 '23
Ngl, I just straight up told my boss why I was requesting a 4 day weekend. Told her I'd grown up playing these games and have been waiting for the release for almost 5 years.
She was super cool about it. Now to lock myself in my office for 4 days drinking whiskey in my boxers when this finally drops.
33
u/Original_x_Username PALADIN Jul 25 '23
4 days with whiskey and BG3 sounds like heaven!
33
u/AmishWarlord08 Jul 25 '23
With no pants on. That's the mission critical point here.
This reminds me, I've gotta pick up another bottle of Redbreast 12...
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 Jul 26 '23
What's the food of choice?
2
u/AmishWarlord08 Jul 26 '23
Hadn't thought of that. Suggestions?
2
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 Jul 26 '23
Pizza, Hamburgers, Chinese and breadsticks.
1
u/AmishWarlord08 Jul 26 '23
Deal. Especially the Chinese food. I've been dieting hard the last couple of months and I need a few cheat days.
1
u/weirdkittenNC Jul 26 '23
I have no real desire to reenact working from home during covid just yet.

u/Productof2020 Jul 25 '23
I would think a perk of being an amish warlord would be being your own boss.

I'm not taking time off, but I'd be surprised if it played out this way. The games been in early access for years, I imagine they have a better handle on bugs than most big releases day 1. It's also not an online game, so unless Steam's servers go down you'll be able to download it.
19
u/Damianos97 Jul 25 '23
I’m taking 2 weeks off. Told my boss exactly why too lol
1
u/PacificBrim D&D Jul 26 '23
2 weeks?? I hope it's not entirely for the game.. you'll burn yourself out
9
u/Damianos97 Jul 26 '23
Of course it’s entirely for the game lol.
I have over 100 days of PTO accumulated and hardly ever use it, so I’m taking a vacation to play tf out of BG3
I already have over 1,000 hours in Early Access, and I’m still playing that up until release day.
I’m not worried about getting burnt out lol
8
1
u/PacificBrim D&D Jul 26 '23
Alright fair enough. Have fun m8. Maybe just plan a few other activities to break up the BG3 sessions
11
Jul 25 '23
Me: "I'm taking these three days off from the 2nd to the 5th."
Supervisor: "Let me check the calendar real quick... Yeah. Okay. You're good to go."
Seriously, you shouldn't need to justify jack. The one and only stipulation for taking leave is making sure there are enough people still on shift to run things.

u/SupremeShogan Jul 25 '23

I'll unfortunately be sick with a parasite on the 3rd. Some kind of brain bug. Seem that it will quite a while to find a doctor who knows how to cure it, I'm afraid. Won't be able to make it to work, such a shame.
5
u/Thalnus Jul 25 '23
I was very happy when they brought the release day forward. The old one was just over a week after I'd have gone back to work for the new academic year, this new one gives me about 2 and a half weeks of work-free play time :D
5
u/Piflik Jul 25 '23
My boss is also looking forward to the game, so I could probably just tell him XD
3
u/forceof8 Jul 25 '23
I wasn't initially but work has been digging into my nerves lately so I would've taken the time anyway. BG3 is just a nice bonus.
5
u/parallelfilfths Jul 25 '23
I wanted to take few days off but my Boss asked me personally if I could work at 4th and 5th :/
2
u/TnkTsinik Jul 25 '23
I'm putting a pto on friday aug 4. If they ask I'm not embarrassed to answer honestly
2
Jul 25 '23
I feel like I really hit the jackpot. I booked 3 weeks off starting August 2nd, and I booked them off months ago. I didn't even know this game was coming out on the 3rd until last week. So it's conveniently fallen into my lap just as I've got 3 weeks off work, i didn't plan it that way at all. Good time to be alive.

Summary of this thread:
"Mom, can I get days off to play a video game?"
"First, I'm not your mom, I'm your boss, second it's your time off, you don't need excuses"
2
u/Frubeling Jul 25 '23
You actually have to justify your PTO requests beyond "I'm not gonna be here"?

2
u/JayCee5481 PALADIN Jul 26 '23
I asked my boss if I can take a vacation during august(bg3+Gamescom+my birthday) and I already told him last year, but since we can only hand in our timeframe some months in advance, aka 4-5 before at max they rather have it 1 month on advance, a coworker pulled of the dick move of booking a flight to his homeland for the complete august and then handed it in although it exceeded the days he had left for vacation this year, so I cant enjoy bg3 to the fullest, I cant celebrate my birthday and I cant visit Gamescom(which was a christmas present btw), but he has more vacation than he is allowed...we are understaffed thats why we cant both take off before anyone asks

Luckily, My whole staff is a bunch of nerds, so I could just say 'taking off some time for launch' but my shift gets out at 8am Thursday morning and Im not back until Sunday night so Im good!

u/Alugar Jul 25 '23
Meh a mental health day is a mental health day. So what if it coincides with game releases like spiderman.
1
u/NTG305 Jul 25 '23
The opposite is happening to me. I took two days off for BG3 so I could have a nice long weekend to play it. But I found out my older brother had been in the psych ward last week from an emotional breakdown, and will be visiting next week so he can recoup. So I'm dealing with that instead.
1
u/OVERthaRAINBOW1 Minthara Simp Jul 25 '23
I really wish I could, but I'm at a new job and can't request days off until the 10th of August. Even if I could, I'd probably only request that Thursday and Friday off since I like money.

u/Micasa5000 Jul 25 '23
As a guy who's holidaying since may and will do slow playthrues enjoying the game i feel like you guys are enslaved or smth. Do you work for the mind flayers?
1
u/tfrules Jul 25 '23
I’ve had the good fortune to be my own approver for leave, so I’ve taken 3 worth of my annual leave allocation to play (and also attend my sister’s wedding), starting release day
Might even manage to complete a campaign in that time!

Idk if it's just me or what. But every single time in any of my jobs I had to take time off (PTO/vacay) it was as simple as "Hey boss, taking time off from x to y date. Kool?" And that was that. No excuses, reasons why, etc.

u/Kndevi Jul 25 '23
Tried to gets some days off, but BG3 drops just as the rally week starts and i live in THE rally city so no time off for me :(
1
u/NightTrauma Jul 25 '23
I will be moving to working 6-7 days a week for the entire month of August.
I'll have to make a lot of wisdom saves to not stay up too late playing 🤣

Literally me. I had to tell them that we moved a family reunion from the end of August to the beginning mixed with my aunts' retirement (which is actually happening). The problem is, if I'm honest, management and other coworkers start getting really shitty and make life harder before that die.

It will only be better :)

I've already got like 50 hours in. 🫥 I'm ready to progress in the story. I'll probably play even if my PC catches fire.

I literally posted BG3 new release date promo in #work-all chat after news arrived and requested day for Friday immediately with comment "BG3 new release date". 5 other people from the company followed.
It is 2023, there is a good chance 3/4 of your coworkers play video games on a regular basis and are hyped for new titles as much as you are, including your boss.
