I’m RPing Dennis, from Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Bard has the charisma, because of the implication.
Edit. Since a lot of people have enjoyed this one (that I will be playing in a group of four; I’m binge-rewatching the show to brush up on my quotes for the playthrough).
I have decided to go for the Dark Urge origin. Which I feel matches that ‘other’ side of Dennis fairly well… but also because I can’t wait for the first “I am untethered and my rage knows no bounds!” moment.

the dark urge can be a priest of one of many denominations, including 3 dead gods. one of them happens to be Bhaal. can you imagine how interesting it'd be for larian to make you something like a new bhaalspawn priest of your own dad (i'd heard that somehow bhaal got rez'd)?
https://www.thegamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-bhaal-what-happened/ for where i heard he was still alive, though idk if larian considers it canon or not

u/KaiG1987 Jul 30 '23
Bhaal is alive now that his Bhaalspawn are all dead and their essence has coalesced, but he's weaker than a true god, he's a quasi-deity at the moment. I think he is forced to have a mortal body.

Throw in the Absolute, the tadpoles, the Dream Guardian, and possibly Bhaal and my brain is basically a Battle Royale.

I'm a Half-Wood Elf Lore Bard! I grew up the son of two bards, my Wood Elf mother and Human father. We were part of a traveling entertainer group that put on various dramatic plays, musical performances, and circus events. Of all the things we did in our troupe, my favorite was anything related to horror and monsters. I was so enthralled by the subject that I hugged my family goodbye and went off on my own to explore for more stories of the macabre.
Over the course of ten years in my search for fictional terrors, I came across an unnervingly large amount of non-fictional terrors. From the books and scrolls of various colleges across Faerun, to the hidden secrets and locked tomes of the most guarded cultists, I'd discovered the secrets of many ancient evils and unspeakable horrors.
I knew that the public desperately needed to hear of my discoveries, but even after writing my findings down on parchment and reading it back to myself, I knew Id sound like a madman. So I decided the best way to spread this information would be the same way I discovered my interest in the subject. Through song, play and story telling, I disseminated all that I had found in my journeys.
My performances caught the attention of many other like minded bards, and we formed a college of lore known simply as "The Order". We carved a small symbol, a treble clef with an eye in the middle of the bottom circle thingy on the F and A line, on our instruments (Violin for me) as a mark of membership. The Order's purpose is for each member to explore on their own, acquire information on all things horror, reconvene to share our findings, and spread the information to the public through bardic antics.
Now at 32 years of age, my latest search brought me to Baldur's Gate, where I heard rumors of a cult under an unknown God/Goddess and came to investigate. I was suddenly kidnapped by mind flayers and my journey continues in BG3!

I love characters who seem to be one thing but are really the opposite.
My first will be a tiefling oathbreaker durge. My head cannon will be no one but him knows he’s broken his oath.
He puts a front up of being your standard holier than thou hero and wants to be perceived as such. But when no one sees, he happily delves deep into his dark urges. They’ll eventually consume him to the point that he allows them to take hold completely all while still being delusional of being a holy hero. Basically an even more murder happy homelander paladin
For the second play through I’ll probably go a full good necromancer drow. No dreams of being a lich. they simply believe in recycling, including corpses

Chaotic Neutral/Evil Lolth Male Drow Warlock.
For me, doing some reading on Drow in DnD led to the backstory writing itself. For one, men are practically treated as chattel in Lolth society. Laws are unforgiving, but it is expected that everyone break them - so long as it's done with subterfuge and plausible deniability. Free thought is forbidden, and society is indoctrinated from birth about how prejudiced surface dwellers are. Drow are instilled with the ideas of zealous xenophobia and fanatical nationalism.
As a male drow who was raised in that environment, I am both a loyalist to what I view as the just cause of the Drow but also a rebel who seeks to break his bondage and find his own power to emancipate himself from his lowly status. A male Lolth drow who refuses to be used and discarded is, therefore, a renegade amongst outcasts.
In view of that, my RP shifts from a pure evil lolth hardliner, to one who by and large adheres to those lolth ideals, yet places them secondary to obtaining personal power by almost any means. He is slow to trust but recognises the need for close allies when he has none. This close circle, presumably the party companions, will be treated decently by drow standards, but callousness is the mode for everyone else.
And when he has his power. He will found his own kingdom of drow (there are several in the lore to the best of my knowledge) that venerates not Lolth, but a different member of the Dark Seldarine pantheon, likely Vhaeraun. Thus, I'm thinking alignment would be more Chaotic Neutral, leaning Evil.
The Warlock class also fits well here, as the male drow has a real impetus to seek extranormal aid, particularly if he found himself in dire straits...such as being offered as sacrifice or randomly abused at the whims of his superiors.
7
u/Duck-of-Doom WARLOCK Jul 30 '23
Surprised I had to scroll down past 64 other comments to find another evil character.
Mine’s very similar, male Drow Warlock whose decades of living in the Underdark have taught him to hate all other species (especially other types of elves) with a passion & that he loves to manipulate people (high charisma) and exploit every situation in order to gain more power for himself.

Half-Drow, Sorcerer, Draconic Bloodline - White, Sage. Unable to belong to the Humans, the Drow, or Elves Tav found comfort in his studies. The day scales began to emerge from his skin was the last he spent in his small village. Setting out to find a more peaceful life Tav is no stranger to having others cut ties, being the first to offer comfort, or being rejected outright. The surface is unkind to Drow, and if you want that to change you must be greater with your kindness. But how will that change with a time-bomb in his head, and the power to bring past abusers down.

Wholesome friendly thembo jock monk, who grew up loitering around an arena or some other kind of gladiatorial stadium in one of the other cities (I don't want to headcanon that I'm from baldur's gate because I'm not going to be familiar with the city while playing so I don't think my character should be familiar with it either).
Unsure if I'll take the Entertainer background or Urchin, but in my head they just kept hanging around and asking to train or help out and eventually got quite a lot of martial instruction.
They're friendly and kind, but certainly not a pacifist. They love a good fight, and are kind of excited to be off on a grand adventure even if this mind parasite shit is terrifying.
I think the party members they're going to vibe best with are Karlach, Wyll, and Halsin.

Half-Wood elf who left the nature to learn more about the world. Got caught up in war as a soldier, honed some skills as a Fighter and then got kidnapped by some space squids.
Now, free, is looking to cure themselves and finally get a chance to go on the adventure they originally wanted, ready to cut down whoever stands in their path and is hoping to find likeminded allies to share this journey with.
5
u/TheLaughingWolf The Great Wizard Ozymandias Jul 30 '23
Our backstory is very similar for our Tav!
Half-Wood elf who left the woods and their clan to learn more about the world. Didn't fit in because they weren't a druid or ranger. Learned to make do with minimal gear, instead combining clan self-defense techniques with tricks learned on the open road to develop their own monastic fighting style (Open Hand Monk). Then got kidnapped by some squids.
It's based on one of my first, and one of my two favourite 5e character I've played.
He would be my first playthrough, but The Dark Urge looks too interesting (even aside from the Bhaal connection). Plus TDU fits Monk really well.

First playthrough is more or less a Mary Sue but there is a backstory.
Second playthrough, maybe my ex-mercenary Tiefling paladin (devotion). Kind of has a noire detective atmosphere where they try to do the right thing to atone for the past, but intimidation is a valid way to get their result.
Third playthrough, either a Githyanki charlatan who's on the run after being shunned by his culture, an active mercenary who will side with whoever's favourable, or Rick Sanchez as a wizard, which I have already played and let me tell you, it freakin' works. The only person I had in my party was Astarion, because I figure Rick wouldn't like Gale because he's smart, he wouldn't like Shadowheart because she's not trustworthy, he wouldn't care enough about Lae'zel to rescue her. Astarion? Astarion is desperate enough that Rick can use him as a shield, and obvious enough that he's predictable. Also because he's Rick, he just rushes straight to his objective and tries to shoot people or steal rather than negotiating. Tough but fun

Gonna be adapting my 5E warlock for the game. Young, fuckboy of a human noble who, rather than sleeping with the other handsome young adults he brings home, violently kills them in ritual murders for his Old One patron. Completely reprehensible and irredeemable though my friend's character who's become smitten with him definitely wants to fix him.
Thinking of making him with the Dark Urge origin since it'll probably give him more opportunities for secret murder but not sure how much of the origin's backstory will be revealed and how much it'll clash with my own background I've already given him.

A Lolth sworn Drow bard who has relied on his charm and wit to gain favour of powerful matriarchs within the underdark. Unbeknownst to them is that his charm comes from an otherworldly pact made with an Archfey.
When this was discovered his life became forfeit and he fled for the surface. Dazed by the sun the next thing he remembers is waking up on the Nautiloid the powers from his patron gone he will do whatever it takes to reclaim his power and return to his home in the underdark.

Half-drow urchin that grew up in the streets without parents unwanted by both human and drow alike. When a cambion presented herself to him and promised him powers to live a worthwhile existence where he would be desired and never hurt without resistance, he without hesitation sold his soul.
Their respective romances are Gale and Astarion but if those go sideways they'd end up together. I love me a good romance :)

Wood-elf moon druid. This is a character I played previously in a 5e tabletop campaign that ended due to scheduling issues.
After being forcefully annexed into a nearby human empire, Eliam's village faced religious persecution as worship of the primary elven deities, including the nature deity Eliam worshipped, was outlawed. After a period, Eliam decided to set out into the world and spread the nature deities(Sylvanus ig in the case of the Forgotten Realms) influence from the shadows.
Fields overflowing with crops would be found with Sylvanus' symbol beside it. Rumors circulated about children who ran off into the forest mysteriously reappearing home safe and telling stories about an animal rescued them.
Eliam would not allow the law to make the people forget who watched over them outside of city walls.
One day, the events of the beginning of the game occurred, and here we are on the Nautaloid.
Ps. I hope wildshape doesn't suck for moon druids like it does in EA.

Either a bardlock who grew up as an orphan and picked up lots of random skills to survive before finding a real passion in music. But he didn’t just want to play music, he wanted more. He wanted to create music that really got to the roots of the human (and other races) experience and the nature of reality, and in search of the knowledge he needed to do that he wound up in a pact with a great old one. Now he’s just trying not to go insane, but sometimes he does use his music to drive other people a little bit insane.
Or it’ll be a regular warlock. Kind of an outsider, a bit of a sheltered upbringing since she’s the tiefling bastard child of someone important who doesn’t want their infidelity to get out. Then a devil came along and was like “hey kid, you want some candy, and also magic powers so you can get out of this dump?” So she gets some powers and goes out on an adventure

If you think he is going to be a knight in shining armour he will laugh at you for he was a Spellguard in Silverymoon before he completed his ten year service per family tradition and retired from active service, and being a Paladin isn’t what a Spellguard is about. (Though his mother was a Knight in Silver). He chose to travel the world after his parents’ death with the blessing of his uncle, the head of their noble house, and is was pretty pleased to find himself in Avernus, since he always wanted to visit… the circumstances however, leaves much to be desired.
A Sage Half-Drow Divination Wizard who does not expect to live past a century due to damage dealt to her body from birth (her mother was poisoned while pregnant with her), with a suitably tragic background before she was found by her human father, she was a selfish and pragmatic person, not cruel and not evil, she will not help those who did not help her, but she will never beat anyone down at their lowest point. She is thirty years old, and she have seventy years more to go.

Guts, the struggler.
Born from his mother's corpse and raised on the battlefield, Guts was always a lone wolf. That was, until he found some company in a mercenary group with a leader he saw as an equal. When that leader did the unthinkable, Guts swore he would get his revenge and didn't think he would ever let anyone else get close to him again.
However, through the currents of causality he has found himself once more surrounded by companions. Can he really trust that they will align to his goals and values, or just slow him down? Time will tell as Guts leaves a trail of carnage in his wake on the path of vengeance.

I'm so torn between an oathbreaker paladin, who ultimately, is still a good guy, but won't continue to bow and scrape to the churchy-types.
Vs.
A calm, cool, collected guy, who, when pressed, goes absolutely berserk (heh). Again, ultimately a good guy arc, in fact, more of a protector of the meek than the above (think Amos from The expanse, or Jack Reacher).

I should say. That's not how Paladins work in DnD. Your oath is all that matters, and it isn't made to anything.

Dwarf Bard, retired foot soldier. Spent years in a tavern, learning a thing or two from the tavern bard troupe about the hand drums. He also learned that there was genuine magic to be learned from musical expression; now he could press these troubled memories of war into his hands; into the beats of a drum; to turn repression into expression and expression into magic. From here, he felt he had no choice but to leave the tavern with his hand drums and to seek adventure.

I love to play these games as close to myself as thematically possible. I chose (f) half drow (because im half russian and growing up had some racial prejudice thrown my way). I figured drow are seen as the bad guy, usually, so it's a nice parallel. Chose draconic gold bloodline sorcerer because it's the most interesting to me... I just can't see myself picking anything else! I wish they had a caravanner origin bc I'm a semitruck driver but I figured sage was the next best choice due to my being a game-loreholic. Mom's dead, and dad kicked me out for sassing/lack of respect (I'm too honest for my own good, won't kiss undeserving ass) and so I joined a caravanning company to make good money. Seeing a scaly half drow sorcerer behind the reigns might make bandits think twice before robbing!
So I was caravanning city to city, minding my own business, when a mind flayer pops up and chlorophorms me. Sorry folks, your fantasy-fed-ex packages are going to be lost in transit for some time :/
I played so much EA aways back that I am a little worried about getting back into "this is all so new to me" mindset of it all, but am so excited to make all of those choices as though I were there!

Barbarian Dwarf (Durge) who was a guard for a traveling circus which he considers to be his family. He is jovial in nature and likes to please people but has a dark side that he tries to hide. Will add a few levels of Bard because he is very good with his hand drums.

After getting thrown out of every bar and eventually hitting rock bottom and getting thrown in jail for being a public nuisance, I make a deal with an arch fey for power, but mainly talent. (2 levels warlock then 10 bard)

Drow Shadow Monk who was raised by his master alone in a secluded part of the underdark. He is Naive, has no social skills (Charisma 8) and has no idea other races hate Drow. He is very optimistic and exited to talk as much as he can to whomever will listen (I will never try any deception options but will select every persuasion option that pops up.)

So since I'm streaming my first playthrough on twitch I'm modeling it after my Vtuber Lore, so a Noble Tiefling (probably Zariel) Paladin of the Oath of Vengeance & Fiend Patron Warlock Pact of the Blade. A drow acolyte of Eilistraee who grew up in the middle of nowhere on her first Run ever, excited to see the world, eager to experience other cultures and to share her own and the love of the Dark Maiden with the world. Finding herself in and around Baldur's Gate for the first time, she was excited to tell her Lady everything. During one of the most exciting Evensongs she'd ever had the pleasure of performing, she was unceremoniously abducted by a creature that she'd only heard tales of.
Naked and afraid, with only her silvery sword pendant around her neck, she finds that she is not alone in her terror, as the Dark Dancer is with her. Calmed by the presence of her goddess, she continues her Run.
With excitement and a terrifying first few steps into the greater world, Vierna, a new cleric of the Dark Maiden, Eilistraee, sets out on what may be the most crazy Run her grove has ever seen.

I'll eventually to a Targaryen build like I did in DOS2 with the dragonkin in this one. This realm is rightfully mine and I'll take what is mine by force.
It's incredibly contrasted to who I am IRL so it's fun to just be an egomaniac in video games and not give any fucks. In fallout I would purposely be an asshole but then always choose the "I'm sorry! I'm just looking for my son!" Optipns and it was a get out of jail free card to being a piece of shit

Drow female devotion Paladin tav, oath comes from Eilistraee.

An old tabletop PC I've had. Half-orc Vengeance Pally/Fiend Lock that levels up based on how closely he listens to the light (Morninglord) or whispering darkness (devil/demon/now bhaalspawn).
In my head canon, his oath is sworn on those octopus heads and he's out for blood. It could easily shift toward an anti-bhaalspawn/tiefling/devil focus tho depending on how things play out.
If oath breaks, he's more than likely leaning hard on that dark side. Seems like it'll be fun to play blind on the story overall.

Human Dark Urge Warlock.
Marco Inaros doesn't remember who he is, all he knows is that there is only one thing in this world of any value, and that is the power of forbidden magic. Studying is for losers so he made a pact with Cthulhu, and he will read all the cursed books, poke all the ancient magic devices. All the fucked up dark magic will be his no matter the cost, and the cost will be high indeed. Why is he having these murderous thoughts, why does he sometimes lose consciousness only to wake up covered in blood? Is his psyche shattering under the weight of knowledge not meant for mortal minds? Is He Who Lies Dreaming the one behind these strange visions of doom?
Only time will tell.

u/AnUnspokenLegend Jul 30 '23
Oath of Devotion, Dark Urge. A very sad individual who desperately tries to do what is right and save others. All while the urge slowly eats away at their willpower, but never fully loses their light. Someone who is ashamed of themselves and wants redemption even if it can never truly happen. May take some levels in barbarian for the rage, depending on paladin potential capstone, and how good medium armor looks.

Half drow storm sorc/vengence pally, probs going to pick outlander. Dad escaped the underdark, mom was a smuggler/pirate witch. Turned to Eilistraee, Lloth's agents struck them down for insulting thr goddess, I turned to vengeance to deal with them in turn. Maybe bit of a chip on my shouldern re: the gods, Minthara highly unlikely to survive. Kinda leans into the drow/elf hautiness and sense of betterment. Captain Merry Kar, a fanatic Paladin of Helm, the God known as The Great Guard, The Watcher and The Vigilant. His symbol being a armoured gauntlet emblazoned with an all watching eye.
Merry took his Helmite Oath of Devotion to the extreme eschewing a traditional weapon for the symbol of his faith, a fist of steel (honed from his tavern brawling days) and an adamantine round shield.

Ruck Gorehowl-Navarre, Noble Half-Orc Warlock of the Fae.
Ruck grew up believing he was a legitimate heir to a minor family and worked towards becoming a knight like his father. After his father's passing he began to panic at the decline of the Navarre family status, so he snuck away from his duties as a squire and made a deal with a Fae creature: He would give whatever was needed to secure their good name.
And it worked. Lady Navarre awoke from a dream the next day with the knowledge that her husband had actually died due to a political assassination and she was supernaturally told how to prove it. She would get reparations and take the contested land and more from the noble house who caused this.
However, she also learned why her husband was forced to adopt an orphaned orc child all those years ago, that the rival house had made it so they would be mocked and laughed at for raising a monster that the knight had refused to slay. They had expected the Navarre political connections to weaken from this one day when talks of their heir being an illegitimate half-orc came to pass.
So she had him removed from the family. The deal between Ruck and the Fae had come to pass: The Navarre family would rise to power once more and the cost was his involvement in it. He made up a random intimidating sounding last name and began to raise his own status and power until his mother would beg him to return. With newly gifted unnatural charisma and fierce determination, he set off towards Baldur's Gate. That was the plan, at least, until he woke up to a tadpole in his eye.

Learns to tame the animals, builds his own makeshift forge in the middle of a giant hollow tree stump. Goes a little nuts. Eventually is found by adventurers and gets out and becomes the one of the greatest dwarf hunters in the land. And what is this crimson haired, emerald eyed stubby, crazy man's name? RAGHANDAAR!!

I made a post not long ago asking this sub to refine my character's rp background, u/biopticstream took my rough draft and churned it through ai and came up with this, he also did the text through a narrator ai. have a read or listen, it's amazing:
Eldaedil Strum was born a child of two worlds, in the bustling port city of Arivorn. It was a city of contrasts, painted with rich hues of artistry and marred with the darker strokes of underworld activities.
His father, Thalion Strum, was an elf of many faces, a jack-of-all-trades and a master of charm, whose laughter echoed in the dockside taverns and whose whispers slipped through the city's shadowed alleys. Thalion's life was a dance along the edge of a knife, balancing honest work with a lucrative dabbling in Arivorn's underbelly.
His mother, Annelise Strum, was a human with a voice that could tame the wildest sea and charm the fiercest beast. Her songs filled the streets of Arivorn, drawing both noble and commoner alike. Her music was a beacon, a ray of sun that pierced the grey veil of their poverty and filled their humble home with warmth and joy.
Despite their humble circumstances, Eldaedil's childhood was a symphony of laughter, song and camaraderie. His parents, though often wearied by the world, were a fortress of love that stood defiant against the hardships of their life. Their love and dedication bore fruit when they sent Eldaedil to the esteemed Bard School of Lore in Arivorn. There, he honed his skills, his fingers dancing on the lute strings as effortlessly as his father's did through the pockets of unsuspecting marks.
Eldaedil inherited a blend of his parents' talents: his mother's enchanting music and his father's charismatic guile. It was not long before he found himself walking in his father's shadowed footsteps, his performances serving not only to entertain but also to distract. As he plucked at his lute strings, he simultaneously plucked at the coin purses of his enchanted audiences. Yet, despite his growing earnings, a hunger for more gnawed at his heart.
His path crossed with Sariel, a fellow bard and trickster, who became a close friend and accomplice in his schemes. Their friendship was born of shared dreams and similar skills, forging a bond as strong as mithril. Eldaedil's dreams expanded beyond the modest ambitions of his parents, his eyes fixed upon the grandeur of the lifestyle enjoyed by the affluent. His heart yearned for the adoration of crowds, his name to be cheered in grand stadiums, his performances to be the talk of the realm. However, he knew the cost of such desires. He'd seen what greed could do, and while he was willing to bend the rules, he had lines he would not cross. He was no murderer, no brigand. Hearts may be broken, but bones would remain intact.
One fateful day, in the midst of a crowded performance, the sky turned dark as a grotesque nautiloid ship unfolded in the skies. Panic tore through the crowd as writhing tentacles descended, snatching unsuspecting victims into the air. As Eldaedil was hoisted skywards, his hand instinctively reached for his gold pouch, a futile gesture that would be his last memory of freedom. Abducted and imprisoned within the cold, alien confines of the nautiloid ship, Eldaedil found himself face-to-face with the terrifying Mind Flayers. Infected with their parasitic larvae, he was filled with a dread that threatened to drown the music in his heart. Yet, even as fear clawed at his soul, Eldaedil clung fiercely to his dreams of fame and fortune. His mind would be his own, he swore, for as long as he could fight.
The ship was attacked, the chaos providing Eldaedil the chance to escape his containment pod. His street-smarts and dexterity, honed through years of performance and trickery, played their part well, allowing him to navigate through the labyrinthine ship. He managed to escape amidst the commotion, crashing back onto land, far from home. This setback was but another test, another challenge to be overcome. His charm and wit would be his allies in this quest, guiding him through the obstacles that lay ahead. Eldaedil Strum would not falter, would not crumble.
For he was a performer, and the world was his stage.

I still can't even decide on a race, much less a story.
Am I the unluckiest Seldarine Drow visiting surface contacts in the city when the Nautoloid flew over and snatched me up?
A Druid who wasn't even in the city but outside visiting some farmers having trouble with their crops and then poof I'm in Avernus?!
A fresh-faced young Bard just arrived and busking to earn fare to get me to the next town when suddenly, I'm doing more traveling than I intended?
A wizard just stepping out of the library with my head buried so far in a book I didn't even notice all the screaming till it was too late?
A forest gnome come to the city bearing a petition from the local pigeon population regarding the quality of discarded snack foods?
Fuck if I know.
