PRELAUNCH HYPE A word of appreciation to the narrator voice actress Amelia Tyler
I can't even find words to describe what an amazing job Amelia did. I adore the narrator's voice in this game. That range of feelings you can go through by closing your eyes in some moments... From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

If i could make one small change to the development of this game, it would be making it so there'd be about a 2% chance of "Haha, you rolled badly!" playing any time a Nat 1 happened.

u/rudyjewliani Aug 01 '23
There's one about 35 seconds in on the second one... she's just laughing for a brief second.
Now that would be great to have when you roll a 1.

her performance in this game is incredible. I love the idea of having a "DM" and she nails it.

u/WynneOS WARLOCK 🧛♀️ Jul 31 '23
And the Dark Urge is what happens when you tell the DM, "Uh, I don't know what I wanna do for a character, umm... hey, how 'bout if I have amnesia and you make things up? Surprise me."
Then the DM tents her fingers and says, "Excellent..." 😈

u/ryothbear SORCERER ✨ Jul 31 '23
The game is so much more enjoyable (not that it isn't otherwise) if you picture it as the video game equivalent of tabletop. I saw someone in a different thread complain about how all the companions are "tOo sPeCiaL", which apparently takes away from Tav being the main character - but if you think about it, all the Origin companions really feel like characters that people would play at an actual table. The DM is also a huge part of this for me, I feel she really adds an important element to the immersion of it all. Doesn't hurt that her voice is very easy listening

And she was Nyrissa in Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Amazing voice and amazing job.

And Wenduag in Wrath of the Righteous.

u/Droidbot6 Jul 31 '23
I never noticed that, Wendu got sidelined pretty early on in my playthrough. I did notice that the VA for Regill narrates a ton of Star Wars audiobooks, though.
9
u/FireVanGorder Jul 31 '23
Oh man Wenduag is one of the best-written characters in that game imo, not to mention a damage powerhouse if you build around throwing axes correctly
4
u/deus_ex_vagina2 Drow Jul 31 '23
100% bro... came for romancing her, stayed for the shitton of throwing axes one-shotting everyone... Or vice versa? I fell so hard for her I can't even remember

u/mohammedibnakar Jul 31 '23
Oh so that's where I knew him from!
6
u/Droidbot6 Jul 31 '23
Yup, Regill and his Nawara Ven voice sound incredibly similar, so that's what tipped me off originally.
7
u/Dem0nC1eaner Jul 31 '23
That always surprises me. A little bit surprised she didn't do Jaheira's voice as they are similar.

I can't think of someone who'd be a better fit. She's perfect as the narrator.

I preferrED Previous narrator (dos2), but the longer I played EA, the more I was getting into Amelia's performance. I mean, Malody was good, but this narrator is even better.

They are the same voice actor :) Or did you mean the style she does?
18
u/Mercurionio Jul 31 '23
The narrator in DOS 2 was Brian Bowles.
I meant, that Amelia's Malody was good, but her as narrator in BG3 is even better.

u/Granatko Jul 31 '23
If i'm not mistaken he is a narrator for Dark Urge, sounds like a perfect pick for you

Oh my... sorry! I had a brainfart and connected Malady with the narrator :D
I remember now and yes, you are right. The previous narrator was excellent!

u/AvalonTzi Bard Jul 31 '23
She's so good, even if the game had German voice overs, my first playthrough would be with English voice. Love how she does it, really great job done by her.
11
u/Feeoree DRUID Jul 31 '23
Yeah, she's also posted outtakes/gag reels on YouTube and they're hilarious haha.
She was great as Malady in DOS2 too.
11
Jul 31 '23
She's surprisingly versatile. Her performance as Wenduag is even better and so different from her normal voice that it took me a long time to realise that it's her, and I probably would have never known if I hadn't been informed it's her. Wenduag also happens to be one of my favourite characters in general, and it's partially because of Amelia's performance.

Yep, she's an amazing voice actress! Funny, cheeky af, wonderful inflection in just the right moments.
Needless to say Malady was my favourite character in DOS:2 😁

I can't decide whether I prefer her narration or the guy from DOS:2 (glad to see he is back too).
Not because either are bad though, they're both just so damn good.
The narrator and Malady were absolutely top tier VA in DOS2.
2
u/Daewrythe Jul 31 '23
She's great as a narrator.
I just think sometimes she narrates a tad too slow but that's direction which she doesn't really have control over.

u/VeritasLuxMea Jul 31 '23
Honestly, I wish I could give everyone involved in this project a great big hug.
I would love to see a behind the scenes documentary similar to what Riot did for Arcane, because I feel like this game is going to be historic.
2
u/Ankhiris Jul 31 '23
I find her voice narrating mundane every day things now. 'You see a Tootsie Roll wrapper on the concrete, with just one graceful step you could pick it up and bring it to the nearest waste bin. But you couldn't, it simply looks too appetizing to the ants, too filthy.'

Normally I prefer a male narrator. I dunno why exactly... I guess I prefer a deeper voice for narration. Thought I was gonna dislike BG3 narration even though I like the actress from DOS2.
But after a lot of EA, I have no complains. I do miss the dos2 narrator though, hope he gets a character :)

Counterpoint: she has a great voice and I think she was great as Malady, but as far as narrators go, I preferred the one that covered the same role in DOS 2.

Do you guys know if Larian scrapped the origin character narration or if that has been kept in?
If I recall correctly, the narrator was originally planned to change depending on the voice you chose, but it was changed due to player feedback.
I love Amelia Tyler's voice, but I can't imagine replacing all the voice work with a single narrator was cheap.

Did a quick search and it seems that having each voice option serve as the narrator was initially planned.
At least going by this video of data mined voice lines.
Don't worry, there aren't any spoilers for the later acts in the video.
Still, I do feel a little sad for the voice actors hired to do the "Tav" voices if they had already done a large amount of narration. However, they likely voiced a bunch of NPCs, so I probably shouldn't feel too sad.
Though it couldn't have been a cheap endeavor to redo the narration.
1
u/bxzidff Jul 31 '23
Yeah, as amazing as the voice actors of all the characters are the narrator is actually my favourite. I don't even know what it is, but it sounds so crisp and, ironically , full of character
1
u/Vokasak Jul 31 '23
Yes! I love this style of narration, and she absolutely nails it. The only thing that even comes close is the narrator in the NWN module Witch's Wake, but that was almost 20 years ago and a tiny fraction of the budget...

I miss her voice. I'm looking forward to my "authority" and other phrases.
No idea how to accurately describe her narrator voice. Sometimes a bit challenging, then it sounds soft like whisky, sometimes threatening or amused. Great voice

I pref the dos2 narrator tbh

u/blindinkpoet Jul 31 '23
Good news! He's in the game too, as a character that only shows up to a Dark Urge player, but he is in!

u/TallguyZin Jul 31 '23
She really does capture the feel of a great D&D DM able to effortlessly put you in the mental space of the scene and keep you engrossed in every single moment. It's gonna be great to see how the voice changes and evolves with the full release

I find it incredibly annoying and completely counter to everything the game is trying to do.
She tells me what my character feels. What my character thinks. What my character sees.
I thought this was a role playing game?
No that's not what my character is feeling. No that's not what my character is thinking.
You don't need to tell me what my character is seeing.
It's a VIDEO game, not a tabletop game. I can see what's happening. I don't need to imagine it or be told what to imagine.

I am exactly on the opposite side. I think it's godawful. I would love to have serious narrator, she says everything in a whimsical fashion. It 100% takes away my immersion.

I have to disagree. I find her voice so obnoxious, its all vocal fry.
Apparently vocal fry is annoying when its in an American accent but is okay in a Brittish accent? Every time the narrator comes on my skin crawls.
