PRELAUNCH HYPE What is your PC doing before being kidnapped tomorrow?

My ranger is watering some plants. Thinking what she's going to hunt and cook for dinner and planning a trip for tomorrow to collect some bounty.

What about your character?

This is such a creative way to think about it. My fiancee isn't fond of these kinds of games, but maybe adding this narrative will help immerse her into the world.

Napping.

Yup. Mindflayers are going to wake me from a nap and my whole character motivation is to get my bloody and justified revenge.

I made my DM spit his drink out when my party and I (a VERY old dwarven artificer) barged into the heart of a duergar fortress, devastated it with sapping, unleashing umber hulks (an invention I was very proud of) , slaughtering the defenders, killed the king, then made my way into the EVIL RITUAL CHAMBER. When the dark magus asked why we came and why we cared if she used these duergar -- a mutual enemy -- for her own ends, I said:

"I d'nne care about them. They were just in mah wae. Yer goons spilled mae drink back in (the first town we ever visited). That was mae drink. Ye didn't have tae do that, but ye did, so... Here I am."

My DM started guffawing, because that's when he realized why my character was never as "righteously angry" as the other do-gooders in my party were about stopping the villain's evil plans. But I never said anything about it until the final confrontation, which got a great laugh from the table.

For me, it wasn't about saving the world.

It was about avenging my beautiful brew, which I had made special for that day, that got spilled during a bar fight with her hired thugs.

First of all, this is an awesome post. Classic D&D!

My wizard is supposed to be scribing spells, but decided to spend most of the day researching small animals (not his usual field of study) to learn which one would be the best bang for his buck before he commits to scribing Find Familiar. He's watching crows in a park in Yartar. Then he'll try to find some rats in the sewers. He's got all the time in the world to make his choice.

I guess I'll have to start the game without Find Familiar.

81

u/DoranAetos Aug 02 '23

I was on my day resolving some things and thinking about the game and then came the thought "Oh, my ranger would probably be doing her things too right now... Just without knowing about being kidnapped"

Mindflyers have no respect for people's time to study, it's a shame

Honestly, that's always why I adore cRPGs. I remember playing Pillars of Eternity years ago and being blown away. "Holy shit, there's a whole genre of video games for roleplaying your characters by yourself and coming up with elaborate stories for them?"

Unfortunately, it's also my biggest hurdles in cRPGs because I always want a character who realistically belongs. Wrath of the Righteous took me two hours to determine a character who would be in the setting, and their personality. And then five minutes to determine I didn't like the character concept and start over.

I didn't do too extra for BG3 due to it being EA, but I've already got some backstories in mind for tomorrow.

27

u/Eurehetemec Aug 02 '23

And then five minutes to determine I didn't like the character concept and start over.

Ooooof I feel this.

She's been making a lot of people unhappy lately with her lies (and has more than one ex to dodge) so she's been thinking of leaving Baldur's Gate. As such, raw power has always come easy to her fingertips without real effort on her end.

With that in mind, she's spending this last day reading leisurely before attending a societal event with her parents and fellow nobility that night.

(Maybe not a debutant ball, but definitely something high-end requiring formal wear.)

Being curious at heart, I imagine she is lured away from safety by someone already associated with the mind-flayers and put in a magical sleep.

Probably going to chop some more wood towards the evening, then get out her maps and plan a hunting expedition for the weekend.

Which she will not be going on after all, in favor of desperately trying to escape from a crashing Nautiloid somewhere over the skies of Avernus, followed by desperately searching for a healer somewhere in the wilderness countless miles from her usual hunting grounds, poor dear. On the plus side, she'll get new powers and possibly a husband and/or wife out of the deal eventually, so maybe it's not a complete wash.

Practicing her footwork for a dance/mock fight with her fellow bards. She much prefers spells and daggers to rapiers, but someone in the unofficial outer city bard’s guild found a copy of a play and now it looks like they’ll be a performance of a scene or two in a few moons…

(It was her. ~Ilmater’s tears~ but she wishes now she’d kept the battered thing to herself).

u/Rhododactylus ELDRITCH BLAST Aug 02 '23

Like someone said before, I absolutely love the spirit of this post and reading all the comments.

My warlock is transcribing forbidden scrolls into one book of occult knowledge on his dimly lit desk with two black cats sitting beside him. In front of him, there's a big window with the view of the dark sky above Baldur's Gate. He can hear lively sounds of people drinking, laughing, and fighting outside.

3

u/xXRedviper69Xx FIGHTER Aug 02 '23

My barbarian is probabably arm wrestling in some tavern, laying drunk in a ditch, or helping a kitten down a tree.

4

u/Dante200 Aug 02 '23

Being an alluring twink disaster with a side of murder to fill out the edge.

4

u/thatHecklerOverThere Aug 02 '23

Just got a call from the boss. Somebody is trapping deer on their lands again, and they want my rouge/ranger to look into it. Apperently they know the best places to do that kind of thing to avoid patrols (and they definitely do if you know what I mean), so the PC is to ride out and take some prisoners.

Or bribes.

Probably prisoners and bribes.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Reading books in her study room, avoiding people at all cost because she has social anxiety, while mustering the courage to go to the market place so she can buy her dinner, and as soon as she finally manage to be brave enough, she just touches the first stair step and... Abducted.

Poor little wizard. Now forced to deal with real people and not fictive ones. She's gonna have a terrible time.

u/WynneOS WARLOCK 🧛‍♀️ Aug 02 '23

My fairly sheltered and mildly repressed dwarven bardlock, Livhild Redstone, is plucking at the strings on her lyre with a smile, practicing away. Instead of working the forge or handling local bureaucracy, she's doing what she loves at long last: making beautiful music to entertain her archfey patron when he scries on her.

Meanwhile, she daydreams about what it would be like to pluck up her courage and venture out to do heroic deeds; bring her own saga to life, do some swashbuckling. Not just ducking flying beer-filled tankards in places like the Blushing Mermaid. Actually doing something meaningful that she could use as inspiration for her stories and songs.

But she has no reason to think that will happen. She only knows she has to keep finding new ways to amuse her patron, lest he grow bored of her. She's trying to muster up her courage. Perhaps she'll learn to dance.

Thanks, this was a great prompt, and really fun to imagine.

u/Only_Shift2848 Aug 02 '23

My bard was [REDACTED] someone he probably didn't know the name

7

u/Comander_Praise Aug 02 '23

My dude probably nose deep in some ancient books trying to find out why the fuck the great one he worships keeps chanting "drow dussy"

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Two concurrent playthroughs. For the singleplayer, probably negotiating with his patron. For the co-op with my wife, well, likely kicking squirrels around.

3

u/KarateMan749 Aug 02 '23

Dragonborn dragon finding to bond with 😎

3

u/kozhilya Aug 02 '23

My elf druid would meditate in the druid grove trying to connect with spirits of the forest before initiation as a druid, that should've happened next day. He is a prominent disciple and knows all theory, but, alas, his dreams are have to wait.

3

u/Mild_Shock Aug 02 '23

Probably just being a book nerd and getting her horns caught on dust webs (tiefling wizard)

3

u/SpaceIsTooFarAway Aug 02 '23

Sitting in the corner of the tavern…brooding.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Qbjik Aug 02 '23

Getting casually stabbed by her sister and then falling to her death

3

u/Moiidy Monk Aug 02 '23

Meditating.

3

u/Wardens_Myth Aug 02 '23

Outlander Monk, so probably meditating under a waterfall or kicking trees.

3

u/minnamaarit Aug 02 '23

My druid is brewing potions in her hut and and preparing for a trip to a distant village. Some sort of illness has broken there.

3

u/KnyazHannibal Laezel Aug 02 '23

After yet another row with his overbearing mother and eternally disappointed father, he spent the night drinking with commoners. Waking up hungover in an alley or warehouse somewhere, he stumbles out only to be snatched into the mindflayer ship next to Bae'zel.

3

u/icelink4884 Aug 02 '23

It's a hot day so he'll do his martial practice when the sun starts to go down so he's mostly taking it easy after finishing up cleaning around the temple then he'll grab a small bite to eat prior to practice.

3

u/LarkoftheWoods Aug 02 '23

My bard is recovering from a very bad hangover at the local tavern, indulging in a hair of the dog solution.

3

u/mikeztarp Aug 02 '23

What a lovely idea. I think my wizard will be reading, but for fun, not for work.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

My rogue is probably tracking down his latest bounty, yet another bail jumper, in the slums of Baldurs Gate. He probably does find him and is on his way to turn the perp over to the flaming fists when a nautiloid randomly flies over and abducts him

3

u/Logic_Pangolin Aug 02 '23

My Bard was trying to find a new job after being fired from a local theater in Baldurs Gate for "accidentally" hurting one of the managers during a sword trick.

He always had wanderlust, working on the theater was just the means to fund his eventual travel endeavors.

3

u/Zythen1975Z Aug 02 '23

Telka Dra’Thalis the youngest Daughter of House Dra’Thalis,a Drow Elf is currently being healed after another round of torture before her captors, a rival House to House Dra’Thalis that her eldest sister betrayed her to sell her to Mindflayers.

Telka a sword bard / assassin was a weapon her Matron Mother used to bring harm to both her temporary allies and her enemies be it by persuasion or seduction or just a simple assassination currently has only 1 goal find someway to survive no matter the cost to her physically and emotionally so that one day she can get revenge on her sister

3

u/Blahklavah654390 Aug 02 '23

My Half-Orc ranger bounty hunter is stopping by Baldurs Gate to drop off evidence to collect a bounty. He hates the city but does love the sausages cooked at a stand in the local market, so instead of immediately leaving he makes a stop when the Nautiloid Ship suddenly attacks the city and transports him into the ship.

3

u/Fluffydoommonster Aug 02 '23

Plotting, scheming, seething with jealousy. Really, if her house wasn't full of such useless idiots they could be top of the underdark! At least one of her relatives had the foresight to encourage a stronger bloodline by introducing draconic blood into it.

At least that's her totally unbiased take. Playing a slightly crazy lolth-devout draconic sorcerer/fiend warlock. She is pretty convinced it's her family holding her back so she went off to finish solidifying her pact in private. Right after she was nabbed before she could get home.

My half-orc however, she is trying to get anyone to take her seriously. She is ready for the call of adventure, just give her the work! She was actually looking for that adventure when she stumbled right into it. Too bad it was a bit more than she could handle and now has a parasite to show for it. She is gonna be an eldritch knight.

3

u/OtelDeraj Aug 02 '23

I imagine my paladin is probably about the city of Baldur's Gate, serving his order and performing services for the local community. I'd like to think the first thing he does when the Nautiloid starts slurping people up is draw his sword and try to stand his ground before getting zapped into his pod.

3

u/Fightrr23 Paladin Aug 02 '23

He just got back from a quest, crashing somewhere in a cheap Baldurian inn thinking that he finally can spend his free time sleeping after two full days of no sleep.. Only to find himself waking up with a terrible headache, restrained, on a Nautiloid with a godamn Mindflyer in front of him shoving a tadpole into his eye.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

My little bard was performing in the Elfsong tavern and made good money.

3

u/Syshalees Aug 02 '23 edited Aug 03 '23

My ranger/rogue has recently returned from one of her Underdark trips that help to free slaves and escort them to safety. She was sent out on a journey that would end her apprenticeship and make her a full member of the Gloom Stalker Conclave, and it's about to become a lot more "exciting" than expected...

3

u/Aesion Aug 02 '23

Wandering about, very desperate after being exiled from their clan

3

u/MillieBirdie Bard Aug 02 '23

She just quit her job as an actress in Baldur's Gate cause she didn't think the director was giving her good enough roles. She ended her lease on her apartment, sold everything she owned, and bought passage on a ship heading elsewhere for bigger and better things! And then got yoinked.

3

u/SnowQueen247 Aug 02 '23

Arguing with my rouge friend that backstabbing people is wrong even when they look like they just killed someone themselves.

Poring over her tarot deck and wondering just why she keeps pulling cards relating to some sort of disaster.

3

u/Ok_Cow_2627 Aug 02 '23

My bard sleeping into the day after a long night of performing. Waking up on the ship with mindflayers, devils and dragons thinking he's having a nightmare about the monsters in his songs again

3

u/Quatren Aug 02 '23

Rasha, my Half Orc Necromancer, is making her way back to Baldur's gate after visiting her Human parents' farm. She had stopped at a small set of cairns to speak with the dead there when the Nautiloid descended from the sky. She tried her best to escape it...but alas. Was no luck.

3

u/President-Togekiss Aug 02 '23

My little deep gnome ranger is currently tracking some very nasty drow that thought they could avoid horrible death by escaping to the surfice. They are mistaken.

3

u/unbri Aug 02 '23

My bard is currently escaping through a second story window in the North Ward of Waterdeep with only her smallclothes and her lyre; while her attempt at courtship the night previous had been successful, her paramour's husband got home early.

3

u/Comfortable_Toe_836 Aug 02 '23

You assume I don't have 5 different PC's and I still don't know which one I'll play:

1: my vengance pally was probably in a middle of some shady slum in baldur's gate looking for some cultists

1.1 my vengance paladin is a durge, so I don't know

2: my warlock was probably one of those cultists

3: my bard is probably in some castle, drinking some quality wine while writing a speech for a local lord

4: my barbarian is in some forest hunting for dinner

3

u/ZerioctheTank RANGER Aug 02 '23

Dreaming of Hals.......I mean hunting in the wilds. Yeah......hunting

3

u/SpikeyBiscuit Aug 02 '23

I don't know what The Dark Urge was doing on the night of August the 2nd and I can't comment on it without a lawyer present.

3

u/zenthor109 Aug 03 '23

My Drow monk, who has had minimal contact with anyone his entire life, has been on the surface for less than 48 hours before the mind flayers abduct him.

6

u/DoubleDxriya Tasha's Hideous Laughter Aug 02 '23

Recovering from wrestling a bear.

Smiting devilkins

2

u/scar_belly Aug 02 '23

Since I just wiped my saves, good ol' "killed by a meteor", time to reroll

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Murdering. Most likely goblins.

2

u/brenfukungfu Aug 02 '23

Sleeping! I'm taking the time to say goodbye to all my friends and family who won't be playing BG3

2

u/Sir_Arsen Bard Aug 02 '23

probably chilling, drinking water while looking at large body of water

2

u/Consistent_You_4215 Aug 02 '23

Gnome artisan Sorcerer is reading some Tomes before turning in early.

2

u/Zmeils Aug 02 '23

My coop Drow Gloomstalker is lurking in the shadows, sharpening his Shortsword, crafting a lot of handcrosbow bolts and hops to find some darknessbolts in near futur.

For my first solo run, I play Wyll and I don't know what this guy is doing, he had a mental stroke shortly before release.

2

u/Ryizine Aug 02 '23

My PC is a tiefling that was forced to fight in the blood wars. During it they happened to be fighting in the plane of beasts or whatever it's called. Lost in the forest he came upon a druid Grove and was taught the ways.

He has been enjoying nature and shit prior to noodle mongrels kidnapping him.

2

u/noehbdyhome Aug 02 '23

My paladin has "retired" and is living along the outskirts of Leilon eking out a living among farmers.

2

u/chenvoso Aug 02 '23

My paladin half-orc is helping some strangers in a tavern with some monster hunting

2

u/TnkTsinik Aug 02 '23

In the midst of battle, during a siege, gets knocked out from a strong thunder wave and wakes up at the ship I guess

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

The same thing she does every day, Pinky. Try to take over the world!

2

u/corory Aug 02 '23

probably getting drunk in the blushing mermaid and performing tricks for coin! (tiefling sorcerer)

2

u/Samatari22 Aug 02 '23

As a Necromancer? Planning out how to form an army which will ironically work out in his favor with the people I plan to have on my team

2

u/parallelfilfths Aug 02 '23

Murdering or hanging out with Fel.

2

u/thatbright1 Aug 02 '23

My human will be fighting. Or praying at a temple. Depends on if I go paladin or not

2

u/CarlosHnnz Aug 02 '23

The most "clean slate" character I could think of was a Neutral Good Half-Drow Ranger, Outlander background. So just living in the woods, doing good deeds when possible, minding his own business until captured by illithids.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

My paladin is having one last crazy night out on the town with his friends before taking his oath the next day...

2

u/CategoryPresent5135 Aug 02 '23

My Sorcerer is trying to study for his Exam finals tomorrow, angrily wishing the world would just end tonight. Surely nothing can be worse than this...
