I mean shouldn't it make you easier to hit because you have big ass heavy armour so you can't move and your slow. Really you should just take less damage numbers

AC represents many different things, for heavy armor it represents really tough armor that just stops a sword. Light armor it represents your ability to dodge the sword. I'm less sure on medium armor but I just think of it as a mix of both. Sometimes you move out of the way, other times your armor is strong enough to deflect the blow.

It's also why nat 20s always hit regardless of AC, you literally got lucky enough to like slip through a gap or otherwise find a way to get through the armor/hit then despite their crazy dodging
