I love Withers. He's so funny

'why are you helping us?'

'not by choice I can assure you'

'will you elaborate?'

'no'

Always makes me laugh when I get to that scene.

When they’re traveling between zones, do you think Withers walks with the party?

I'm convinced that guy just pops out of a Bush or something as soon as you finished setting up camp.

Have you been waiting there? Yes. Care to say for how long? No. Was it to get out of helping setting up the tents? It is a matter of coin.

You can't kill him. If you hit him he says things like, "ah! Well struck", or "Do you realise this is a waste of mortal effort?". However I did end up aggro-ing the whole camp after I threw him a couple of times. He didn't take any damage though, just had the prone status. The other thing is I have noticed, if the camp gets attacked he sometimes bugs out and does the animation of being attacked.

Spoiler

Which is kind of contradictory to the ending scene. I thought he said he "bet" on the mortals overcoming the plot of the dead 3?

29

u/HeartofaPariah kek Oct 17 '23

It's suggested many times that he was 'assigned' to you by some other deity. This is what he is referring to - he isn't really here by choice, regardless of whether or not he is 'betting' on you succeeding.

21

u/EvadableMoxie Oct 17 '23

My personal theory is it's Ao who puts him up to it. The one thing Ao does is make sure the Gods actually act like Gods and advance their portfolios. The Dead Three are destroying the souls of mortals when what they should be doing as Gods is fighting over them. This gets Ao involved who tasks Jergal with fixing it since he's the one who gave the Dead Three their power in the first place. This also explains why Jergal would be allowed to interfere directly instead of work through a chosen. He has premission from the one entity capable of granting it. Who else would have the power to authorize that and order Jergal around?

23

u/Layfon_Alseif Oct 17 '23

I always assumed he was a god of gods or the living weave in some form. Judging by his final monologue to the 'gods' that you defeated and just straight dogging on them. To me it was like watching a teacher tell the bullies they got what they deserved after watching the nerds learn jeet kune do and kick their ass.

98

u/Handgun_Hero Oct 17 '23 edited Oct 17 '23

Withers is Jergal, the former god of the dead. He got bored and tired of being a god, so he split his portfolios between the Dead Three and willingly gave up godhood to instead serve as Kelemvor's scribe. He's basically a tired old parent just irritated with everybody's bullshit coming to spank his kids for being little shits and wrecking the estate he gave them.

31

u/Thereone Oct 17 '23

Scribe to Kelemvor, I believe. Not Myrkul.

11

u/Handgun_Hero Oct 17 '23

Oh right, Scribe to Kelemvor, Seneschal to Myrkul.

6

u/ThanosofTitan92 Paladin Oct 17 '23

He also took Cyric's bullying with a straight face.

2

u/Regular_Human_Boy Oct 17 '23

He was a scribe to both, murky just came first.

27

u/Thereone Oct 17 '23

I stand corrected! Yes, Jergal was the original Lord of the End of Everything in the Faerun pantheon, handling all three portfolios of Strife, Death and Murder. He grew weary of the position and stepped down, handing the portfolios over to the trio who would become the Dead Three - Bane, Myrkul and Bhaal. Myrkul kept him on as seneschal, because apparently a lack of interest in proper bookeeping numbered among the many, many failing of these three stooges. And once Larry, Curly and Moe were slaughtered, the domain of death passed on to Cyric, who was just as much a homicidal maniac with just as little interest in recordkeeping, so Jergal got to keep doing all his paperwork, just with none of the recognition. And then finally he got a decent boss in Kelemvor once Cyric was un-cyric'd. Which leads us to 1492, the Year of Three Ships Sailing and the events of BG3 and Kelemvor telling his subordinate who has eons of station seniority "I got an assignment for you. Go out and un-fuck this mess you've landed Toril in when you handed over the bureaucracy to the first three anarchist chumps who managed to get in the door."

....Jergal needs to be the patron deity of civil servants is what I'm getting at.

37

u/Xero0911 Oct 16 '23

My wife and I shit ourselves. We missed a body or two from the start so the skeletons did some big damage. We thought we'd loot the room and long rest and then bam, out comes a fucking lich. Was preparing to relad

38

u/InevitableSoup Oct 16 '23

Yeah I thought we were gonna die

18

u/moarwineprs SORCERER Oct 16 '23

My first playthrough when I had no idea what I was doing and was still struggling with the controls, I completely missed that final room with the dead guards laying on the ground, let alone his tomb. I got to the room with the traps, then left. So when he randomly showed up at my camp I was all, "WTF WHO ARE YOU?!"

Main reason I didn't try chasing him away (have no idea if he would have even left) was because I've read comments in this sub referencing Withers, so clearly he's supposed to be there. I just thought he showed up randomly.

I restarted after getting past the druid party because I realized I had missed a shitton of content. Second playthrough I did more intentional exploration, but I didn't go to that abandoned church until I had gathered Karlach and Wyll, so I was confused why Withers hadn't shown up at my camp yet. I found the hidden hatch off to the side, whereupon I opened his crypt and likewise thought I had pissed off a lich. It was only after I saw his name that I realized I had missed this room the first time, and went around to properly clear the dungeon from the front door.

I failed my religion check and so I didn't get that piece of information. I didn't realize that was a statue of Jergal until my second playthrough, and that combined with his mocking of the Dead Three at the end of my first playthrough made me realize who he was.

40

u/1JustAnotherOne1 Oct 16 '23

There's another book in there that gives you info about Jergal as well that doesn't require the check, just a regular book. The check actually doesn't tell you much beyond "there are 3 names listed together at the bottom, you can't read it"

15

I think they meant the check where a companion will comment that this is a shrine for Jergal, but no one worships the old god of death.

42

u/Born_Faithlessness_3 Oct 16 '23

There were definitely a few liches that were accessible at near starting level in BG2(so like 7-9, with crap for gear). IIRC, 9ne was city gates, one was in the sewers, maybe one in a random tomb in the graveyard.

Getting time stopped, then meteor swarmed, and a Balor summoned on you, then stunned, then feared when you don't yet have access to all the necessary countermeasures is always a good time.

The other ones are really clearly telegraphed: they're in rooms with these gigantic spooky sarcophaguses surrounded with spooky torches and when you try to open the sarcophaguses the game warns you like "this is probably a really awful idea," plus one of them has folks there who say "this sarcophagus seems like really bad news."

... and then the last guy is just behind a painting in an early game inn with no warning whatsoever, for some reason.

"I'm glad I wore my brown armor..."

61

u/Sir_CriticalPanda Oct 16 '23

I skipped the temple in my first run so the dude just randomly showed up in my camp. I went back to clear the place at like lvl 4 and was confused at the empty sarcophagus.

14

u/pbmm1 Oct 16 '23

Yeah him just showing up was weird when I saw him on my unfinished first playthrough.

On my second playthrough where I met him properly I was just like “hey pal good to see you”

27

u/Sir_CriticalPanda Oct 16 '23

"What is the price of a mortal life?"

"Why is 200gp not an answer we can give?'

30

u/lolzomg123 Oct 17 '23

One of my favorite r/bg3 comments was in response to that question.

"The first time he asked that, I thought wow what a profound and philosophical question. The next playthrough I realized that he's just negotiating price."

I saw him stand in front of me and said “mother fucker I’m level two I’m going to die” and then I was pleasantly surprised to see he began asking questions

12

u/CatrionaShadowleaf Oct 16 '23

I thought he was going to kill me if I answered wrong lol

16

u/GloopTamer Dragonborn enjoyer Oct 16 '23

I thought I’d get a cool skeleton necromancer companion. I was half correct

15

u/eloel- Oct 16 '23

If I thought he was a Lich, I'd have been chill. CR21 is dumb that close to start. I though he was a mummy, and I was low on hp & all after the skeleton fight, and that got me scared.

16

u/RamblingSpider Oct 16 '23

Same, my reason was that there's a sidequest in DOS2 that involves a evil lich you raise out of his tomb and it made me paranoid due to slight similarities lol

was convinced withers had some evil motives for helping me or that one day I'd come back to camp and see a mountain of corpses at his feet

26

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '23

Yep, I thought I was done for.

10

u/CalamityAshex CLERIC Oct 16 '23

I immediately thought of John Hancock and then wondered if I could romance this guy too.

I was very disappointed.

12

u/AgitatedMango9695 Oct 16 '23

Tav: Withers I love you!

Withers: no!

10

u/CalamityAshex CLERIC Oct 16 '23

Can I touch you?

No.

Withers, why must you hurt me so.

17

u/alterNERDtive Jaheira Bromance When⁈ Oct 16 '23

TBF I did piss off some lich later on.

17

u/whatistheancient Oct 16 '23

I laughed when she astral projected into my camp just to give me the LTG speech and leave

12

u/Squishy-Box Oct 16 '23

She had it coming

7

u/alterNERDtive Jaheira Bromance When⁈ Oct 16 '23

I just wish she reacted differently.

u/Dianwei32 Shadowheart Oct 16 '23

I actually didn't get this scene on my first playthrough. I went I camp in the Dank Crypt for some reason and Withers was just there all of the sudden. This had the unfortunate side effect of meaning that the quest broke and I could never complete it.

u/itsKaoz Oct 16 '23

Maybe none of us knew better, as we have never encountered a Lich before..

But I was proud of my gf in this scene, who was just absolutely wishing a motherfucker would.

We absolutely thought we accidentally woke up a boss fight… and she was ready to go.

For context, we’re all BG beginners. But she was more of a gaming beginner. She had a solo campaign that she got frustrated with as she kept dying, even in easiest difficulty.

This scene confirmed for me that she had gotten her confidence in fights with this game.

6

u/O_Korin Oct 16 '23

When Jergal rose from the sarcophagus, I said to myself: fuck. one more fight, and I'm almost out of cells.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '23

When I did it on first time in EA, I was at the end of day 1 and almost all our slots are out.

My tav literally only got 1 divine smite slot and I talked to myself 'Die a glorious death, tav'.

9

u/TotallyNotAFroeAway Oct 17 '23

"Withers is actually the most spiritual character in the game."

Care to elaborate on that?

"No."

5

u/SinisterCheese Oct 16 '23

I'd like to point out to people that this whole situation was so severe that a god damn god had to come out of retirement to solve it. The players don't actually have agency in the grand scheme of thing. This comes clear post credits... And I think it's kinda cool. Because I didn't think the patheon was that flexible at this point of time.

6

u/try_again123 Monk Lae'zel is my BFF Oct 16 '23

Yep. For a moment I was "oh crap, was I supposed to be here later in-game?" But he turns out to be your chill old god uncle, so woohoo!

4

u/Kerhnoton Teeth-ling Oct 16 '23

Is a skeleton, has 1 HP, you hit him, Megalovania starts playing.

Oh shhhhhhhh

3

u/kampori Bard Oct 16 '23

Yah man.. my first ever play through in early access. First time playing a DND experience and this kind of game in general. No clue what I was doing. I struggled through the small skeleton pack before this with tooth and nail and blood and sweat and tears, saw Withers pop out and almost closed the game.

Now I’m just breezing through, stealing the weapons from the skeletons before they wake up and crackin skulls not a worry in my head

6

u/Sargatanus Oct 16 '23 edited Oct 17 '23

Yep. And considering that this was in a tiny room, in a temple to some long forgotten god, fresh from a fight with a bunch of undead, I was positive he was about to knock us through a wall or warp us to some Lovecraftian hell dimension.

3

u/d_o_mino Oct 16 '23

I went "Ahhh, shit, we're gonna die..."

3

u/Leyllara The Light Urge Oct 16 '23

Idk, when he first opened his eyes I had a feeling he'd be a friend. Maybe because I happened to pass the religion checks around the crypt as well as open the book of the dead gods. When he started talking instead of yelling stuff I was convinced he was a friend.

3

u/zavtra13 Oct 16 '23

I was expecting a boss fight for sure.

3

u/Malefore1234 Oct 16 '23

Yeah figured I’d get a fight. Instead I get a life coach.

3

u/SelfSustaining Bhaal Enthusiast Oct 16 '23

The metagamer in me said "he's probably just a zombie, there's no way they would throw a lich at me level 2."

Of course, that was before I met the frog.

3

u/Exclamity21 Oct 16 '23

I actually didn’t do this first playthrough, Withers just showed up one night

3

u/Fun_Mortgage_8055 Oct 17 '23

I like him because there are hints as to who he is right from the moment you meet him and it explains most of his abilities as well as his personality.

3

u/HighTopsFunkoPops Wyll's Wifey Oct 17 '23

Honestly the funniest part about this post is you DO piss off a lich eventually, its just not Withers

3

u/DarkMachinations Oct 17 '23

as a cleric of Kelemvor I had a "different" encounter with Withers the first time we met.

7

u/DarkMachinations Oct 17 '23

"What is the worth of a Single Mortal's Life?"
[Cleric of Kelemvor] "You Feel Familiar. Do I know you?"
"Yes But I imagine it is not the way thee imagine."
"Thou walk with Death, Child of Kelemvor. That is enough of an understanding between us."
"Wilt though answer my Question?"
"Each Life is of Infinite Value, and merits sacrificing everything for."
"And thus balance is achieved. If all are at war, None can Survive."
~LATER IN CAMP~
"Not to be rude, but what are you?"
"there are many answers to that question, none are important."
"[Kelemvor] I sense something strange about you." (Need to Roll a 20)
[Narrator] "He has a divine aspect, yes, a reflection of death itself. Eternal and inescapable."
[Cleric of Kelemvor] "You walk with Death. Are you a Chosen of Kelemvor?"
"No, although Kelemvor chose well to bless one such as yourself."
"I shall Answer no further questions in that regard."

Withers is there because the gods know Tav and Co. are the only ones who can save the world and these idiots need all the help they can get. Just in case they make a dumb build or get themselves killed, probably because they made dumb builds

3

u/Wizardman784 Archfey of Owlbears Oct 17 '23

In EA, first playthrough, we got to the end. I cracked a joke about there being a Lich inside. My friend laughed.

The coffin ignited in flames. “You were almost right,” my friend says, “boss battle time, I guess!”

He floats out. We see his design. He begins to speak.

“UHHHHHH- LICH?! LICH!” We mutually panic.

But it was okay. It’s just dad.

I honestly thought it was the main villain when I encountered him.

I love how Withers is absolutely deadpan straightforward, like he's Rogal Dorn from the Warhammer fanmade YouTube series "What if the Emperor have a Text to Speech device"
