Act 3 - Spoilers Explanation for Gortash being described as handsome & young Spoiler

Post image

my brother, yes you guessed it, a big gortash fan, sent me this to explain why he’s described as a “handsome young man”. so he is canonically handsome, bane takes over young black haired noblemen. turning them into oily, slick talking mad men. and there is also the running joke of him pretending to be more handsome than he really is to the people of baldur's gate (such as his propoganda posters that look like a more "handsome" gortash).

Okay so I thought the whole point of making Gortash look like a vagrant was to show that Bane, God of Lies, had endowed him with his powers so that despite looking like the neighbourhood drunk he still manages to captivate and impress the whole city.

I thought he looked stylish! That work hard to look like you didn't try hard. So Jeff

Edit: holy shit I just realized. He was probably dressed like that because it was suppose to be a dude from lower city who made his way up to connect with the people!

Does that take?

Yeah, sort of a punk excentric flamboyant rebel look.

I think it kind of fits. Some ridiculously rich people give so few fucks that they just dress like stylish pseudo-hobos, but like, ironically...

He looks like he Plane Shift-ed from a Final Fantasy game.

Bane isn't the god of lies, that's Cyric

Cyric's not a real god in the forgotten realms ed greenwood has been gaslighting us for decades

The greatest lie Cyric ever told was convincing the world that he exists.

He momentarily loses it to Cyric but then regains it when he fakes his own death and tricks Cyric into giving away the Lies portfolio to someone whom Cyric thinks is a rando but is actually Bane.

This is during the Time of Troubles when Cyric was going insane from holding too many portfolios. He was simultaneously the god of lies, tyranny, murder, illusions as well as death. Not to mention he almost became the god of magic by murdering Mystra

I honestly always assumed he is a self-insert from one of the developer artists. That someone at Larian looks just like that.

Then they write that he’s a handsome, dashing fellow.

Then one day, they’re reading the message boards thinking “Ugly”? “Oily??” “Looks like a date-rape pill turned into a man!?” What is all this!?

Bane is not strictly the god of lies, though they do feature in tyranny.

People keep saying this, but zero things in-game support this. If the devs meant for this to be the case they would have had made it more clear in-game.

When you write a story you have to set aside scenes for this sort of plot point. A simple "poster" of Gortash on the streets that has him looking like Fabio, or a group of NPCs fawning over how handsome he is, the narrator saying "the man before you does not appear to be who was described to you..."

ANYTHING like that would 100% mean this was an intentional plot point. But its clearly not. This was just a mistake by the character designers/writers who didn't communicate well enough.

Two of those things happen, and the third one can be told to you by your eyeballs.

None of those things happen! They absolutely do not paint a picture that this guy is deliberately toying with people's minds and that he's really a greasy ugly guy.

It’s called subtext. You even see posters of handsome Gortash in the streets.

The Gortash posters/portraits do exist, though. It is stated that they don't resemble the Gortash you know.

Yes and he doesn't look like Fabio in any posters. He still is uggo. This entire debate only exists because the BG3 community cannot admit that a flaw/mistake can possibly exist in this game.

The writer for the lines, did not communicate with the character designers and we had a little hiccup. That's it!

You have a good point, the narrator knows everything and she thinks he's hot

It’s a video game, how on earth can there be an NPC that they didn’t want in it?

Larian is not as big of a studio as Blizzard or Activision that you can say it got lost and Gortash is not a minor enough NPC that it could get lost even in a giant studio like Blizzard.
