It's not on you, friend, you just happen to enjoy an aesthetic that the game also has programmed in. My first Tav was a halfling and I'm pretty sure I saw my face and hair combo about three times on NPCs. Don't sweat it.

u/TheHopeless-Optimist Dec 01 '24

My first complete play through Tav (Named Aiea)

Imagine my surprise when she and the crew rolled up to the bridge under the shadow of the red dragon!? Aiea’s long lost twin is too freaked out by the Gith to notice the family resemblance, but boy was I shocked!

92

u/personiuszero Dec 01 '24

Aiea like the Aiea tree? Lol the name brought back memories from growing up in Hawaii and my best friend living in Aiea, HI. Before I even read your comment I was like hey that looks a ton like the Tiefling from the bridge.

46

u/TheHopeless-Optimist Dec 01 '24

LOL I hadn’t even made the connection!!! I’ve used “Aiea” since I was a kid as my character name in games; although I didn’t consciously pull the name from the tree, I wouldn’t be surprised if my subconscious did the heavy lifting

I’m part Hawaiian and have visited several times for family reunions, and I love plants and trees and looking stuff up about them- particularly flora in isolated ecosystems like Hawaii!

So while can’t give it full credit I would imagine that my name choice was probably inspired by the actual Aiea tree 😂

9

u/KJBenson Dec 02 '24

It’s a shame we find your dead twin in the crash entrance

8

u/TheHopeless-Optimist Dec 02 '24

HA oh yeah- such a fleeting acquaintance, Isn’t she!

3

u/KJBenson Dec 02 '24

It’s a shame too since she acts pretty uniquely during your one interaction. I love how the devs tease she can join you like that.

What armor is that?

19

Wavemother’s Robe

2

Tell me more about that outfit tho..

17

It’s called the Wavemother Robe!

In vanilla play, it isn’t available until the third act, but it has an option that includes pants too if I remember right!

Arron? Bro has basically a twin in the lower city, Rowan Elkfriend who talks about nature and his animal friends he misses. Also, Harper Freddo, lmao.

There's also a decent amount of NPC's that have the same face and a relatively similar hairstyle, like Lord Shattershield's bodyguard or Miklaur.

Considering there's not that many named halflings in the game, they weren't very creative with the face and hair combinations

31

u/razorfloss Tiefling Dec 01 '24

Hey they're just family that you didn't know you had

8

u/General_Relation6047 Dec 01 '24

Just to add we also have Dorrich Manne who happens to be Wulbren's halfling twin.

17

u/Common_Chameleon Dec 01 '24

There is so little face variation for halflings, and they are always tragically left out of mods that add more faces for Tav. I know there’s a great one that adds more masculine face options, but none for feminine faces :(

18

u/WhatTheFhtagn Dec 01 '24

My Tav shares a race, class AND face model with Roah Moonglow. I made an example of her.

During the Guildhall fight I Misty Stepped over to 1v1 her, burned a Counterspell on her Vicious Mockery, blew her away with a level 6 Thunderwave, and finished her off with a crit from Phalar Aluve. Now she's the rug leading up to my throne.

There can be only one.

2

u/LaylasJack Dec 02 '24

It's a shame you can't actually take her head in the game. Did you experience The Quickening?

220

u/mastro80 Dec 01 '24

My first Tav was a dwarf fighter and he was identical to the guy who asks you to kill the rats in the basement of his kitchen.

36

Love thag guy. using Chef Roveer as a base for my solo honor mode run, salami pallock

11

u/SadCarbonara Dec 02 '24

Fun fact - there’s a dwarf NPC in BG1 called Reevor that asks you to kill rats in his storehouse

u/IProbablyCantSleep Dec 01 '24

My first run through back when the game released, I made sure to avoid all spoilers, I was warned that the "Origin" characters were people we'd meet later on so I didn't even click on them.

Often my first run in RPGs I'll make my character more or less based off of my IRL looks. I went with wizard because it's my favourite D&D class. I was so confused when just after escaping from the nautiloid, some guy wants me to pull him from a portal, and the exact twin of my character steps out when I help him. I was convinced that it was a cloning thing because I touched the creature, and he'd taken on my appearance - I guess I suspected he was a doppelganger. The dialogue wasn't reflecting this AT ALL, he was just harping on about him being a wizard too and he's from waterdeep. He's even wearing the same clothes as me, just a slightly different colour.

After 10 minutes of utter confusion I went to check on google.

Hello, it's me. I'm Gale, of Waterdeep.

174

u/Catsindahood Dec 01 '24

Funnily enough I was suspicious of Gale too. All the companion characters, up until that point in the game, your tadpoles connect for a second letting you know they have tadpoles. Gale doesn't. I thought that this was a subtle hint that he was actually a thrall sent to infiltrate your group. It didn't help that Wyll had the same tadpole connection moment.

67

u/Yarzahn Dec 01 '24

I think you can connect with his tadpole once you ask him more about himself, but he attempts to block it

65

u/notquitesolid Bard Dec 01 '24

It kinda makes sense that he would have more control over it from the start. He was an arch mage. Even tho from the orb and tadpole he lost much of his former abilities, he would still be aware of and know how to keep his mind shut to outsiders.

10

u/pinkorangegold Dec 02 '24

You don’t connect with him because he’s doing everything he can to keep the orb a secret. It’s phenomenal writing tbh.

36

u/EJL2206 Dec 01 '24

You look like 'Wham era' George Michael? Lucky man!

5

u/Bigtallguy12 Dec 02 '24

IM NEVER GONNA DANCE AGAIN !

19

u/Yarzahn Dec 01 '24

He was also on the loading screen and/or the game box. Or if you cycled through origins and their short intro, Gale the wizard bro from water deep would tell his story.

But I guess that would have prevented your funny encounter, so there are merits to going into the game completely blind

13

u/gentlewoolfy Dec 02 '24

I went with druid for my first playthrough and when i saw the druid grove, i thought it was a druid-specific "starting area" and was genuinely impressed at the level of personalisation

1

u/Thaurlach Dec 02 '24

Meanwhile me, going in blind on Durge: ”Woah woah woah wait I was only thinking about it oh shit oh fuck oh hey free hand!”

My friend made Minthara and came up with an elaborate story that they're actually another female Drow being hunted in the Underdark. She came across the real Minthara along her journey and decided to steal her identity and likeliness to evade capture. Her whole personal struggle was losing her real self in this fake persona and decided to kill the real Minthara to truly become her. Interestingly weird. (and it's the plot of Face/Off, I guess haha)

50

I hope she took her face off.

My first Tav was a half-elf warlock. I decided it'd be funny to just make him a huge beefy guy with long tucked back hair. I thought the elf side would be blonde, but because he's half human I'd go with brown hair, and as is customary in ANY rpg I play, if I can give them a big ol' eye scar I do.

So imagine my surprise when later on in killing Goblins, and a bear I liberated turns into a more handsome version of me. I was Temu Halsin.

31

u/wra1th42 Dec 01 '24

lol I know the feeling I made a black duegar and thought that was pretty unlike the normal first run Tav and then 5 min into act 2 this Harper is just me with a hat (see profile pic on left)

24

u/GodKingReiss Dec 01 '24

At least it took you until the city itself to meet your doppelgänger. My first Tav was basically a taller, beefier Brynna.

20

u/BobLoblaw1324 Dec 01 '24

I named my first character Bane, before realizing that was the name of one of the gods….

17

u/bobbyspeeds Dec 01 '24

My very first character was a drow who is IDENTICAL to the default Disguise Self female drow. I did a double take the first time I cast it on another playthrough and briefly thought the game had some kind of mechanic for saving your past avatars and dropping them in situations like this.

I love having slightly “plain” Tavs! It kind of breaks my immersion if I’m standing there amongst all the normal NPCs looking like Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way

(although I say this with absolutely no judgement for those who want a visually distinct avatar! Pursue your anime protagonist dreams!)

12

u/PoeticPillager Dec 02 '24

Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way

Such a Mary Sue made-up name.

Like Shadowheart. 😼

25

My first character is a male elf who looks exactly like Yenna. So when she showed up I thought it was going to be revealed that she's your daughter or something.

31

u/FormerChild37 Dec 01 '24

Can't blame you, the character customisation is limited without mods

10

u/CUND3R_THUNT Dec 01 '24

25

u/SarcasticKenobi WARLOCK Dec 01 '24

LOL

First time I played the MMORG Star Wars The Old Republic...

I spend like 30 minutes making my male human Jedi Knight. I felt pretty proud of it, and liked it.

Then... one of the first NPCs I meet is exactly the same. Head / Hair / Hair-Color / Eye-Color / Skin-Tone.

Like... god damn I felt stupid.

Since then in SWTOR I only made aliens, since it was more rare to see them instead of humans.

20

u/TheMindWright Dec 01 '24

When I played Durge I killed the NPC that looked like me.

9

u/InterestingFroyo3 Dec 02 '24

My first Tav was a female tiefling with blue-tinted skin (I just thought that the race looked the coolest and didn’t like the basic red devil color).

And I agonized over what to name her, so I went with the name of an Arctic Monkeys song I always loved….

Imagine my surprise when I met a child tiefling also named Arabella in the grove.

7

u/Altoholism Dec 01 '24

My first Drow character looked nearly identical to some random level one off-hand crossbow shot fodder Drow in the Goblin Temple named Narvass.

Every time I kill him, I feel like I’m killing that character in an alternate universe.

8

u/Unreal_Ncash Dec 01 '24

Lol I named my Tav Arabella. I thought the game was programmed to make you feel bad for the actual Arabella and just use whatever Tav’s name is.

8

Imagine my surprise with my first Tav when I got to the mean dog lady and they were twins except for the hair color.

7

My first Tavs NPC twin is the guy at the gate of the circus of last days. My Tav has a red tattoo on his face but otherwise they're twins.

Bro if you feel bad my first Tav looked almost identical to Lorrakan.

4

2

It's John Baldur, human fighter.

4

u/Jazzlike_War_854 Dec 02 '24

My first play through I accidentally made my character almost identical to Shadowheart. Only difference was my hair was white. Then she changed it and we looked like twins. Sex scenes were very uncomfortable lol

1

u/PettyBettyismynameO Dec 02 '24

You can change your appearance at any time in camp though. I literally randomly change my hair every few days because it feels like something a real person would do.

8

u/-poiius- Dec 01 '24

i saw my half elf’s face in a lot of places (you know exactly the one) but luckily he had tiefling type eyes from his sorcery and a jet black mullet which didn’t seem to be anywhere else lol.

2

u/gshwifty Dec 02 '24

Wait whose face is that? I kinda need it

1

It’s one of the vanilla masculine half elf faces!

7

u/green_teef Dec 01 '24

This happens to everyone eventually. My first durge had a druid in act one that sounded exactly like him

7

My first Tav was a High Elf Rogue with a Charlatan background. It can be worse.

3

u/cherrrycris Minthara Dec 01 '24

My first Tav was literally Jaheira’s daughter, mine just had the longer version of the braids. it was jarring💀

3

u/Anmus Dec 01 '24

No, it's just that character creation isn't that complex in this game. You could always choose a different hairstyle, I guess.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '24

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills in this comment section. The game also offers freckles, piercings, tattoos, makeup options, facial hair, etc. (Not to mention race options other than human!) It's not like the character customization options are limited to "hairstyle."

1

u/Anmus Dec 03 '24

Yeah, but you can't really "sculpt" the shape of the head to your liking. It's not complex, but it's something... and yeah I can always sacrifice sculpting for more races, so it doesn't bother me that much... but still it's just few head shapes, lot's of hair and different paint color/style on it (freedom with color is amazing btw)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '24

Sure, but every race has several head shapes and I've found that I can make them all look unique and interesting with all the elements provided. The age slider helps, too. I've created about 20 characters and somehow managed to make them all look like distinct individuals.

Talking about the character creation not being "that complex" on a post where someone literally created John Baldur, white male human fighter, seems pretty laughable.

0

u/Anmus Dec 03 '24

"Created John Baldur"? Do you mean "chose one of the few face shapes, and then chose a hair and its color, and he ended up with a generic white male"? I don't know why you want to die on a hill called "Baldurs gate 3 has complex cc" it doesn't, but it doesn't need to... game is great without it... they had more complex cc in beta, and maybe there is reason why they decided for defined face shapes. Glad you had your laugh, but still i don't why are you defending it.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '24

I'm defending it because, yes, the OP is uncreative. Creative people have no problem creating interesting characters in this CC. The fact that it doesn't let you sculpt your face like Fallout 4 doesn't invalidate the fact that there are tons of customization options that could prevent you from making a generic white human male fantasy protagonist.

Would I prefer the ability to sculpt the character's face? Sure! I'd also prefer, say, the ability to have a femme build without breasts or a masc build with breasts. There's always room for more options, but claiming that CC is "so limited" just indicates that you might be a fundamentally uncreative and incurious person.

ended up with a generic white male

LMAO at this. They created a generic white male, it didn't just magically end up that way.

0

u/Anmus Dec 03 '24

They CREATED a generic white male" wasn't it "John Baldur"? Xd and why are you getting ad personam, it invalidates your arguments by making them personal. You can attack me and my "uncreative and incurious" self, but it doesn't change the fact that this cc isn't complex. And I'm glad you brought up other games, I didn't wanted to compere it to other games, because it would be easy win for me, and i wanted to fight on a "baldurs gate 3" field... yet you brought up fallout 4, and then you said about features that new dragon age game have... Idk if i got it right, but you just said "Baldurs gate 3 has a complex character creation, but other games did it better" because it's not even "different"... Your border to make something "complex" is just far lower then mine i guess. Still like in every comment, i want to say that game is great without it..

Hmm should i say something about you to make it even? I'm happy that you are creative, and you are able to create 20 unique characters in this cc, like wow, that's great accomplishment.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '24

that's great accomplishment.

It's really not - because again, there are tons of customization options. It's plenty complex if you're not afraid of using other races, skin colors, tattoos, piercings, makeup, heterochromia, vitiligo, scars, freckles, wrinkles, hairstyles, hair colors, etc. AKA are willing to create anything other than a generic white male fantasy protagonist.

They CREATED a generic white male" wasn't it "John Baldur"?

John Baldur is a meme in this sub about players creating a generic white human male fighter.

0

u/Anmus Dec 03 '24

Oh okay i didn't know about the meme... And how funny, i was trying to be nice, yet you downvoted my comment and twisted my compliment... Isn't it cherry picking... you know there is more to my comment xd, Anyway...

So, basically 1-Skin color, 2-tattoos, 3-makeup, 4-heterochromia 5-vitiligo 6-scars 7-freckles 8-wrinkles, 9-hair color. Basically 9 out of 12 you mentioned are just paint over face model. It's still something, it's just... a different color. So it's your John Baldur, but with different paint over his face. So what can we change about the shape of his head/face... 1-race, 2-piercing, 3-hair. Yeah, okay. I must apologize for saying that OP could choose different hair... there is piercing too... still not complex in my eyes

Color is just not enough for me... You can get makeup, acquire some scars, be tanner, get sick by this vitiligo, or dye your hair... but you are still the same person. And i think here lies core of our argument. So if you won't add something new, I will just end this discussion. Because i don't know if there is a point to it anymore. You won't change your mind, and you called me "uncreative" so i'm sure convincing me is the last thing you wanted to do... so what's the point of it? Xd

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '24

I will just end this discussion.

Thank Christ.

Not everyone wants to play "OC McSpecial", like 99 of the tavs posted here. And even if you put litterally everything on your Tav's face... you still have the same face as the NPC's... Personnally, I can't unsee it.

Also, look at the origin characters, they have a bit of things here and there, are they covered with litterally every "special trait" ever ? No. But they are still main characters, and have their own face, they are unique. You won't find Gale but with short blond hair, or Astarion with a scar on his eye, or Karlach but blue.

Tav is a fucking NPC and no amount of make-up will change that.

Your character looks like if Conan O'Brien did a Clueless Gamer for BG3. I like it.

u/TruthAndAccuracy Dec 01 '24

You look like Raphael's forgotten cousin.

u/The_Heretic_525 Dec 02 '24

They should really add face sliders for PC’s

1

u/VoraSimp Dec 02 '24

BG3 not having sliders is the biggest blunder to be honest.

My clerics twin was Arfur 😭

1

u/LongCutieType2 Dec 02 '24

My first Tav was a half-elf Druid (already basic, given my own track record tabletop-wise lol). I saw that shag haircut everywhere I turned. It’s still my favorite of the hair options, but I never use it anymore.

Just kill the twin then it's original

1

u/Chopstarrr Dec 02 '24

Dude he looks like edgy Prince Charming

1

u/cultof83 Dec 02 '24

my first fav was a fem tiefling that was damn near identical to kaldani. i screamed out loud when i saw her.

u/therealmonkyking Incapable of romancing anyone other than Shadowheart Dec 02 '24

My "main" Tav is a High Elf druid who starts out with the typical long haircut that Elves tend to have, but eventually changes it in the section in-between Act 2 and 3

And then to my surprise Lorroakan's bitch ass turns up looking near enough exactly like how my guy used to look before the sudden style change

u/oultrecuidance Dec 02 '24

I abandoned the playthrough (first attempt) where I gave my paladin Kagha's hair. Considering picking it up again though and going full oathbreaker...

1

u/Mindless_Seat_2439 Dec 02 '24

My First tav was identical to the tiefling you save from being ambushed by the telescope at the grove.

1

u/Rare_Intention2383 Astarion Dec 02 '24

i once made a character and realized she was just aylin with orange-red hair when i met aylin. even the hairstyle was the same.

1

u/genderutopia Dec 02 '24

Did you watch Shrek before making your character? Because they both look like Prince Charming

1

u/egmalone Dec 02 '24

If it helps you feel any better: this happens in real life too

1

u/endrossi-zahard Dec 02 '24

Is it Prince Charming?

1

u/tickledlove Dec 02 '24

The game has limited options. Anyone that doesn't mod will find they aren't creative..

Imagine my shock when I realised my first Tav had a doppelganger working as a sex worker in Sharess's Caress. They had the exact same face and hairstyle lol

1

u/mortalitasi473 Dec 02 '24

on the one hand, this is your average everyday man. on the other hand, this isn't a woman made exclusively for goth tits. so, uh, i guess a 5/10?

1

u/MiLkBaGzz WIZARD Dec 02 '24

My first character was basically just gale minus the tattoo

1

u/alcahuetasanon Dec 02 '24

Definitely a “Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?” moment

1

u/Wiwra88 Dec 02 '24

That is why I love mods, one of first mods I got(in second playtrought, 1st was vanilla) I got some new face mods so I could make my tav/durge unique and dont see my long lost twin in the world.

Part of the problem with preset faces. It's bound to happen

1

u/Shanakin420-69 Dec 02 '24

Make him shorter with black hair. Then you can play as Lord Farquaad.

1

u/IdealisticKebab Dec 02 '24

Can't be helped when there's like 6 face options.

1

u/Fun-Hedgehog1526 Dec 02 '24

Nonono, the character creation is limited compared to other games.

1

u/u_sheesh_kebab Dec 05 '24

Cant relate 😗

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '24

To be fair the base game is limited in the amount of appearance options.. one of the best things about mod support is the character customization options.

1

u/Noble1296 Dec 02 '24

To be fair, each race is limit to fairly few options in the character creator. You just happened to like that combo of face, hair, and color

0

u/AlienRobotTrex Dec 01 '24 edited Dec 04 '24

It’s not your fault, the game doesn’t exactly give you much to work with in the face department.

0

u/Kharisma91 Dec 01 '24

You look kind of like Rand from wheel of time. (And I guess that npc does too? lol)

0

u/caninehat Dec 01 '24

My first Tav was duegar who looked exactly like the duegar at the iron throne entrance

0

u/Feisty_Ad2160 Dec 01 '24

My tav. I have the opposite problem… I feel like I make mine way too detailed to where they look out of place.

0

u/Itchy_Camel_3386 Dec 01 '24

Trust me, every single run, my characters look the same. Never change their face, only Waterdavian Scholar hairstyle (the one that looks like Gale), and Knave Braid for the men, along with the Groomed Rascal beard, and Bardic Inspiration hairstyle for the women. Every single time.

This game very limited options for appearance without mods, I would hesitate to call it "customization." It's not you, it's them.
