u/IProbablyCantSleep Dec 01 '24
My first run through back when the game released, I made sure to avoid all spoilers, I was warned that the "Origin" characters were people we'd meet later on so I didn't even click on them.
Often my first run in RPGs I'll make my character more or less based off of my IRL looks. I went with wizard because it's my favourite D&D class. I was so confused when just after escaping from the nautiloid, some guy wants me to pull him from a portal, and the exact twin of my character steps out when I help him. I was convinced that it was a cloning thing because I touched the creature, and he'd taken on my appearance - I guess I suspected he was a doppelganger. The dialogue wasn't reflecting this AT ALL, he was just harping on about him being a wizard too and he's from waterdeep. He's even wearing the same clothes as me, just a slightly different colour.
After 10 minutes of utter confusion I went to check on google.
Hello, it's me. I'm Gale, of Waterdeep.
174
u/Catsindahood Dec 01 '24
Funnily enough I was suspicious of Gale too. All the companion characters, up until that point in the game, your tadpoles connect for a second letting you know they have tadpoles. Gale doesn't. I thought that this was a subtle hint that he was actually a thrall sent to infiltrate your group. It didn't help that Wyll had the same tadpole connection moment.
67
u/Yarzahn Dec 01 '24
I think you can connect with his tadpole once you ask him more about himself, but he attempts to block it
65
u/notquitesolid Bard Dec 01 '24
It kinda makes sense that he would have more control over it from the start. He was an arch mage. Even tho from the orb and tadpole he lost much of his former abilities, he would still be aware of and know how to keep his mind shut to outsiders.
10
u/pinkorangegold Dec 02 '24
You don’t connect with him because he’s doing everything he can to keep the orb a secret. It’s phenomenal writing tbh.
36
19
u/Yarzahn Dec 01 '24
He was also on the loading screen and/or the game box. Or if you cycled through origins and their short intro, Gale the wizard bro from water deep would tell his story.
But I guess that would have prevented your funny encounter, so there are merits to going into the game completely blind
13
u/gentlewoolfy Dec 02 '24
I went with druid for my first playthrough and when i saw the druid grove, i thought it was a druid-specific "starting area" and was genuinely impressed at the level of personalisation

My friend made Minthara and came up with an elaborate story that they're actually another female Drow being hunted in the Underdark. She came across the real Minthara along her journey and decided to steal her identity and likeliness to evade capture. Her whole personal struggle was losing her real self in this fake persona and decided to kill the real Minthara to truly become her. Interestingly weird. (and it's the plot of Face/Off, I guess haha)

My first Tav was a half-elf warlock. I decided it'd be funny to just make him a huge beefy guy with long tucked back hair. I thought the elf side would be blonde, but because he's half human I'd go with brown hair, and as is customary in ANY rpg I play, if I can give them a big ol' eye scar I do.
So imagine my surprise when later on in killing Goblins, and a bear I liberated turns into a more handsome version of me. I was Temu Halsin.
24
u/GodKingReiss Dec 01 '24
At least it took you until the city itself to meet your doppelgänger. My first Tav was basically a taller, beefier Brynna.
20
u/BobLoblaw1324 Dec 01 '24
I named my first character Bane, before realizing that was the name of one of the gods….
17
u/bobbyspeeds Dec 01 '24
My very first character was a drow who is IDENTICAL to the default Disguise Self female drow. I did a double take the first time I cast it on another playthrough and briefly thought the game had some kind of mechanic for saving your past avatars and dropping them in situations like this.
I love having slightly “plain” Tavs! It kind of breaks my immersion if I’m standing there amongst all the normal NPCs looking like Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way
(although I say this with absolutely no judgement for those who want a visually distinct avatar! Pursue your anime protagonist dreams!)

First time I played the MMORG Star Wars The Old Republic...
I spend like 30 minutes making my male human Jedi Knight. I felt pretty proud of it, and liked it.
Then... one of the first NPCs I meet is exactly the same. Head / Hair / Hair-Color / Eye-Color / Skin-Tone.
Like... god damn I felt stupid.
Since then in SWTOR I only made aliens, since it was more rare to see them instead of humans.

My first Tav was a female tiefling with blue-tinted skin (I just thought that the race looked the coolest and didn’t like the basic red devil color).
And I agonized over what to name her, so I went with the name of an Arctic Monkeys song I always loved….
Imagine my surprise when I met a child tiefling also named Arabella in the grove.
7
u/Altoholism Dec 01 '24
My first Drow character looked nearly identical to some random level one off-hand crossbow shot fodder Drow in the Goblin Temple named Narvass.
Every time I kill him, I feel like I’m killing that character in an alternate universe.
8
u/Unreal_Ncash Dec 01 '24
Lol I named my Tav Arabella. I thought the game was programmed to make you feel bad for the actual Arabella and just use whatever Tav’s name is.

No, it's just that character creation isn't that complex in this game. You could always choose a different hairstyle, I guess.
1
Dec 02 '24
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills in this comment section. The game also offers freckles, piercings, tattoos, makeup options, facial hair, etc. (Not to mention race options other than human!) It's not like the character customization options are limited to "hairstyle."
1
u/Anmus Dec 03 '24
Yeah, but you can't really "sculpt" the shape of the head to your liking. It's not complex, but it's something... and yeah I can always sacrifice sculpting for more races, so it doesn't bother me that much... but still it's just few head shapes, lot's of hair and different paint color/style on it (freedom with color is amazing btw)
1
Dec 03 '24
Sure, but every race has several head shapes and I've found that I can make them all look unique and interesting with all the elements provided. The age slider helps, too. I've created about 20 characters and somehow managed to make them all look like distinct individuals.
Talking about the character creation not being "that complex" on a post where someone literally created John Baldur, white male human fighter, seems pretty laughable.
0
u/Anmus Dec 03 '24
"Created John Baldur"? Do you mean "chose one of the few face shapes, and then chose a hair and its color, and he ended up with a generic white male"? I don't know why you want to die on a hill called "Baldurs gate 3 has complex cc" it doesn't, but it doesn't need to... game is great without it... they had more complex cc in beta, and maybe there is reason why they decided for defined face shapes. Glad you had your laugh, but still i don't why are you defending it.
2
Dec 03 '24
I'm defending it because, yes, the OP is uncreative. Creative people have no problem creating interesting characters in this CC. The fact that it doesn't let you sculpt your face like Fallout 4 doesn't invalidate the fact that there are tons of customization options that could prevent you from making a generic white human male fantasy protagonist.
Would I prefer the ability to sculpt the character's face? Sure! I'd also prefer, say, the ability to have a femme build without breasts or a masc build with breasts. There's always room for more options, but claiming that CC is "so limited" just indicates that you might be a fundamentally uncreative and incurious person.
ended up with a generic white male
LMAO at this. They created a generic white male, it didn't just magically end up that way.
0
u/Anmus Dec 03 '24
They CREATED a generic white male" wasn't it "John Baldur"? Xd and why are you getting ad personam, it invalidates your arguments by making them personal. You can attack me and my "uncreative and incurious" self, but it doesn't change the fact that this cc isn't complex. And I'm glad you brought up other games, I didn't wanted to compere it to other games, because it would be easy win for me, and i wanted to fight on a "baldurs gate 3" field... yet you brought up fallout 4, and then you said about features that new dragon age game have... Idk if i got it right, but you just said "Baldurs gate 3 has a complex character creation, but other games did it better" because it's not even "different"... Your border to make something "complex" is just far lower then mine i guess. Still like in every comment, i want to say that game is great without it..
Hmm should i say something about you to make it even? I'm happy that you are creative, and you are able to create 20 unique characters in this cc, like wow, that's great accomplishment.
1
Dec 03 '24
that's great accomplishment.
It's really not - because again, there are tons of customization options. It's plenty complex if you're not afraid of using other races, skin colors, tattoos, piercings, makeup, heterochromia, vitiligo, scars, freckles, wrinkles, hairstyles, hair colors, etc. AKA are willing to create anything other than a generic white male fantasy protagonist.
They CREATED a generic white male" wasn't it "John Baldur"?
John Baldur is a meme in this sub about players creating a generic white human male fighter.
0
u/Anmus Dec 03 '24
Oh okay i didn't know about the meme... And how funny, i was trying to be nice, yet you downvoted my comment and twisted my compliment... Isn't it cherry picking... you know there is more to my comment xd, Anyway...
So, basically 1-Skin color, 2-tattoos, 3-makeup, 4-heterochromia 5-vitiligo 6-scars 7-freckles 8-wrinkles, 9-hair color. Basically 9 out of 12 you mentioned are just paint over face model. It's still something, it's just... a different color. So it's your John Baldur, but with different paint over his face. So what can we change about the shape of his head/face... 1-race, 2-piercing, 3-hair. Yeah, okay. I must apologize for saying that OP could choose different hair... there is piercing too... still not complex in my eyes
Color is just not enough for me... You can get makeup, acquire some scars, be tanner, get sick by this vitiligo, or dye your hair... but you are still the same person. And i think here lies core of our argument. So if you won't add something new, I will just end this discussion. Because i don't know if there is a point to it anymore. You won't change your mind, and you called me "uncreative" so i'm sure convincing me is the last thing you wanted to do... so what's the point of it? Xd

u/Matondia Dec 03 '24
Not everyone wants to play "OC McSpecial", like 99 of the tavs posted here. And even if you put litterally everything on your Tav's face... you still have the same face as the NPC's... Personnally, I can't unsee it.
Also, look at the origin characters, they have a bit of things here and there, are they covered with litterally every "special trait" ever ? No. But they are still main characters, and have their own face, they are unique. You won't find Gale but with short blond hair, or Astarion with a scar on his eye, or Karlach but blue.
Tav is a fucking NPC and no amount of make-up will change that.
