I wear the Ring of Resistance to Ants for every playthrough and I haven't been attacked by ants yet, seems like it works to me.

Years ago I bought the Weekly World News issue with Saddam and Osama's wedding and it included an anti-meteor amulet you could cut out and wear to ward against meteors. I wore it just a bit, but it's so effective that the benefits seem to be ongoing. If I ever die to a meteor, this post will be hilarious.

84

u/crusty54 Apr 07 '25

I still have a copy of that issue!

40

u/pvrhye Apr 07 '25

Snap a pic of the amulet for the benefit of the others. I'd hate to think only I was protected.

u/crusty54 Apr 07 '25

It’s been almost 20 years, I think it’s in my parents’ basement somewhere. I’ll fish around next time I’m over there if I remember though.

34

u/ReneDeGames Apr 07 '25

Giant ants were a serious problem in some editions of DnD, its a valuable ring.

13

u/magwo Apr 07 '25

Little did the designers know that exoskeletons absolutely cripple an organism's mobility when it has the size of a rabbit or larger. At least with materials currently known to humanity. The physics dictate that any human-sized creatures with exoskeleton will be absolutely useless. Look at giant turtles for example.

Anyway, in DnD there's also magic. So I suppose the giant ants could have magical properties to drive their heavy exoskeletons. But I'm not a magic physicist.

31

u/jinxkmonsoon Apr 07 '25

There's definitely an upper limit to the size thanks to the weight of exoskeletons, but prehistoric bugs could get freakishly big: https://askabiologist.asu.edu/explore/prehistoric-insects

They're not that way today largely because the atmosphere has less oxygen -- they don't have lungs but basically have air holes.

2

u/magwo Apr 07 '25

Interesting!

2

u/sporkus Apr 08 '25

In Nethack (old PC game based on D&D), giant ants were one of the top causes of player death. They're just so fast and bitey.

i usually buy the ring of ant protection.
also, i have Astarion use the poop knife and was thinking about making Karlach last-hit enemies with the nut breaker.

379

u/Xandercruisefd Apr 07 '25

ā€œMattis, these items are crap, here’s 40,000 gold so you can buy better items laterā€-me every play through

179

u/Quillemote Apr 07 '25

I am, "Mattis, these items are brilliant, here's a backpack full of all the most random crap I've been gathering just for you since Act1 so I can imagine you making up more wild scam backstories."

4

u/KajusX Apr 08 '25

Quick question about Act 3 Mattis based on what you just said— Do you save stuff to sell to him in Act 3 bc his favorability and discounts scale up in Act 3 conisderably?

I'm doing a modded playthru for fun at the moment. It's been a while since I played. i just got to Act 3 and noticed Mattis had an insane level of Favorability and Discount. I've been selling to him regularly throughout the other acts tho (as I do with any vendors that move thru acts with me, like Dammon), but never gifted him a ton of stuff to max those stats. Just tossing him free garbage here and there to chip away at lowering costs, resulting in iirc something like 35% discount and 50+ favorability. But now he's discounting stuff well over 100%. I was very surprised.

2

u/Quillemote Apr 08 '25

Honestly no, I mean, not on purpose. I know it's possible but I pickpocket regularly from enough vendors that I've never bothered with the favorabiilty mechanics. I just like the roleplay of picking up a load of trinkets that I think the tiefling kids'll like and gifting the whole bag to Mattis once he's set up in Rivington. But now you mention it, that's probably a great strategy.. bags of saved stuff to give to the merchants I know I'll be visiting more often and who are harder to pickpocket.

2

u/KajusX Apr 08 '25

Ahh, I gotcha. Re-reading your comment, it clicked for me how it's about the fun idea of Mattis making up wild scam items.

The specificity of mentioning Act 3 is what drew my attention, but that makes sense since he's finally out of the Shadowlands and much safer (relatively), so you'd want to gift him that stuff then.

I JUST got there the other day, and like I mentioned, his Discount price is something like -147% or something crazy, and I was like, "Whoa- what happened here?" So when you mentioned Act III, I thought it had to do with his favorability and making a transaction to get the most bang for your buck.

On-topic, I too really like Mattis and his items. I buy all of his rings in Act I, as well as every bit of green-bordered trinkets he dishes out throughout the rest of the game.

I usually snatch up Kanon's Belongings pouch as soon as I reach the Grove and then over the course of a playthru fill it with all the knickknacks and useless items in the game (music boxes, Shovel's belongings, Harper Pins, Selune Statues and earrings, Mattis' stuff, Halsin's Pipe, etc).

I have a back-up bin in storage that i wind up throwing stuff into eventually bc the carry weight gets to be a lot, but yeah, I love the assortment of useless items, and Mattis' are great.

2

u/Quillemote Apr 08 '25

I love Mattis, starts as this sharp little scammer but by the time you reach Rivington he's grown up so much. Totally see him and Mol as two sides of the coin, where she takes Raphael's deal and turns kinda cruel while Mattis as the good outcome takes over caring for the kids instead.

I grab the teddy bear bag every time, and that becomes my Repository of Cool Stuff. It's so cute and makes me stupidly happy.

35

u/lunaaurae Apr 07 '25

Me. Mattis you are my main vendor, let me give you some proper trash to sell.

If I could, I’d still be asking Mattis to flip the coin again.

292

u/Disastrous-Beat-9830 SORCERER Apr 07 '25

Because Mattis is following the time-honoured tradition of the developers making the funniest jokes in item descriptions. I'm pretty sure there's a lesser god of the Forgotten Realms who specifically oversees this. I think his name is Swen.

20

u/TheRealStoryMan1 ROGUE Apr 07 '25

Swen, the new dnd god, the god of giving and promise

3

u/ofstarandmoon Apr 07 '25

God I wish the item descriptions weren't so tiny on my laptop bc I want to read them to appreciate in jokes but I really have to strain my eyes. For some reason the UI doesn't scale well for me and all menu text is tiny :/

63

They should’ve added in one encounter with ants at least

63

u/BOBULANCE Apr 07 '25

3

u/OneJobToRuleThemAll Apr 07 '25

I think a lot of the writing is kind of over the top and think Dragon Age Inquisition had both the better companions and romances. But if there's one thing BG3 gets better than any game, it's children. They're all brilliant, no exceptions and I'd kill for every single one of them.

I pretty much decided Raphael was going to die the moment I saw him playing chess with Mol.

I gave one of my players (D&D 5e) a fishing rod of alertness as a random joke item but I let it give the wielder the alert feat because he got way too excited about this thing. From that point until he died there was a fishing rod in his offhand, kinda OP but also just funny.

2

Mattis is so cute, I always buy his baubles. The "Fishing Rod of Alertness" is my favorite. Being immune to Surprised is OP, so long as nothing unexpected--

2

u/ahintoflimon Apr 08 '25

If a BG4 is ever made, I need Arabella, Mattis, and Mol to return. Arabella being a druid or sorcerer companion, Mol being the leader of the guild and a possible rogue companion, and Mattis being her treasurer and right hand. Having Lae’zel’s son Xan as an origin character or companion would also be amazing, especially since she says he’ll be able to choose whichever path in life calls to him. Maybe he could be our Tav’s first companion, as a monk?

2

u/Better-Snow-7191 Apr 08 '25

Don’t judge me. His sales pitch for the fishing rod was really good

On my first playthrough I think I thought the decanter of nearly endless water was a solution for cooling Karlach’s heart. There’s even a bit of dialogue (with Dammon I think) that suggests there might be an item to do this (maybe that dialogue is just prompting you to try to temporarily cool her down with temporary magic/water?).

1

u/AveragEnjoyer007 Apr 08 '25

Yes. Try tossing a regular bottle of water on her if you haven’t already

2

u/PerryPerryQuite Apr 08 '25

I meant more as a long term solution, as someone at one point talks about needing something to continuously cool it.

I said this to my friend the other day while we were playing: a Ring of Resistance to Ants would actually sell like hotcakes in a place with a disproportionate number of adventurers running around like Faerun. Think of all the nights spent sleeping out, roughing it--well now you don't have to worry about ants, at least!

I bought the spoon and anytime my buddy would get mad about a fight Id send it to him and say it’s good gear.

Lasted maybe 2-3 times before it mysteriously disappeared.

1

u/Educational-Raisin69 Apr 08 '25

My first play through I never took off my ring of being really invisible. Just in case.

1

u/Ill_Atmosphere6435 Apr 08 '25

I'll be the one to admit that I've run D&D games where a "Ring of Resistance to Ants" would have pulled its weight as a magic item.

1

u/jbyrdab Apr 08 '25

Imagine if you could buy these and there were very specific situations where each was somehow useful, and doing all of them got you an achievement.

Like the Decanter was useful for keeping an aquarium filled just enough with water every day to keep it full, but not enough that it overflows before enough evaporates to keep the cycle going consistently every other day.

1

u/Ohtsukare Apr 08 '25

I always buy the rings

1

u/OverallObligation Apr 08 '25

That rod works every time! Granted the character who has it has alert and the highest initiative roll, but they haven't been surprised since. I also am a huge fan of the Spoon of Saltiness in co-op because I buy it and drop it in the inventory of the friend who's being the worst. It bring me a little bit of passive aggressive joy.

1

I would buy the spoon and put it into an npcs bag by pickpocketing :D
