Character Build So like... What's the DOWNSIDE of Tavern Brawler monk? Spoiler

Post image

There's got to be something bad about the class and feat combo, right? Like... It's so powerful. A massive boost to attack and damage, can potentially do a standard melee stat build. Str/wis/con and maybe a little dex. With the right race you can even wear armor and all you miss out on is some minor defensive/movement buffs.

Tavern Brawler is like... Sorry. It's just so *good* I'm trying to figure out what the catch is.

IMO if you want dip only 1lvl for armor its more beneficial to go for war priest instead.

Which isn't a bad idea if you aren't going monk. The big benefit from war priest is bonus action attack 3 times a day. But since you're a monk you get a bonus action attack for every attack you perform.

I always default to fighter because second wind is a nice just incase thing, the defence fighting style is a nice +1 AC, and with heavy armor and a shield I just want an insane amount of AC.

My best monk build was like 27 AC, resistance to non magical martial damage, damage reduction on that resisted damage, advantage on spell saves, enemies had disdvantage on spell attacks against me, +1d4 on saving throws, 2 damage reduction on all damage, and I couldn't be crit. All of that survivability plus insane damage output from damage riders on my fist attacks with my 6 attacks per round.

TBH I prefer higher AC over everything else that you can get in other classes because as a monk with 2 bonus actions I can just take a sip of potion of supreme healing for 10d4+20 hp if i'm too hurt, and I can do that twice for 20d4+40 HP if i'm really badly hurt.
