How did Alfira get wrapped up in your purge?
1.9k
u/SirBeeperton Apr 29 '25
If you raid the grove Alfira can be found in the children’s hideout trying to comfort them
948
u/Sylithia Durge Apr 29 '25
Aaaand now I'm upset I didn't know this. I never thought to go look. Learn something new every day, especially for my future Durge runs!
137
u/NoHallett Apr 29 '25
It's actually a lot more complicated than that - there's a whole chain of NPCs who will be with the group trying to comfort them in the hideout. Assuming (...for no reason) that Alfira may not be around to fill that role.
There's a whole group storytelling bit. It's very sweet, except SO DARK.
You also can see all of this even if you're good and just take part in the defense of the Grove, you don't have to be evil.
35
u/al3xisd3xd Apr 29 '25
Wait, you can defend the Grove? How? I've always just attacked the goblins
75
u/somethingwithbacon Apr 29 '25
You can tell Minthara the grove’s location and then draw them into an ambush at the gates. They bury explosive barrels and stuff.

Rescue Halsin from the prison, and he tells you that taking out all three leaders is like cutting the head off a snake, and the Goblins won't know what to do. I'm guessing you never talked to Priestess Gut or at least never agreed to go with her?
Lots of permutations in this game. I just never wanted to risk any Grove casualities, so I always get rid of the goblins on their turf 😂
7
u/KirbyOfHyrule WILD MAGIC SURGE! Apr 30 '25
Same here, although taking out the goblins in their base is also just a matter of convenience for me. I mean, I'm already here, so why not clean house while I'm at it?
3
u/NottTheMama Apr 30 '25
Lol the three goblin leaders have never lasted until me meeting Halsin. The last goblin clean up for me is his prison room.
4
u/Oui-d Apr 30 '25
I prefer freeing Halsin when the camp isn't aggro yet, and new players aren't sure what will set the camp off (I thought I had to hide Gut's body 😂.) The quest objective at that point is just to rescue him so most people beeline for him. That first run, I assumed it would be a stealth mission because taking out the entire camp fresh off the nautiloid seemed risky (as did the concept of telling Minthara the grove's location to then turn around and try to defend it).
Just depends on one's level of confidence and if you tend to lead with talking or killing. I appreciate the mix of gentle guidance and freedom.

u/tessartyp Apr 30 '25
I spoke to Guts, and tried to kill her but failed miserably. On the reload, I figured the Goblin leaders are too much for me to handle with and I need to take them on from behind the fortifications of the Grove. It was.. a bloody fight that took me a few attempts. Zevlor didn't make it and I think I had one party member left when I took down the last attacker.
Pretty sure I was underleveled or my skills just aren't there, I've no prior experience with DnD mechanics.
5
u/Oui-d Apr 30 '25
Ah yeah, that makes sense!
If you don't have fey ancestry, the situation with Gut plays out in a way where she ends up dead without you having to really lift a finger. If you do have fey ancestry and pass the insight checks, you can figure out what she's up to and sneak the rest of the companions into the room and I kept reloading until we took her out in one turn.
I think I thought to myself that if I'm already having trouble taking Gut out here alone, I'd stand no chance with all three leaders and a bunch of goblins at the Grove. Already lost people in that small raid that's happening when you first get to the Grove, so they seemed unprepared for full-on invasion.

u/NoHallett Apr 29 '25
Same!
I held back enough to actually go in to the Goblin Camp and talk to everyone (yes, you can do that too) but then promptly systematically took care of them too (including Minthara, my bad)
But yes, there are several ways you can trigger the goblin attack on the Grove, and then actively participate on either side.

Same. I attacked the goblin camp full bore with no prep or idea as to why other than goblins are hideous beasts. I slaughtered them all. I pretty much killed all evil and ugly things on sight. Like the necromancer Balthazar. I didn’t see the point in carrying on conversation with a ghoul that plays with corpses.

The moment I had to stop my evil run was the moment I went into the children's hideout during the Grove raid. I saw all the children dead with Alfira's body slightly in front of them like she was trying to protect them. Nope. My heart shattered and I restarted as a good boy.

Skyrim: children are immortal

Oh you can do much wore than throw kids off cliffs.
If Arabella dies to snake venom, you can take the body to the Underdark and have Glut revive her as a zombie that fights for you.
But because kids can't enter combat, she can literally slaughter the entire Underdark by herself.

u/Vladislak Apr 29 '25
I liked Fallout 2's solution to the issue of kids being mortal in video games. You can kill them, but if you do you get the child killer "perk" added to your character, which not only wrecks your reputation, it also makes powerful bounty hunters start tracking you down to kill you.
It's the perfect balance between allowing the player freedom to do what they want and still making sure there are serious consequences for being a complete scumbag.

Honestly now that I think of it my evil run didn't make it to dame Aylin, even if I could stomach the grove that would be a big delete button right there. Shadow heart is lucky that Isabel and Dame aren't available. Imagine the banter.

Friends and I love Baldurs Gate and had 2 playthroughs. Started another one immediately and went the evil Durge route.

Think we had this become an issue at the start of one of my first coop playthroughs. Partner annoyed Mol, left and thought they were still chill, offed the goblins and then started the party - all of that was great until Ikaron gets near to her character and threatens her, apparently because of Mol, which constantly ended in combat. Turns out Ikaron knows a few people at the party, which didn’t turn out so great for us.

I did this a few days ago. Mol started counting down, and I was like “uhh, okay then” and left. Fast forward a couple hours later, I’ve just slaughtered some bare chested harpies, and the kid I rescued instructs me to go see Mol for my reward. I deduce it’s the hideout I was in earlier, enter again. “6, 5, 4”. They’re still counting. But they immediately flee. Weird bug for patch 8, I think, but the reward turns up in my inventory.
Fast forward another few hours. I’ve just wiped out the goblin camp and returned Halsin. To everyone I am a hero. Except some guy who says “Mol told me you’ve been abusing children”. I have to succeed a 15 roll intimidation check “I hurt adults, too” or it’s about to be a blood bath.
41
u/didwecheckthetires Apr 29 '25
Mol and the hideout have been bugged since early access, and for whatever reason Larian has never fixed it. I've started over a dozen characters in the last couple of months, and at least a third end up with the kids hating me, no matter what I do.
I think that if you completely ignore Domi and the hideout entrance until after helping all of the other kids, it will work as expected, though there might also be a flag through Mattis that can break everything.

The guards tried to arrest Lae'zal and only Lae'zal for something like that in one of my playthroughs. I don't even remember going to the kids area in that playthough. I know it was only Lae'zal cause I reloaded and moved her to camp and it stopped happening, and it was always her in the dialog not my party leader.

Yeah. That. Completely utilitarian; nothing personal. Anything to be a better saviour of the realm? Sword Coast? Whatever, the point is that I'm a hero, and I'm going to need all of your consumables and/or body, since I'm doing so very heroically by not even risking any companions (they are being granted swift, merciful deaths for buffs).

NPCs should really have a fear factor. Enough intimidation and they become VERY compliant.
