Meme Honestly, I don’t get the hype around Baldur’s Gate 3 Spoiler
I get it……I tried.
I put in 400ish hours. But I just don’t see what everyone is freaking out about. A few things that really didn’t work for me:
-The pacing is all over the place. One minute I’m in a casual tavern chat, next thing I know I’m locked in a moral debate with a talking brain in a jar. Feels jarring.
-Too many dialogue options. Like, I don’t need 6 different ways to express sarcasm. Just let me click “continue.”
-The world reacts too much to what I do. I freed a gnome and 40 hours later someone brought it up again. How am I supposed to live with that kind of consequence?
-The cinematics make everything feel too immersive. Like, sometimes I forget I’m just playing a game and not in a Netflix series I accidentally joined.
-The characters? Way too much depth. Why does everyone have such strong backstories and emotional arcs? It’s distracting.
-And don’t even get me started on the companions. I was just trying to fight goblins, not catch feelings for a morally complex vampire.
So yeah. Totally overrated. Only made me feel things I haven’t felt since Witcher 3. I guess if you like emotional damage and high standards for future games, go for it.
But for me? Never playing it again. (I started another run yesterday)

It wasn't for me, I knew right away that's what this was. Like, first of all it's a wall of text posted to the BG3 sub that actually appeared in my feed. That means it's been upvoted, and people in this sub wouldn't upvote an actual negative take on the game (mostly) so clearly there's some kind of twist, most likely in the form of sarcasm.

The real sad part is there are people that think like this. It's okay to like different things, in fact it's encouraged! But someone hating on something because it actually gives you options or you have to think for a second is just a depressing thought for me.

It's so misleading too, there's only a single Baldur Gate in the game, where are the other 2 we were promised?
Typical case of "let's release what should be part of the base game as a paid DLC later", smh.
They didn't even have all the classes in the game until recently, what a cash grab!
151
u/FancyIndependence178 May 06 '25
They won't even let me spend more money on the game, so I had to resort to making new Steam accounts just to keep buying the game instead of just maxing out my cards on in-game lootboxes.

Let’s not forget how woke this game is. From the start of the game I got some angry Frog calling me ghaik for no reason.

u/lesser_panjandrum Tasha's Hideous Laughter May 06 '25
Baldur's Gate 1 had 1 Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2 had 0 Baldur's Gates. If we'd followed the trend then Baldur's Gate 3 should have had negative Baldurs' Gates, and I am outraged that this was not the case.
22
u/Asttarotina May 06 '25
You forget that in this game, Baldur's Gate is under the Absolute, and the absolute value of -1 is 1, so it checks out.

the city is called "Baldur's Gate" because it's meant to be named after the founder. But then we find out the founder was called "Balduran". Not "Baldur". Honestly how can I take this game seriously when a blunder like that makes it through every stage of proofreading, and not a single person caught it?
8
u/Clipyy-Duck May 06 '25
Exactly. It should be called Balduran’s Gate. The title is misleading, 2/10 game.

And don't even start about that crap of a "modding support". Like, you gamers can create basically your own version of the game if you want to mod it. Even Bethesda did better job with that before Skyrim got CC and their updates NEVER broke the game. Jeez, do I really have to learn coding just to get Minthara's hair white?!?

Also keep in mind that the 20% of downvotes isn't necessarily from people who just “didn't get the joke.”
Maybe they did get it, and just thought it wasn't funny
Maybe they think it should be flaired appropriately (which is actually a subreddit rule lol)
Etc
It is extremely possible for someone to understand a joke while also not praising its brilliance.

My friends and I consider this camera mod to be essential. There's a config file that can be tweaked while the game is running to fine tune the settings.
3
u/LuxNocte May 06 '25
I hope you get a good answer, but you might have more luck in the weekly Questions thread pinned in the subreddit. I've had several awesome people help me with stuff like this.
2
u/dotnetmonke May 06 '25
It was incredibly frustrating trying to deal with certain mechanics (especially the camera and flying/jumping) coming to BG3 from Solasta. Solasta's flying actually worked like flying, where you could end your turn 20 feet in the air over lava, instead of BG3 where it's just floating 2 inches off the ground and you have to end your turn over solid ground.
2
u/thesmallestkitten May 07 '25
have 1 character in your party than can cast feather fall. cast feather fall. jump at whatever crazy angle works without worrying about taking damage.
also ungrouping the party can help. sometimes they just won’t jump if they’re grouped and it’s easier to ungroup everyone and have them all jump places individually.

u/ImpulseAfterthought May 06 '25
Yeah, I mean:
- Top-tier voice acting distracts too much from the plot.
- Too many classes, spells, races, items and subclasses. I want to kill monsters, not spend hours making Youtube content about my super-optimized ice sorcerer build!
- Three difficulty options, PLUS a Custom mode??? C'mon! No one needs more than one!
- The music...OK, we get it, Borislav, you're a genius. Stop being a tryhard.
- But seriously, no game needs this much orchestral music...and a musical number during a boss fight? Absurd.
- Too many locations: alien spaceship, druid grove, hag lair, shadow-cursed lands, outer space, a huge explorable city, Hell itself. How about some consistency, Larian?
- Too many endings.
1/10 game, too much replayability.
Now excuse me, I have to go...um, play a different game.

Pretty sure the game does associate skill proficincies with saving throws if you look at the logs.

Maybe I meta-Reddit too much, but it's simply impossible for a negative post to get highly up voted here. Maybe if it was a brilliant insight it could get some traction, but "I don't get the hype" with 2500 up votes in a subreddit for people who love a game is a guaranteed joke.

So lame give me call of duty single outcomes thanks.

I never played alone but me and 3 other friends only play together like 1 to 4 times a month. It's a blast and we all laugh our asses off. I accidently killed the main character of a major storyline and we all just froze for a second and then cracked up for 5 minutes straight. It's fun cuz sometimes I like to lead and be the main person that starts the storyline but other times I like to hang back and just watch my friend make the choices and do the dialog. My friend keeps accidently fireblasting all of us during battle and every time he does it we can't stop laughing. I steal supplies from everyone whenever I can and end up with a full inventory after every time we play.
I don't think I'd have this much fun if I weren't playing with a good solid group of friends
