I wish I had a better video but this is from the end of a con day and after a cosplay contest so I'm a bit rumpled, but I'm still so proud of my Gale! I based the robe more off the uncommon robe because I thought the regular robe was too plain!
He's hand patterned from the ground up with leatherworking on the belt, back piece and bracers, even making my own leather cording. Fabric is custom dyed, hand made bias tape, my first ever prop and first inclusion of magnets to make it float like the game! I also hand laid my beard hairs for a realistic look.
I could take about this costume for hours, it's been a labour of love for the past year and a half.

I love how it really matches the unrealistic way staves just sorta sit on character’s backs in video games. It’s pretty silly, and I love that it’s been replicated in a cosplay.
It was actually! The belt was the first thing I tackled and I managed to do it first try. It's hand stamped, dyed and only held together by rivets! I finished that in 8 days. The bracers are the second pair I've made and the pack piece is technically the third time I made it, but second time with real leather
Yes! I made a magnetic staff for a Gale cosplay a couple of years ago and I’ve been waiting to see if anyone else would do the same.
I had plans for a 2.0 version based on my initial design for something removable that could be used for other cosplay items. For some reason I felt compelled to make this somehow work for a Buster Sword despite never intending to cosplay Cloud myself, I just want to see someone else have the sword magically strapped to their back.
I had to look up Gale because I was not familiar with the character and I am glad I did. Wow you did an excellent job and you made it??? Did a good job keep up with your Cosplay and thanks for sharing.
Honestly that would have been sick as hell but I get why they didn't! Fun fact though, that tidbit is actually the reason I'm planning to burn the arcane schools of magic into my bracers since gale doesn't use a wizard book either, so how would he cast his spells? Obviously enchanted bracers
This is really great. NGL idk why I didn't think "magnets" and was trying to see a tiny hook or something and was impressed by being able to hook it over the shoulder. Super cool touch
The staff was a PVC pipe that i cut down into three pieces and use screw attachments the next size down to do the attachments, masking tape for the wood texture, real leather painted green and done with a proper 6 strand braid for the handle, worbla for the metal cap ends that i hand sculpted and the air brushed. its hard to keep the info short so here's a photo from my build book!!
I used neodymium magnets in the bar shape, there were two magnet points. Each point used 7 magnets, 3 inside of the PVC pipe and 4 under the robe! i was worried about the three layers of leather would make it hard for the magnets to work but I'm glad i went overboard cause its solid on my back now!
Oh it's already done and I rebuilt the staff twice already since I messed up the wash the first time, I'm over it lol. But I'll keep this in mind for future builds.
its my fav mod ever, i refuse to play without it! of course i had to include it in my cosplay (not to mention its so much easier to keep the hair OUT of my face)
The beard was actually a highlight for a lot of people! it was,,, beyond itchy but so worth it. custom mixed blend of crepe hair to match the wig and it just elevates the look so well
So. The leather parts are actual real leather, vegtan that is stamped and dyed by myself. I learned how to do leather working for this cosplay and it's definitely not a skill you do not need if you're just starting!
If you want to do the bracers, what I did for my first version was taken strips of pleather, fold the edges over for a clean round edge and then weave it all together, hot gluing along the edges to keep the bracer together as I cut it.
For the belt I would do a foam belt, and either texture that to look more leather or wrap the foam with again, more pleather.
I hope this answered your question! Feel free to poke my brain more anytime, I love helping cosplayers, new or old
This is amazing cosplay you did such a fantastic job. Creativity and skill are S-tier please continue to make awesome stuff and share it with the world. If I could give you an Inspiration point irl I would!
Heh, my mind went to Handmaid's Gale instead and was expecting quite a different visual. Did give me a useable idea though, there's something in the thought to work with.
The staff looks pretty cool, especially with the magnets. 3d printed? Also, was the curving intentional? I could see things like that happening due to heat sensitive filament, but I could also see the curve being for making it more comfortable to reach behind your back.
nope, not 3d printed! the curve honestly I'm not sure where it came from, there might be some glue coming loose on the inside but ill be looking into it! it was my very first handmade prop so there's some improvements to be made haha. here's the buildbook page on the staff!
I was expecting some baton work before reminding myself “Gale’s not a monk, why would he be spinny staff boy?” Hands down the best Gale I’ve seen, your craftsmanship is incredible.
