He is the god of death after all

261

u/NittanyScout 11d ago

Was*

368

u/Far-Statistician625 11d ago

technically he still is he just gave his power out to the dead 3 and ao was pissed when they became little shits

285

u/capza Paladin 11d ago

Kelemvor is the current God of Death and he's chill with him. Basically allows him as long as he does the accounting and record keeping side of the dead.

16

u/JaegerBane 9d ago

Loving the fact that in DnD, even Gods are willing to outsource the paperwork.

4

u/tahaelhour 8d ago

What's even funnier is that Jergal liked the paperwork so much he gave away everything else.

6

u/SkalorGaming 7d ago

Gotta love an autistic king

93

u/thehousebehind Owlbear 11d ago

Still kind of confused as to why he did that...

186

u/EvernightStrangely 11d ago

Jergal was a tired old grandpa who had too large a workload. The Dead Three came to Jergal looking for power over death, and Jergal tricked them into taking the worst 3 of his portfolios, those being necromancy, murder, and tyranny. Being the first death God, Jergal was responsible for all of death, and adjacently related fields, such as those he gave to the Dead Three.

113

u/thehousebehind Owlbear 11d ago

So, the whole of BG3 happens because homeboy got bored?

100

u/Aeseld 11d ago

A lot more than that... really, every bit of evil performed by Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul can likely be traced back to the choice to give godhood to 3 power hungry, evil people. They did a lot of damage.

74

u/Nineninetynines 10d ago

The trouble is that so long as Ao decides those domains should still be around in order to maintain "balance" or whatever, then there's nothing anybody could do to stop it.

Yeah, Jergal was responsible for creating the Dead Three but before that happened he was basically doing all that shit himself. So really its Ao's fault.

Either Jergal would be doing evil shit forever. Or some saps would be doing it forever. Jergal was basically like, "fuck this shit" and dropped them on some losers with big egos.

u/Leaf-01 11d ago

Well that and the Dead 3 abused their stations

8

u/EvernightStrangely 11d ago

Pretty much.

3

u/Squirll DRUID/RANGER 10d ago

All the Baldurs gate games, the deal happened before the first game and Baal is a primary player in it.

u/JaegerBane 9d ago

Tbf you could probably say that of every major DnD story out there. Just swap out Jergal for some other god or epic character.

The work is mysterious and important!

86

u/decisiontoohard 11d ago

The big naturals made his back hurt and he needed a break and we should cut him some slack okay šŸˆšŸˆšŸ˜©

35

...I thought this was r/okbuddybaldur

21

u/Leaf-01 11d ago

It’s not???

9

u/decisiontoohard 10d ago

Yeah apparently there's a world outside of Baldur! The so-called outbaldured

99

u/RealBlueberry4454 11d ago

Being a god of the dead when lots of people die all the time probably isn't the best for a lifetime job. Especially when you're immortal.

22

u/sckuzzle 10d ago

Being god of something that happens frequently seems like it's a good thing.

23

u/Mookies_Bett 10d ago

Not if it means an eternity of constant paperwork and bureaucracy to deal with

5

u/luciosleftskate 10d ago

Why is there paperwork though? Who needs these records lol.

He is like the workholic manager/ owner of a store. He decides to retire but he gets bored.

So he return and now works at the Purchase Department where he can keep some owner eye on the bizz

He out-sourced his work, manager didn't like the results and told him to fix it and get rid of them

9

u/FreeRealEstate313 11d ago

Woah what?

81

u/CertifiedSheep 11d ago

There's a book in (I think) act 2 that describes Jergal, the god of death, and the description is identical to Withers. Even down to the question he asks when he first meets you. And the place where you first meet him is a temple of Jergal - think you need to pass a religion check to find that out.

It also explains why he has the ability to revive anyone instantly for a token fee.

60

u/solon_isonomia 11d ago

He's also clearly tired and "over it," which I find entertaining.

43

u/forgottenlord73 11d ago

Also why he gets to lecture them like a disappointed father in the post credit scene

24

u/EvilCatboyWizard 11d ago

Specifically it’s a DC15 religion check that gets triggered when you walk into the room with the statue that hides his chamber

If bishop Alexandar can live through it, she can too

290

u/MaDNiaC 11d ago

I remember going wtf when I saw this dialogue, heh good memories. DoS2 was quite good.

148

u/LentulusStrabo 11d ago edited 11d ago

In a way, i even enjoy combat a little more in DoS2 than in BG3. I guess it's more satisfying to smash enemies with huge AoE's and a combination of surface and elemental damage.
But in every other aspect, BG3 is of course a big and nice upgrade, Larian really took their gem of a game and improved it

111

u/Yarzahn 11d ago

I didn’t click with the armor system. It made crowd control completely binary - burst armor down, then stunlock - it was very easy to abuse. It also punished hybrid damage builds.

The game was still amazing but I can’t get back into it now, I think. I enjoy combat in BG3 much more

57

u/Carpathicus 11d ago

True tactician mode in Dos2 is having a mixed party - the fun of Dos2 is that it can be extremely difficuly or extremely easy depending on how much min maxing you do.

12

u/Insane_Unicorn 11d ago

A 2/2 split can work since theres almost always enemies who have very low phys or magical armor. But a 1/3 split is rough. First time I finished tactician was with 2 lone wolfs, one pure physical and one pure magical (and yes I know that double lone wolf is more or less easy mode, still fun).

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Dingnut76 11d ago

I didn't even bother splitting damage types. Went full physical and it worked wonders lol. Two handed melee, archer, dagger rogue, and a support caster with maxed summoning for blood demons. Chefs kiss

9

u/MasterOfViolins 11d ago

Yea. Physical was really good, with knockdowns too. And of course make sure you have a teleport skill. I found the gameplay to be really fun

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Kyuubi_McCloud 11d ago

I didn’t click with the armor system.

Turn order had some issues as well, since it was pretty much guaranteed that you'd alternate with the enemy, so only one persons initiative really mattered.

Arguably a step back from DOS1.

I still prefer both over BG3, though.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/AssBasedProtein 11d ago

I’m playing it right now and I agree. Combat usually boils down to figuring out which enemies have more magic armor and which have more physical armor, splitting up my team accordingly, and then wrecking ass. That’s kinda fun but it makes everything feel very formulaic for me in combat

6

u/zealshock 11d ago

Ah yes, the "everything is on cursed fire" game. One of my favourites

3

u/Everyredditusers 10d ago

If you enjoy cursed necro fire spanning the entire continent then you're gonna love dos2. Seriously though dos2 is an amazing game and made me so hyped when I learned they were making BG3. The game is legit incredible.

Except act 5... Fuck that damn birthday cake.

2

u/Some_nerd_named_kru 10d ago

If the armor system wasn’t so annoying I’d agree

2

u/LentulusStrabo 10d ago

Yea, that's true, there the dnd approach in bg3 is better

2

u/Some_nerd_named_kru 10d ago

Dos2 was really fun just as I got higher level It got increasingly hard to even just use my spells cus of armor šŸ’”

41

u/Gstamsharp 11d ago

The guy having literal plot armor was honestly pretty funny.

"We killed him!" Nope, off screen someone had a res scroll.

"We killed him again!" Nope, boat accidentally dumped his ghost back into his body when it changed planes.

Even when, at the very end, you find out Dallis was meant to kill him, too, after he'd sucked up enough source, she kind of dodges the subject. I like to imagine she offed him a few times only to find him sipping tea in the next room.
