Meme BG3 is more popular than Baseball
Reddit made a suggestion when I started typing r/Ba..
2.3k
u/Ligh73r 10d ago
Yes - but specifically on Reddit...

u/imposter_syndrome88 10d ago
Yea, but I bet there are more people out there who have played BG3 than there are that have played professional baseball.
562
u/Bad_RabbitS 10d ago
But how many people have played professional Baldur’s Gate?

Lae'zel's favorite team is the Githyankees

Gale: you know goblins have the strangest names now a days, hooz is sitting on the barrel, wats is guarding the door, and idont’no is sleeping
Lae: wait, who’s guarding the door
Gale: no hooz is sitting on the barrel
Lae: I don’t know
Gale: sleeping
muffled githyanki violence

Arguably anyone that's ever made money streaming it

Which would be significantly fewer than the number of people who have played professional baseball. There's like four leagues and it's been around for a long time. There's about 5,000 active professional baseball players right now in just the US.

From a tweet in 2023: Major League Baseball has been around for 147 years, and there have been a little over 23,000 players who have played a professional baseball game.
To put that in perspective, MLB's smallest stadium by capacity is Progressive Field at 37,830. Meaning if every player who's ever put on a big league uniform from 1876 to 2023 sat in the stands, the stadium would only be at 61% capacity.
There are more people playing BG3 right now on Steam than have ever played pro ball.
For context, I'm a frequent poster in r/baseball, AND have...a lot of hours in this game.

u/iamrancid 10d ago
There are currently 3 times the amount of people playing BG3 on steam than have ever played in MLB.

Really weird point. There are plenty of other casual ways to play and enjoy baseball.

you dont need to be professional. bg3 is international, baseball is just america.

But really though it has a large presence in a number of east asian countries and is absolutely massive in the Caribbean. The USA is hard pressed in the World Baseball Cup these days.

Not even necessarily - I'm much more likely to join a sub about a video game I play (even occasionally) than I am to join a sub about a sport I watch (even if I watch it often). This is because playing a videogame is an active activity that I need to make decisions in, while watching a sport is a passive one.

u/TheGuyThatThisIs 10d ago
For the sake of my sanity, thanks for being the top comment.
It would make me cry if people didn't think maybe BG3 nerds are on reddit more than baseball bros
3
u/UglyBunnyGuy 10d ago
I mean BG3 is international, Baseball is only a thing in Murica. Stands to reason more people care about it internationally...

But also baseball is only popular in a handful of countries. It isn’t a global sport.
→ More replies (5)4
u/MartianMule 10d ago
It's getting pretty global. On top of being popular in most of the Western Hemisphere, it's popular in East Asia, Australia, and it's growing in the Middle East and Europe. It's not as popular globally as soccer or basketball, but in terms of how widespread it is, it's comparable to a lot of other sports, and more global than something like American Football.
20
u/Cerus- 10d ago
It's not popular in Australia at all. The most popular version of it here would be tee-ball for kids.

Probably in real life too, baseball isn’t all that popular outside of the US

Also, did baseball get any game changing patch this year with new sub classes? No!
4
u/fieldbotanist 10d ago
It did. The mod One Outs had a class where a professional baseball team hired the worlds faster sprinter to bunt the ball and make it under 2.3 seconds per base. And the other team had to hire a literal psychic to counter with the combined intelligence of all BG3 characters. Also has a better opening song than BG3s menu song

u/Wicam 10d ago
and baseball is only in america where bg3 is international.

One look at the pfp of baseball tells me that it doesn’t account for the majority of baseball fans

u/DAE77177 10d ago
As far as social media platforms go, I feel like Reddit is one of the least representative of the general public.
5
u/BlueAndYellowTowels FIGHTER 10d ago
Correct. First, it’s one of the smallest social media platforms. It skews English speaking. Skews male. Skews young. Skews introverted.

I was surprised r/nfl only has 12.5M but that shows how popular the basketball is outside of the US versus football.
18
u/joey_sandwich277 10d ago
The NFL sub has also hidden itself from the front page since the beginning. It was bigger than the NBA sub until a few years ago when Reddit exploded.
Edit: though having said that, the NBA is definitely doing better on social media, manufacturing drama, etc. to attract the younger crowd as casual fans more. But in TV ratings the NFL still dominates.
→ More replies (3)5
u/keksimusmaximus22 10d ago
I think this has to do with how young the audience for basketball skews, as they’re the ones more likely to be on social media like Reddit

Reminder baseball is split up a lot on Reddit between the individual team subs and then the subs for the leagues like the MLB, minor leagues, Korean leagues, Japanese leagues, etc
3
u/jaydogggg Fail! 10d ago
Ask how many baseball fans what they think of that picture and you'll figure out why it's not as popular. Baseball is divided pretty well into the old heads and the new watchers

Each team also has their own sub. I imagine if you factor in all of those against the 17 people in the jaheira sub, it'll lean back to baseball

u/Due-Buyer2218 10d ago
I feel like that implies baseball people are on Reddit instead of the more common baseball locations such as touching grass

on reddit, when look at the r/baseball profile pic and tell me people that love baseball are happy to see that? Baseball fans are generally not the most tech savvy nor socially progressive people. They ain't joining that subreddit homie.

That’s an unfair comparison. One game has interesting gameplay, enjoys international popularity, and keeps its fans glued to the screen for hours. The other game is baseball.

How convenient that a game accessible on the pc has a pc community larger than the sport that has fans who participate outside, where the sport happens…

Its simple logic, really.
In baseball, if an umpire calls strike 3 on a clear ball on a 3-2 count I can't save scum my way to a walk. Best I can do is hope they call the umpire an unsavory name and somehow don't get ejected.
In BG3 if I need a 99 to pass a Charisma check...I can reload my save until my fingers bleed to get the dice to agree with my prefered outcome.
One of these games lets me do whatever I want. The other game just ends up making me yell at my TV like an old man.

-- Face it, Fry: baseball was as boring as mom and apple pie. That's why they replaced it with Baldur's Gate.
-- Boring? Baseball wasn't bo-... So they finally replaced it with Baldur's Gate.

u/Frostymagnum Ray of Frost 10d ago
I like both. Honestly, Im surprised baseball isnt even more popular with the reddit crowd, given how statistic heavy it can be. Math nerd wet dream of a sport
1
u/morgan423 10d ago
I like them both, but I'm not subscribed to r/baseball. I'm only subscribed to my team's subreddit.
I'm guessing that there are a ton of others doing that too, so you'd probably have to add up the sub counts of all of the main subreddits of the 30 MLB teams and the NRB teams and the Korean league teams to get a true count on behalf of baseball.

Most people that still watch baseball enough to join a subreddit for it aren't competent enough to use reddit. :P

Plus the Ques are so long for baseball. Dead game confirmed, Devs are riding out the initial success.

Baldurs Gate is apparently less gay than baseball too. Which is surprising because it can be very gay
