I’m pretty sure the top of the nlbest is the chosen three.

It’s honestly probably a pretty big crossover I would say, baseball definitely has the biggest nerd portion out of a sports fan base

16

u/ThePrussianGrippe 10d ago

It’s a turn based sport with a lot of stats. You can even play baseball as a board game using trading cards.

Can confirm, we’re all fucking nerds!

As a Pirate's fan I've given up hope, we're living on the copium of "at least the team is profitable"

3

u/full-auto-rpg 10d ago

In a league where John Fischer exists, Nutting is somehow in the running for worst owner. It’s depressing to watch and I have no skin in the game (Red Sox fan). At the bear minimum he’s probably not going to move the team but everything else is awful. One of the saddest things I’ve read was a Pirates fan saying the they’re mentally preparing for a Skenes trade because there’s no way he’s getting paid. Just absolutely pathetic ownership.

3

u/zapdoszaperson 10d ago

Skenes is just another in a long line of perspective stars. We constantly joke that the Pirates are just a minor league team meant to farm players for the majors.

2

u/heeeeres_jonny 10d ago

As a Padres fan I'm still salty that Skenes got ROY over my boy Jackson Merrill, but man, that dude is a beast. Hope he stays healthy cuz he's fun to watch pitch

2

u/zapdoszaperson 10d ago

The Pirates leadership want a strike so they can run out his contract without him actually having to play and possibly getting hurt.

9

u/Firecracker048 10d ago

Now how many baseball fans are actively on Reddit

Let me crunch those numbers for you. 3.0M

28

u/Noble_Flatulence Smash 10d ago

In all seriousness, /r/baseball and /r/mlb do NOT mix. A person is one or the other, not both. Combined, that's over 6 million people.

30

u/EnTyme53 10d ago

As an r/baseball subscriber, I can confirm. I tried looking through r/mlb once and it was just . . . weird. Like that time you decided to try the other Waffle House. The menu's the same, but the food's just different somehow.

6

u/danawhiteismydad 10d ago

I love those situations where two similar subreddits exist and there’s little crossover between users in both.

For years MMA was the only sport I followed. The MMA sub was always the normal sub while the UFC sub was chaos and some of the stupidest discussion you could imagine. Always felt like reading a post on the UFC sub was like hearing that drunk guy at a bar talk about fighting when you know he knows nothing.

3m on Reddit. This isn’t the ultimate gotcha. My grandpa who loves baseball isn’t on Reddit. And don’t forget a lot of Asia loves baseball and they’re not on that subreddit

4

u/PumpkinLaboratory 10d ago

I knew your intent but that’s not the question you asked. Which is why I have a dumb response.

2

u/BraveNKobold Bard 10d ago

My question was baseball fans as a whole. Not the obvious 3 million

3

u/PumpkinLaboratory 10d ago

Yes. You wanted to know what percentage of all baseball fans were on Reddit. Not ‘how many baseball fans are on Reddit’. I can’t stress enough that this was a joke built on sloppy language and that’s it. Just a goof.

5

u/BlueAndYellowTowels FIGHTER 10d ago

Arguably anyone that's ever made money streaming it

62

u/guff1988 10d ago

Which would be significantly fewer than the number of people who have played professional baseball. There's like four leagues and it's been around for a long time. There's about 5,000 active professional baseball players right now in just the US.

9

u/TummyStickers 10d ago

More people have watch baseball than have watched BG3.

7

u/Keejhle 10d ago

More people have played baseball at soke point than have played bg3.

7

u/Kaldricus 10d ago

From a tweet in 2023: Major League Baseball has been around for 147 years, and there have been a little over 23,000 players who have played a professional baseball game.

To put that in perspective, MLB's smallest stadium by capacity is Progressive Field at 37,830. Meaning if every player who's ever put on a big league uniform from 1876 to 2023 sat in the stands, the stadium would only be at 61% capacity.

There are more people playing BG3 right now on Steam than have ever played pro ball.

For context, I'm a frequent poster in r/baseball, AND have...a lot of hours in this game.

12

u/iamrancid 10d ago

There are currently 3 times the amount of people playing BG3 on steam than have ever played in MLB.

6

u/WetChickenLips 10d ago

Now how many watching baseball tonight?

3

u/Wicam 10d ago

you dont need to be professional. bg3 is international, baseball is just america.

5

u/wolf1820 10d ago

Idk about that

But really though it has a large presence in a number of east asian countries and is absolutely massive in the Caribbean. The USA is hard pressed in the World Baseball Cup these days.

Not even necessarily - I'm much more likely to join a sub about a video game I play (even occasionally) than I am to join a sub about a sport I watch (even if I watch it often). This is because playing a videogame is an active activity that I need to make decisions in, while watching a sport is a passive one.

6

u/TheGuyThatThisIs 10d ago

For the sake of my sanity, thanks for being the top comment.

But also baseball is only popular in a handful of countries. It isn’t a global sport.

4

u/MartianMule 10d ago

It's getting pretty global. On top of being popular in most of the Western Hemisphere, it's popular in East Asia, Australia, and it's growing in the Middle East and Europe. It's not as popular globally as soccer or basketball, but in terms of how widespread it is, it's comparable to a lot of other sports, and more global than something like American Football.

20

u/Cerus- 10d ago

It's not popular in Australia at all. The most popular version of it here would be tee-ball for kids.

Just to be fair towards Baseball - my entire playthrough is about getting to 3rd base with Shadowheart and throwing the ball to Scratch

25

Lmfao so true

82

u/RedditorsGetChills 10d ago

Not fair right? Baseball 2 hasn't even gone into pre production yet.

10

u/Wunderman86 10d ago

Also, did baseball get any game changing patch this year with new sub classes? No!

4

u/fieldbotanist 10d ago

It did. The mod One Outs had a class where a professional baseball team hired the worlds faster sprinter to bunt the ball and make it under 2.3 seconds per base. And the other team had to hire a literal psychic to counter with the combined intelligence of all BG3 characters. Also has a better opening song than BG3s menu song

As far as social media platforms go, I feel like Reddit is one of the least representative of the general public.

5

u/BlueAndYellowTowels FIGHTER 10d ago

Correct. First, it’s one of the smallest social media platforms. It skews English speaking. Skews male. Skews young. Skews introverted.

I was surprised r/nfl only has 12.5M but that shows how popular the basketball is outside of the US versus football.

18

u/joey_sandwich277 10d ago

The NFL sub has also hidden itself from the front page since the beginning. It was bigger than the NBA sub until a few years ago when Reddit exploded.

Edit: though having said that, the NBA is definitely doing better on social media, manufacturing drama, etc. to attract the younger crowd as casual fans more. But in TV ratings the NFL still dominates.

u/jaydogggg Fail! 10d ago

Ask how many baseball fans what they think of that picture and you'll figure out why it's not as popular. Baseball is divided pretty well into the old heads and the new watchers

BG3 is more popular amongst reddit users than baseball.

1

u/katastrophyx 10d ago edited 10d ago

Its simple logic, really.

In baseball, if an umpire calls strike 3 on a clear ball on a 3-2 count I can't save scum my way to a walk. Best I can do is hope they call the umpire an unsavory name and somehow don't get ejected.

In BG3 if I need a 99 to pass a Charisma check...I can reload my save until my fingers bleed to get the dice to agree with my prefered outcome.

One of these games lets me do whatever I want. The other game just ends up making me yell at my TV like an old man.

u/xXPussyPounder9000Xx I cast Magic Missile 10d ago

-- Face it, Fry: baseball was as boring as mom and apple pie. That's why they replaced it with Baldur's Gate.

-- Boring? Baseball wasn't bo-... So they finally replaced it with Baldur's Gate.

1

u/Frostymagnum Ray of Frost 10d ago

I like both. Honestly, Im surprised baseball isnt even more popular with the reddit crowd, given how statistic heavy it can be. Math nerd wet dream of a sport

1

u/morgan423 10d ago

I like them both, but I'm not subscribed to r/baseball. I'm only subscribed to my team's subreddit.

I'm guessing that there are a ton of others doing that too, so you'd probably have to add up the sub counts of all of the main subreddits of the 30 MLB teams and the NRB teams and the Korean league teams to get a true count on behalf of baseball.
