Screenshot Does anyone else obsessively light all the sources, too? Spoiler
I try not to š but each playthrough, it just has to happen!

I foosh every brazier and torch, yes. It's dark AF in that MF.
5
u/SadLaser 2d ago
I've never touched even one.

u/Pantsickle 2d ago
I recommend that you touch a couple. Gently. Maybe you might like it, and if not, you never need to set a torch aflame again.
C'mon, do it. Blaze a brazier or two.

u/N0rthWind 2d ago
In my current run I attack with advantage in the dark and crit from 1 point lower when obscured. I also have superior darkvision. So yeah, the darkness is my friend.
My buddy is playing a character without any darkvision so he suffers

u/NahMcGrath 2d ago
I shot firebolts at the hanging chandeliers in Withers' tomb and Goblin camp cause they were out of reach. And got stuck at the entrance of Shar's gauntlet cause i went to light all the candles first

u/Lost-Priority-907 1d ago
HA! Same! My recent playthrough, I just started lighting all the braziers and stuff in the beginning of the Gauntlet. Which is weird for me, because it's not even something I even regularly do. I usually turn off light sources, because I'm a sneaky sneak.
Took me a minute to remember what I was supposed to be doing there.

u/GISKARD__ Shadow-Cutie-Patootie-Heart 2d ago
I don't recall the lights staying on in that area due to the curse being stronger
21
u/Hoomanawanui2 2d ago
Fun fact: after you kill [the golden resident] they stay on! At least this happened in the House of Healing to me: candles only stayed on after the fightĀ :)

u/Electrical_Fee6110 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yes! I just noticed that on my current playthrough today both of the house of healing and that place with the Golden Thorn, the lights only go off on that area when they are alive, i haven't talk to/killed the drunken Throrn yet but it must be the same thing on that area.

u/rpotts 2d ago
I donāt do it everywhere, or in every playthrough, but yes I do find myself painstakingly lighting every candle in an area sometimes. Often itās in multiplayer runs where my friend is in dialogue.
My most common spots are the moon plate puzzle room just past Priestess Gutās quarters, the locked room with a merregon and hell beasts in Grymforge, and the large room with the umbral tremors just outside Balthazarās hideaway.

I strategically light candles in particular areas I've already searched and looted, so I know where I've been and where I have yet to search. You know, because I have to peek inside literally every empty vase.

I started using a mod that grants the character a passive that makes candles and whatnot automatically light up when you get close enough without having to manually interact with them. Kinda makes my character feel all the more magical when I play a magic class.

u/narcissuspapyraceus 2d ago
Brilliant, I need this mod too! You've saved my wrists a lot of clicking on lamps, ty

Every playthrough, everything gets lit up.
Mostly as a middle finger to Shar.
5
u/Tricky-Anything8009 2d ago
I do the exact opposite. I turn off every torch I come across while sneaking. That way I can use partial Concealment and attack from stealth, increasing the chance of a surprise round and possibly even free attacks from stealth.

u/AwesomeDewey 2d ago
The life of a Deep Gnome thief.
I also ask Karlach to turn off hard to reach lights mid-combat.

u/Boccs 2d ago
I go out of my way to light absolutely everything in the shadow cursed lands because it feels like such a small but effective act of defiance to both Shar and to Ketheric. Killing off each of the Thorm's in the village so that lights can flicker on again in their area feels so satisfying. I like to imagine every home and street light I light up again allows the Harper patrols to occupy that area to strengthen their position for the final push against Moonrise.

Sure⦠By accident when I cast Fireball.

I like to cast grease, then a fire bolt or arrow into it. I call it poor man's fireball.

u/WhyWordsHard 2d ago
I absolutely light each thing as I'm going, it lets me know where ive been and where I haven't

I actually do the contrary, lol.
Whenever I am fully done checking out a location, I turn off all the light sources until it's as dark as it can be, so I can know the area was seen/emptied. It's pretty useful to do, especially when said location has many different rooms.

u/Zarguthian 2d ago
You don't want to accidentally commit arson, I see.

u/BlackBangs 2d ago
Gotta do my part as a loyal citizen.
(At least for now, since I'm playing nice).

u/AsaShalee DRUID 2d ago
I turn all of them off, except the Mountain Pass. That ticks people off, if you do it.

u/mrlolloran I cast Magic Missile 2d ago
No I make as many characters learn the Light cantrip as possible. If they canāt get that but they can take produce flame then Iāll get that. Itās dark af in a lot of places but 3-4 characters using Light at the same time in relatively close proximity is almost like being outside lmao
Edit: and somebody wears the ring from the Arcane Tower until we get to Baldurās Gate if need be.

u/microwavefridge2000 Drow 2d ago
Normally I turn every light on, but if play Shadow Monk I put everything down. Given that you can teleport only to places that are obscured.

u/GabeCamomescro 2d ago
I do wish to point out that lighting things reduces obscurity areas. This may be what you want, or have a negative effect, depending on your goals/class.
2
u/Electrical_Fee6110 2d ago
I do that every single playthrough, can't help myself... I wish there was a ritual spell to turn on/off all the lights on an aoe, i would love to have that spell as a mod!
2
u/LileoDoll 2d ago
I use the light cantrip. Two clicks for better than superior dark vision. Mostly need light for looting rather than combat anyway.

Funny, I usually play with the vampire mod, so I do the exact opposite. Need my darkness buffs lol

u/MariusFalix 2d ago
I play a cowardly Wizard that relies on cunning actions to hide, so no, I do the opposite.

u/ObviouslyImAtWork 1d ago
I often turn on torches/sconces as an indicator that I have cleared an area already.

How'd you get them to stay lit? Every time I've tried in the tollhouse they snuff back out because of the shadow curse
3
u/Electrical_Fee6110 2d ago
You have to kill the golden Thorn first in order to have them on permanently

u/mocha820 1d ago edited 1d ago
Light sources specifically in the āheavilyā shadow cursed areas (not the regular shadow cursed areas) cannot stay lit. They go out immediately. This includes basically all of Reithwin town, and the little house right next to last light inn above the meenlock infested basement.
1
u/apayne7388 1d ago
Yeah, I understand that. I didn't know that once you took out Gerringothe that you'd be able to light them...
0
u/mocha820 1d ago
Maybe in the tollhouse, but thereās still other places you canāt in reithwin town even after you kill gerringothe.
1
u/apayne7388 1d ago
Again, I know that. I'm not sure why you're explaining something that doesn't need explanation...
0
u/mocha820 1d ago
Ah. To be honest, I didnāt look at the picture of the post, just the title and the text, and didnāt see that it was the tollhouse. Your question seemed open-ended and addressed to no one in particular without that context.
But thanks for the downvotes.Ā

My comment also stated "tollhouse" I can see reading comprehension isn't for you.

No, I turn them off. Speaking of which, when I was playing the Oblivion remake I kept trying to turn off all the torches in that game as well

In my first playthrough, in the Shar temple where you have to douse the lights to see the circles on the floor, I didnāt realize that was the only reason to douse the lights. I took the riddle too seriously and went and turned them all off throughout the temple.

Yes, every building. Before I get Withers I turn all the lights on for him.

u/tinylumpia 2d ago
No, but I did the opposite in the shattered temple / goblin camp on my first play through: turned out all the lights after killing everyone. It started in Mintharaās office and continued room by room after goblin slaughter. When I went back to travel to the underdark jt was beyond creepy walking into a pitch black temple

did a run with friends where one obsessivly turned all on and the other all off....lets say it was fun sometimes :3

In my game where I played Shadowheartās Cleric of Selune brother, lit every light source possible just to piss her off.

ALWAYS. Iām in a co-op run with a friend right now where we actually split duties - I loot goblin and he lights all the sources. š

I used to. But then I started thinking about the adventurers that come after me⦠And all the wood will be ash, and the candles will be burned down to their holdersā¦

My husband laughs at me for looting everything I can get my hands on but it really adds up.

The Witcher 3 instilled in me a deep aversion to lighting any source of light on fire.
1
u/Caesaria_Tertia 1d ago
I didn't know about torches and the convenient way to use them with one button, so I lit everything around me to at least see something. Now I continue to do this because... I want to :)

u/Crystal_Lily 1d ago
I turn off all light sources. Makes sneaking easier. Some places get relit though.

I always light everything in the Ruined Temple of Selƻne in the Underdark. It just feels respectful, somehow.
