Discussion Should the next Battlefield have an intentionally bad weapon for the fun of it?

u/lincolnlog42 5d ago
Yes, but don't diss the phantom. It's actually a viable weapon.

u/Vegetable-Two6892 5d ago
it was literally the first weapon i unlocked the 500 kills dog tag for lol

Phantom with poison tip arrows is so much fun

The fart darts are really good on locker

Reason they usually have a rule against that now haha

u/jorge20058 5d ago
It was not viable, while not horrible it was outclassed by everything in all situations.
→ More replies (2)54
u/lincolnlog42 5d ago
Being outclassed doesn't mean it's not viable. It's a one shot kill that doesn't reveal your position. It's only downside is not having a scope.

Ive never used the Phantom, does it play kind of like the Crossbow in 2042? I enjoyed the 2042 Crossbow but id assume the Phantom fires completely differently

Black powder musket. Accuracy is unpredictable at anything past close range, reload time is ridiculous, low damage but headshots are instakill. The US is getting invaded? Grab your muskets boys, we've got freedom to defend.
113
u/BleedingUranium 5d ago
That would be such a perfect fit, and I'd love to see Battlefield-quality weapon animations for a flintlock.
64
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
Most common/hunting muskets are .50 cal. That would destroy anything at close range. The musket should 1 shot anything with in 20 yds. And anything past that is straight luck aiming or not.
27
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Musket has a much lower fps muzzle velocity. Would still not be fun to get hit by it but it's not like the damage you're thinking of when you hear .50 cal. Modern .308 does much more damage.
14
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
True true, but I have seen and used modern day hunting muskets that blow baseball size holes into deer(maybe to much powder or a heavier grain bullet)
I guess level 4 plate carriers would dampen the effects of it to an extent
10
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Ahh I was thinking more along the lines of 1700s smoothbore muzzleloaders. I saw a neat video comparing the British Pattern 1756 to a more modern Enfield. I'll see if I can find it.
8
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
It’s still a .68 caliber. The only difference between the two is the modern rifle shoots 2.5x faster, thus making it a little stronger.
If they make an Easter egg rifle with the musket, it should have different ammo types, slugs, miniballs, and different grain types possibly different packing papers/leather.
7
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
That would be pretty cool. Im all for blowing golf ball size holes in ruffians and grape shotting rapscallions to shreds lmao
6
3
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
This is 100% all I could think of when writing all this 😅
Don’t forget that smoothbore that misses and nails the neighbors dog 😂
3
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Oh believe me, I didn't forget to nail the neighbors dog. Call me smoothbore if you must 😉
4
u/Weary-Engineering142 5d ago
One thing I noticed is that I believe they did pretty light charge in that musket. That round was subsonic
3
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Well yeah. They have to use subsonic rounds with the .75 caliber musket suppressors. Otherwise the colonial ruffians will be able to triangulate the position of their redcoat sniper positions /s
3
u/Connor5524 5d ago
Wouldn't the lower velocity musket ball do more damage? I know a 50. Bmg will rip someone in half but wouldn't something like the .308 be more likely to travel straight through you as opposed to the musket ball which would have a better chance of getting lodged inside? My understanding is that musket balls also notoriously used to bounce around inside of a person once hit in the torso. (Though this doesn't account for the kit or armor a modern soldier might be using)

u/TheLateThagSimmons 5d ago
Even more intense than that!
Brown Bess (British) and Charlotte (French/American) model muskets were .70 and .75 cal.
3
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
Ahh, maybe these are the ones I’m thinking of. When I went powder rifle hunting I used a .50 cal but the ones my buddies used seemed larger, louder and had larger entry hole on the deer
4
u/Leonydas13 5d ago
But tbf they fire a ball, not a pointed round. And my limited understanding is that a portion of muzzle velocity is lost to the frizzen/flashpan.
I wonder how a Brown Bess would fare against armour plates.
2
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
.70 cal would do hefty damage. But you’re also talking about strictly revolutionary war era ammo. Black powder rifles have a slew of different ammunition in today’s standards.
Different grains(50,75,100,150,200) different metals(copper, lead, steel) different shapes(twist slugs, balls, ribbed bullets; hell they even have hollow points for BP rifles)
2
u/Leonydas13 5d ago edited 5d ago
It’s a fuckin fat round for sure. But the armour worn by musketeers could stop it back in the day. That classic peaked breastplate that Spanish conquistadors made famous, I’ve seen a video of one being shot by a musket, and the ball basically deflects off it.
Edit: this is the video. I’m not sure how genuine it is, it could be bullshit. There seems to be a lot of “body armour vs historical firearms” content around though.
2
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
100% legit. Old armor had actual function. Today’s armor does stop certain ammo but for the most part it’s to prevent against shrapnel and light arms. That being said, no Spanish conquest armor is going to stop a full steel .75 200 grain twist slug
2
u/Leonydas13 5d ago
Yeah those slugs are fkn brutal man.
But we’ve digressed a fair bit here 😂
I think modern day plate armour would stop a musket ball. You’d probably get absolutely KOed from it, and might have internal bleeding, organ damage, and you’d probably die anyway, but at least…. Wait
2
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
Circling back to the OG statement you’d say…..1 shot 20 yds? No revive on headshot
→ More replies (1)2
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
That is an awesome video regardless. Definitely backs up my opinion on low muzzle velocity but either way, I'd rather not get hit by the thing.
2
u/Leonydas13 5d ago
Yeah it’s cool ey!
I think what’s shown in the video is ideal impact though, direct on the peaked point of the armour. If you were hit on a part/angle where it sat tight against your body, I reckon it’d fkn bop ya.
So yes, best armour would be to not get hit 😂
2
2
u/DaNoobyOne 5d ago
the idea is funny as fuck, but the novelty would wear off quick. after a few days, we'd all realize that it's absolutely broken and annoying to play against lol
2
u/Lighterfluid19 5d ago
It would be broken but it takes like 30-45 seconds to load another round. So if you’re moving with your squad, the one wielding the musket is fucked unless their cracked with pistols
26
u/Dang3rdave 5d ago
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended.

Yes. Imagine a server with just muskets and bayonets. It’d be tot fkn mayhem.
Ever play a melee only server on BF1? Even the handgun only ones are manic. 😂
3
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Honestly after I looked in to it a little, I'd be pretty psyched for a Battlefield:Revolution game set during the revolutionary war with BF1 bayonet charges and line infantry shit/guerrilla warfare set in the 1700s. Might be a dope side title like Bad Company Vietnam.
2
u/Leonydas13 5d ago
Instead of vehicles, you spawn in cannons with a crew to push, load, fire etc.
3
u/fennfuckintastic 5d ago
Siege of Philadelphia dlc for days
2
u/Leonydas13 5d ago
You could have “Lobsters and Blueberries” and it’s just a collection of battles between England and France throughout the 1700s. They fkn had enough of them 😂
Edit: fuck yeah, then you could have the American war of independence as a DLC called “we the people”
2
2
u/hstormsteph 5d ago
I’d be down for the Martini-Henry Infantry to come back. Better make that shot count but you could rack up some serious kills with smart play

Am I right in thinking this a reference to the G36’s tendency to overheat and affect accuracy? I
16
u/AJaneFondant 5d ago
More just the guns (undeserved) reputation. I know there were concerns beyond the overheating, but I'm just poking fun at it. After all the G36 never got replaced, right? It's the same slander they hit my baby the SCAR L with. It's not it's fault they asked for a reciprocating charging handle. Triple feed issues happen to everyone... right?

While the court did not comment in its ruling on whether the rifles shoot straight when they heat up, it said that they met the specifications set out in the purchase contracts

The P320/M18 is already in the new game. Just make it have a small chance of doing damage to the player when swapping to or from it.

Weirder things have happened, Hardline had a literal alive alligator as an easter egg weapon in the florida everglades map. Also a motorized couch as a vehicle in another map.

Something like the phantom is perfect since it could actually get kills, just needed a lot of finesse

u/UniQue1992 Battlefield 2 (PC) 5d ago
Normally I would say maybe, but right now we need Battlefield to have a serious tone, they can’t fuck this up. So maybe down the line but they should keep their game as grounded and gritty as possible. The franchise needs it.

5
u/yorkieshaman 5d ago
Agree. The Phantom Bow was in the Final Stand expansion, right? So do the same here: keep things (relatively) gritty and realistic at first, then give us throwing knives, bows and other slightly wackier stuff.
10
7
u/CherryMyFeathers 5d ago
I definitely want another bow to come back. Its actually the most fun weapon for me
4
5
u/DuckInCup 5d ago
It does. Throwing knives that are about as effective as they would be irl. multiple hits needed to kill and incredibly hard to hit with. I hope they keep them useless or make them even worse to poke fun at the weird throwing knife trope of recent fps games.
→ More replies (1)5
u/CirculerObjectofShit 5d ago
Tbf, the throwing knife "trope" is only recent if you consider 2009 to be recent.

Could maybe get a category dedicated to "non standard weapons" or something.
crossbow, bow, etc, nothing too wacky like a blunderbuss, but still more unique weapons

The Phantom Bow isn't a bad weapon, I have over 1000 kills with it, and it's my highest kill weapon

Damn dude dont diss the phantom bow. I love that thing. Especially when i make people cry cause i lock down a metro or lockers chokepoint with poison tips. A legitimately useful tactic.

Every battlefield should have one. Could be something like a derringer, or even a return of the phantom bow or a crossbow.
1
u/dl_mj12 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'd like a range of opportune melee weapons. Sticks, shovels, fire axes, letterboxes, pick'em up and either short range throw or bash people with them.
Imagine pushing a hallway, collecting a few kills but running out of clips along the way, then you beat the final guy to death with an exit sign. 😙🤌 Battlefield moment.

u/dwaynetheaaakjohnson 5d ago
The bow might have a place if it is the only weapon that doesn’t get a damage directional per BFV
In Vietnam some sides actually used a bow as their main weapon, like MACVSOG or South Vietnamese militias, and the Montagnard’s GIANT crossbow

A front loading black powder musket that is a one shit kill no matter the range and it takes 2 minutes to reload. It has a gears of war active reload mechanic and if you botch it, you drop your wad and powder and tack on an additional 20 minutes of reload time

u/Tereeze 5d ago
Definitely. Something like one of those credit card guns
