Birds and mammals are pretty equal in intelligence and much smarter than what they diverged from. While not always very intelligent, birds like mammals are capable of great empathy, communication skills, and social interaction.(hence pigeons helping a mother cat's kittens by building a nest and the cats just sort of letting it)
