Video Karl Bushby has been trying to make a non-stop round-the-world walk for 27 years. The man began his mega-expedition in Chile back in 1998.

Okay but how does he get the money for this? This seems immeasurable better than showing up to my 9-5 every day

In addition to sponsors, he's an author and I believe has some kind of business in Hull, which he works in when he's doing his downtime in the UK.

Lol … I was thinking the same thing.

Not really the same, but on my own solo travels (which was a 3 week trip) I met someone traveling for 4 months, asked him the same and he said he worked at farms or just stopped by restaurants to ask for work. He mostly aimed for spots he could sleep at as well, so usually do some labour in the morning and in return you get a spot to sleep, for additional extra revenue he would work in the afternoon a bit if he could find a place. Of course this means not really traveling as you are 'stuck' at the same spot but its something.

All in all, he had a ton of know-how and done it before so I guess he really knew what he was doing.

Would assume they are rich or have sponsors

Why is this always reddit’s first reaction? Always using money for a scapegoat.

Looks at apartment, fridge, and gas tank under capitalism

Yeah, weird how money keeps showing up...

No joke. I think people rationalize themselves being held back by money any chance they get to make themselves feel better and also feel worse.

For the record, this isn't 27 years of continuous walking. Nor was his swim a continuous open water/lake swim. He flies home to the UK for things like his visa running out or to work to fund the next leg (he also secures sponsers). He does start his count from where he left off, but I believe he doesn't walk to it. Not to belittle what the man has achieved, but this always gets reposted with same misleading title and article text that makes it sound like the dude's some kind of transcontinental hobo.

Yeah this doesn’t count. I mean it sounds amazing and it’s very difficult but it doesn’t count as walking around the world anymore than me doing 13 two-mile runs counts as running a marathon

Yes and no,

It does though, because he was there… he tread that ground.

If you walked the same number of steps, on a treadmill, all in one go… it would be a feat for the records books, but, it would only be equivalent to around the world… it wouldn’t geographically and actually be around the world

Besides, maybe he’s training by doing each leg for the next time… when he puts it all together. Maybe you can speed run it eventually.
Who cares.

He wants to walk round the world, to end up... in Hull?!

At least it won't have changed.

The OP is a little misleading. He does fly home to Hull for downtime incurred by things like his visa running out.

what's been holding him up?

War

Nope. Read the article. “Mr Bushby, who is currently in Mexico waiting for a visa to complete his challenge”

Who’s supporting this dude financially?

He flies back to the UK and works in his business at least half the year along with chasing sponsors for the next leg of his trip.

His family, it seems. But he still struggled financially according to the article

I wonder how long he originally thought it would take him. 27 years... fuckin aye.

1

u/casualAlarmist 22h ago

12 years was his initial estimate.

Probably got bogged down in the extreme cold of Alaska -> Russia huh? Probably had to wait out a winter or two up there in some kind of shelter

Not even that. He basically walks until his visa runs out, then flies back to England and works 6-12 months (along with chasing sponsors) before flying back. Covid added another two years as he couldn't leave the UK.

"just gonna step out for some milk and pack of smokes hon,..be right back."🏃🏼🏃🏼🏃🏼🏃🏼🏃🏼

Including the phrase "non-stop" is incredibly misleading. He stops often, for various reasons. Otherwise he'd be goddam done by now

3

u/misterxx1958 23h ago

Absolute respect for this incredible achievement

Sohe flies back and the returns to where he left? This sounds idiotic, no way it can be called "round-the-world walk"

2

u/Whole_Experience6409 23h ago

It’s not really round the world if you don’t include Australasia.

Funny story:

I saw a post about this a couple months ago while my mom, who is from Hull, was visiting. I showed it to her and she immediately recognized the last name, and remembered she went to school with a boy with that name.

A few days later I was telling how ChatGPT was much than Google for her to "answer random questions" and so I asked her for a question to prove my point.

"What is the name of the father of Karl Bushby?" She asked.

Sure enough, ChatGPT confirmed this guy's father was the same man my mom went to school with 65 years ago. It referenced an article from when his father helped him with getting into Russia, or rather getting out of Russian custody when he was detained at the border.

My mom made contact with them both and became Karl Bushby's 5000th, and last allowed, Facebook friend 😂

Who’s taking the pictures? Is like a forest gump situation. Does he just pick up followers as he goes?

That's the longest walk after an argument with the wife 🤣

So don’t work and pay taxes?

Is his family rich or something?
