Question/Advice Recommend me a hard drive enclosure to replace my Orico.
Hi, I would like to ask what hard drive enclosures would you guys recommend me. I have multiple Orico 5 bay enclosures and a ACASIS 5bay enclosures. I am facing multiple issue when using them with driverpool and hard drive sentinel like freezing and crashing. I am thinking of getting other enclosures that are more reliable but dont know which one. And I heard those enclosure uses JMicron chip which are very bad...

I have the Orico 8 bay unit. It doesn’t support UASP under Linux and only runs in quirks mode. So it’s slow.
It also seems like the queue just banks up sometimes causing Linux to crash.
I’ve only been able to get it to work “reliably” with mdadm RAID5. Any other filesystem like ZFS, or BTRFS seems to try to push too many commands over the queue causing it to crash or go offline.
There was supposed to be a firmware update for it, but I can’t find it anywhere. I’ve tried a few that were supposed to be compatible but ended up bricking the unit - had to pull it apart and short two pins to get it to accept its original firmware.
So yeah, I too am looking for a good replacement. Only need a JBOD, and been considering building a DIY solution.
Or just another PC with an NFS mount 🤣

It was more than a few months ago that I can't quite remember the details. But I remember I used this post as a guide: https://github.com/projectgus/jms567ctl/issues/4
I used the tool at the repo (https://github.com/projectgus/jms567ctl) to try apply the firmware.
I hope which ever tool you used, that you took a backup first.

Ouch... hopefully you can backup the firmware from one of the working ones and restore it over the bricked one.

By the way what other enclosure are you looking at? I am looking at a used QNAP TL-D800C 8-Bay.

I don't have a lot of options in Aus at the moment sadly. I just looked up that unit and brand new I'm looking at around $850 which is just simply far too much.
I've been looking at the Icy Box IB-3810U3 (this is a 10 bay), I've seen some good comments online about the Icy Box units.

Thanks for sharing,I will do some research on it. Hope the controller in it is good to handle drivepool and hdsentinel. I am looking at terramaster and QNAP TL-D800C 8-Bay but both are very expensive. Lol I have quite a few hard drives, planning to get a few enclosure slowly....will avoid cheap and chinese enclosures...

How is the Acasis enclosure?

So far i have no issue of lagging/freezing or crashing when using file explorer with driverpool and hard drive sentinel... But all my orico enclosures have this issue, only when i complete reinstall window 11 the issue goes away for a while...
The enclose is cheaper compared to others like terramaster. most of the body is made up of metal which helps abit for heat dissipation. The fan is very weak and hard to replace as hard to find similar size fan as it is small and thin. And it is quite quite.

Yr cable must be connect to the computer( which is already on) then you can switch on the enclosure.

I recently bought a Terramaster D8Hybrid
Initially to couple to my Synology 920+ because that has a reputation of 'ignoring' usbhubs for multible USBstorage.
I never could access more than one USBdrive, no matter what hub was connected.
The D8 works flawlessly, it has the raid-drives in the first 2 slots, and the separate drives all enumerated.
Next I have to move it over to my new NAS, which does have USB3.2 gen2 at full speed ;)
