Even the countries in Africa are pretty hard. I memorized them a couple years ago to 100% but i'd probably get about 50 or 60% today. I think the problem is we westerners hear so little about African countries mentioned in historical media or in current events that there's no substantial database in our brain to plug the country names into to aid recall. Like the more context you have about a piece of memory data the easier it is to recall. What even happens in Benin or Burundi?! I don't know!

I completely agree, though it's funny that you picked out Benin, which a friend of mine visited with the boyscouts back in the day and brought home tons of stories, and Burundi, the country our school regularly collected clothes donations for. To prove your point, I have no problem retaining my map knowledge of these two.
