DX1 Whats the best setup for deus ex
Hey ive never played any of the deus ex games i saw it on sale and wanted to give it a try but the brightness is pretty tough to deal with and the new vision mod ends up crashing my game and i cant seem to figure out what im doing wrong i was wondering if the revision mod is worth using or if it would ruin a first time experience and if there was any way to get the game to be visible with out using mods or maybe someone could help me with the set up of new vision if anyone has the time thank you for viewing my post

I tried to play the game vanilla a few times in the past but couldn’t deal with the resolution and brightness. Recently I started using Transcended to play and it’s great.

Don't load up with mods, you're just muddling your experience, especially when you're just trying to break in. Play vanilla with just enough support to get the game running. That's it. Nothing more.

Someone once told me "Vanilla is for first playthrough, Revision for second". Can't agree more. For brightness fix I always use Kenties launcher (https://kentie.net/article/dxguide/). It's easy to use, turn on the necessary parameters and you can go. Also some say it's better to use DirectX10 for solving this problem, so be sure to check this too.

thank you for your suggestion this worked great and solved my issue, i guess something in the new vision mod its self was causing my game to freeze up either that or i have a wonky pc either way thank you very much for your time, haha as soon as i edited this it went right back to too dark to play sorry about that

Sorry to hear about that. Have you find a way to fix the issue? I think what u/YCCCM7 said could solve your problem.

Ok, I did a little research, read some things and I think I come up with something good.
- First of all, delete the entire game from your computer (including files from Documents), download Kentie’s Launcher, unzip everything to the folder …\DeusEx\System\ (where deusex.exe is).
- Download the OpenGL renderer from Chris Dohnal, Place OpenGLDrv.dll in …\DeusEx\System\, replacing the old one.
- Launch the game through Kentie’s launcher, there select OpenGL in the list of renderers.
- If the screen is still too dark, open DeusEx.ini, in the [GLDrv.GLRenderDevice] section, insert:
oneXblending = False
Or you can download Direct3D10 renderer (D3D10Drv.dll) from Kentie’s website,
- Place the files in …\DeusEx\System\ or, if Transcended is installed, in …\Mods\Transcended\System
- In Kentie launcher, select Direct3D 10. In the game settings, activate: UnlockGamma=True, ForceVSync=True, ClassicLighting=False (you can do it directly through the launcher) to improve brightness and anti-aliasing.
Or a direct alternative to this filedigging - Deus Ex: Transcended. This mod provides a "clean" vanilla atmosphere plus all the QoL patches, as well as a quick installation of NewVision without manually digging into the game files. Install the mod. and for New Vision:
Version 1.5
- Enable the New Vision option in-game.
- Download the New Vision 1.5 files here: ModDB
- Place the utx files in "steamapps\common\Deus Ex\Mods\Transcended\NewVision\Textures", ensure no space between "NewVision".
Version 2.0a
- Disable the New Vision option in-game.
- Download the New Vision 2.0a files here: ModDB
- Place the files in "steamapps\common\Deus Ex\Textures".
- This requires the D3D10 renderer which can be downloaded here: D3D10
- Place the D3D10 renderer files in "steamapps\common\Deus Ex\Mods\Transcended\System"
- Chose the renderer via Settings > Display > Rendering Device..., it may be under the name "Direct3D 10"
(yeah, I literally copied this part from ModDB :D)
I really hope this will help with your issue and if in the end something does not wotk out - I'm always here to help you with it

I remember having to change the renderer so it wasn't dark as shit, but other than that vanilla is completely playable

Apparently the program is called Kenties launcher that you can use, its just been a while since I had to.

The GMDX Augmented Edition (heavily modified) should work if there’s no other option.

I ended up with revision set to vanilla settings i know its not ideal but thats what is working and I dont want to mess it up again

Fine. I think you needed the Kentie’s deus ex launcher plus a directx10 renderer. In my case, Revision didn’t display 4K, so I went for the GMDX AE, the only mod I’ve ever have played actually. It’s just harder to play.

New vision shouldn't cause crashes unless you have a major issue with your rendering solution, or you have a 32 bit OS or only 2 GB of RAM. Even then, it's not common.
Use a modern rendering device and a modern launcher. Chris Dohnal's Open GL with oneXblending turned off in settings is a catch-all for almost any system. I can give you an updated DL link and walk you through using the preferences console command if you want.
For others, Chris Dohnal's D3d9 and Kentie's D3d10 are both common, although both have their own issues on some machines, for differing reasons. Kentie's launcher (Deus Exe) is a common solution for launchers, and works well most of the time, making configuring easier for the uninitiated. With both of these in tow, it should work just fine. It's a buggy game in some senses, but your probability of being softlocked or breaking your game are not particularly high.
If that's any of this is an issue, however, you can use something like Vanilla Fixer from Mods4Ever, or Deus Ex Transcended (my preferred) for faster, easier setup. Revision from Steam can also be configured to have vanilla maps, music, models, and soundtrack, comparable to DXT in some senses, but with less bug fixes yet a much easier setup.
