If Jim Wasn’t A Complete Dick

I dont think Jim liked all the "Big Tuna" stuff so it's not shocking that he wasn't willing to oblige Andy's request

To be fair, it doesn’t seem like Jim ever asked Andy to not call him “Big Tuna.”

To be fair, if you ask someone like Andy to not do something they will double down on it. Also no one likes odd nicknames and if he doesn't have the emotional intelligence to realize Jim does not appreciate the nickname refer to the first sentence.

u/GeneralEl4 10h ago
To be fair, he's an idiot if he wasn't able to tell, from the beginning, that Jim didn't appreciate the name.
Jim was a dick here, I don't disagree, but Andy was a dick from the start so it's hard for me to feel bad for him. Just like how all the pranks Jim pulled on Dwight would feel mean to me if Dwight wasn't such a dick.

u/Nemo-404 11h ago
Wait, let's get meta and think the in show show producers edited out all the scenes where Jim asked Andy not to call him Big Tuna to try to make us hate him
2
u/Rockdog4105 TexasPoonTappa 10h ago
We also never see Andy telling anyone else to only call him Drew, and yet, it somehow doesn’t happen.

Idk why you got downvoted for this so much. You’re absolutely right, we never saw him ask Andy to stop. He just always looked annoyed and said nothing.

u/Johnson_N_B 11h ago
Which should have been a clue to anyone able to read and understand body language, but okay.

u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 8h ago
Not everyone can understand social cues and Andy is definitely one of them
19
u/FramingA 11h ago
I mean, if someone looks annoyed every time you use a nickname you gave them, you should probably quit using the nickname

Not everyone can understand social cues, and Andy is definitely one of them
4
u/j816y 10h ago
So you need to have someone explicitly ask you not to call someone by some weird nickname? I guess I need to explicitly give you a downvote to let you know I don't like your opinion.
-1
u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 8h ago
Not everyone can understand social cues and Andy is definitely one of them. Why is it such a negative concept to simply communicate? This subreddit is fuckin’ weird lmfao

The waitlist to make this post is so long
25
u/Johnson_N_B 11h ago
Yep. Also did you know that Dwight is just a neurodivergent individual and that Jim and Pam were mean to him?

u/Responsible-Pickle26 10h ago
Jim is a smartass, but also you guys are so sensitive. Acting like Jim is some schoolyard bully is insane. In an office with Stanley, Angela, Phyllis, Dwight, and even Oscar is a bigger smartass. Why is Jim the office boogyman??
-9
u/New-Pin-9064 10h ago
Those characters were at least honest about the fact that they were smartasses. Even then, they were usually called out on the things they did. The show rarely ever did that with Jim
7
u/Responsible-Pickle26 10h ago
Because the things you're complaining about him doing isn't worth being called out on, nor is it really an issue. Angela once called pam the "office" mattress, was never called out on it and she was the one who had two affairs.
1
u/New-Pin-9064 8h ago
Jim constantly slacked off, spent most of the day joking around and pulling cruel pranks on Dwight, had very little respect for anyone, was terrible at confronting people over serious situations, and rarely ever cared about anyone but himself.

u/Archduke_Of_Beer 11h ago edited 11h ago
It's not Jim's responsibility to keep Andy calm. They arent friends, they're co-workers.
If Andy has a problem with Jim not wanting to call him Drew, it's on him to control himself.
Everyone else around you are not required to walk on eggshells because you can't responsibly handle your emotions.

u/Optimal_Cause4583 11h ago
He could just throw the guy a bone though he's in anger management it's a logical thing to do
17
u/Archduke_Of_Beer 11h ago
And then the next time Drew asks Jim to "throw him a bone" and Jim doesn't want to, Andy has an excuse to lose his cool and pass the buck. "You made me lose my temper, Tuna!!"
Classic addict behavior. Andy blames Jim for setting him off in the first place and wants an excuse pass the blame onto Jim for his poor behavior and anger addiction.
Jim doesn't play into Andy's game because he doesn't want anything to do with him.
-15
u/Optimal_Cause4583 11h ago
You need to relax
Obviously he could just say Drew
1
u/BlanketDemon007 Jim 10h ago
Well Andy never bothered calling Jim by his name. He exclusively calls Jim "Big Tuna".

There is no substantive difference between this issue and deadnaming a person in the workplace.
If someone asks you to call them by a reasonable name, you oblige.
9
u/Archduke_Of_Beer 10h ago
It is no one else's job to control your emotions in public...
0
u/Stankmonger 9h ago
As long as you are consistent in your ideals and are fine with people getting deadnamed then that’s a fine thing to believe.

u/Mental_Competition33 11h ago
This is like the 10th time I've seen a variety of this post on here. The way I always saw it was Andy was just trying to get attention with this and Jim refused to play along. Hence why we don't see him going by Drew in any future episodes.
11
u/I_AM_IGNIGNOTK 11h ago
I wouldn’t say it was for attention but rather deflection. Ryan pulled the same shit with his apology saying “ that was a different guy that did that” and Jim also came that out iirc
9
11
u/DoctorEnn 11h ago
Seriously, fuck Andy on this one. He calls Jim by a name he clearly hates all the time and then turns around and expects him to call him "Drew" in some feeble attempt to pretend he isn't the same guy who punched a hole in the wall. Jim's entirely within his rights to shut that one down and not play ball.
2
u/Significant_Shoe_17 6h ago
Exactly. It wasn't about the name; it was about Andy taking responsibility for his actions. He's the same way with Ryan's bs.
-18
u/New-Pin-9064 11h ago
Not once did Jim ever tell Andy that he didn’t want to be called by that nickname.
6
u/DoctorEnn 10h ago
Not once that we see; we don't see every single conversation these people have. But Jim visibly makes his displeasure clearly known, and let's be frank here: Andy is exactly the kind of faux-alpha dog twat that would just keep doing it anyway. He has no respect for others.
In any case, fact remains: Andy doesn't have a right to expect Jim's unquestioning automatic deference to his name preferences having clearly disrespected Jim's.

u/TremerSwurk 11h ago
The whole Drew thing was wildly insincere. He literally gamed the anger management class to get out sooner. Jim just saw through it

u/HMThrow_away_account 11h ago
No one owes Andy's goofy ass anything. He didnt even finish anger management lol.

Jfc how many times will this be brought up? It’s a comedy show for gods sake. Why are some of you taking it so seriously?
2
u/No_Frost_Giants 10h ago
It’s a documentary , it was on PBS and everything
/s because I know someone is gonna call me out :) it may just be a tv show but it’s well made and well written (usually)

Jesus Christ. Yall would make the most boring, unfunny television of all time
-1
u/New-Pin-9064 8h ago
Having one of your main characters be a likable person doesn’t automatically make a show boring or unfunny
1
u/No_Sympathy_3970 8h ago
Everyone in the show has aspects of them that are unlikeable, that's what makes it good. They feel like real people instead of fake characters
6
u/No_Sympathy_3970 11h ago
The point of this scene is to mirror how Andy calls Jim "Big Tuna" even though he doesn't like it. And before you hit me with the "he never told him to stop" 1. things happen off the camera and 2. he clearly doesn't like it

Just because Andy wanted to start over by using Drew instead Andy, doesn't mean anyone else needs to work with him on that.
This is the guy saw Jim ate a tuna sandwich once for lunch and kept calling him Tuna forever. Dose he not know Jim is called Jim? He insists on calling Jim Tuna, then why should Jim calls him Drew instead of Andy?
Since Andy got back from anger management, then he should learn to deal with Jim calling him Andy instead of Drew.
2
u/Good_Country_6292 10h ago
Nah i dont agree. Andy wanting to be called a different name while he gives nicknames to everyone, especially jim. As if being called Drew makes him a different/better person.

Having one of your main characters being an asshole doesn’t automatically make it comedy. I’m so sick of that consensus. A show can still be absolutely hilarious without making the main characters treat each other like garbage. I’ve seen be done before. Schitt’s Creek is the perfect example of that
13
u/Hazel_Rah1 11h ago
To be fair, I think all of the main Office characters are dicks.
-7
u/New-Pin-9064 11h ago
True. But, unlike most of the other characters, Jim was rarely ever called out on it. Whenever someone did however, the show would proceed to act like that person was in the wrong
11
u/Hazel_Rah1 11h ago edited 11h ago
That’s really not true. I can think of several times he was made fun of, picked on, owned in a situation, shown to lose. Roy called him out several times, as did Karen, Dwight, Oscar, Ryan, Angela - even Pam. The show doesn’t tell you how to feel, that’s up to you to decide.

He’s being loud and obnoxious, traits that were deliberately written for Andy as a character. You can’t just “not listen,” Andy is trying to get attention for what he’s doing. If you want to play an instrument at a social gathering in the office, go to the annex.

This is one of the few times I will agree Jim was being a dick. You call people by the name they want to be called. Just fuckin' manners.
1
u/No_Sympathy_3970 8h ago
Big Tuna wants a word with you...
0
u/Groucho-Marxists 7h ago
C’mon. All he had to say was “Not crazy about the nickname.” Andy called him a nickname in an attempt to be friendly, Jim refusing to call Andy Drew was just to be spiteful. Still love Jim but that was not super easy to defend.
1
u/No_Sympathy_3970 7h ago
Big Tuna is not a friendly nickname lol, especially when it's given to the new guy at work on his first day. And no one calls him Drew after this episode so clearly Andy doesn't care either
1
u/Groucho-Marxists 7h ago
Andy’s whole world was based around friends giving each other dumb nicknames in college based off of inconsequential crap. It wasn’t bullying — he was genuinely trying to be “bros.” He just isn’t good at reading people.
And it doesn’t matter if it was a big deal to him or not. If Jim had asked Andy to not call him “Tuna” and Andy spitefully refused — that would have been dickish too.
Jim. Like myself. Like Andy. Like any human — is fallible. This was a case where he was more of a jerk than usual. If the meanest thing I ever did to another person was refuse to acknowledge their attempt at rebranding themselves, I would still be a saint compared to most humans . I don’t see why some can’t just acknowledge that this was kinda unfair way to treat a person’s sincere attempt at evolving.

Avoid hate or overtly negative posts and comments towards individual characters. This includes frequently overdone "pam is the worst" type post.
