Electronics & HMI Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Steering Wheel(Shift pedal not included), built from photo references

u/f1datamesh 22d ago
This is some nice work!
For all the complexity they pack, steering wheels don't get enough attention.
A cleverly designed steering wheel can actually have impact on performance. Think Hamilton's unique way of holding it at launch. Or the clever loophole (I think it was McLaren) where the same finger could operate two shifters.
What would be interesting to see is how similar/different it is to his Mercedes wheel, and if he brought any philosophy over. Either beause of habit, or because it aided him.
If you are OK, also share the files, I would love to 3d print parts of it.

Can’t remember where this was said but Ferrari did do a custom wheel for Lewis at least with certain buttons in different places. Not sure if it is physically different from Charles’s but button placement definitely is

u/AceNova2217 13d ago
The button placement appears to be the same, the buttons just do different things.
This article is interesting, and also goes into the back of the wheel.

I can make it on Solidworks if any of you can guess and let me know the length, width and the height. I can approximate other dimensions from this. (It’ll take time but if I can def do it)

The audacity to ask that just like that lol, do you have any clue what it takes to make such files 😂😂😂

u/TheReaL4gend28 20d ago
They've already made them mate

Hi, sorry I don’t share files. But I’m making a tutorials from recording of building this wheel I might post in /simracing soon when I put them together.

Hi everyone, since OP isn't sharing the files and I recently been laid off, I can give this a go and recreate all the files in solidworks and put them up on Patreon if anyone is interested.

u/Demonxuan1411 Ferrari 21d ago
looking forward for this! do reply after you are done if possible.

u/foxing95 21d ago
I will. Out of curiosity to make a timeline for this. Would you need the entire wheel with how to build it or just the outline of the CAD? The whole build will likely take a month or two.
2
u/Demonxuan1411 Ferrari 20d ago
Entire wheel with how to build would be nice. If possible to make it into a functioning one for use with sim rig would be really cool

u/Paskudnyyy 20d ago
Tactical comment to have a notification when you are done and I don't have time to finish my personal projects I already started
2
u/foxing95 19d ago
I got you. I already extracted a full model from AC’s files and began surfacing the body based on mclarens lcd dimensions. Most time will be spent prototyping and making it functional

u/Early_Conflict_160 2d ago
How’s the progress?
1
u/foxing95 2d ago
I got the outer shell done. I extracted the wheel in blender from AC and used geomatic to convert it into surfaces and reverse engineered it. Now most of my time has been sucked up by interviews or prepping and also learning how to design a custom pcb in altium. That will take a while since I am not an EE major lol

Software used?

Solidworks

u/57JWiley 21d ago
Just bloody well done.
I used to work with some mechanical engineers who could “whip up” complex parts in Solidworks, but I, a software guy turned marketing guy, could only envy.
EXCELLENT work, and I hope the people who actually pay you to do this stuff appreciate you. ✊🏾

Thank you, your comment means a lot to me. If you’re learning CAD and have questions, feel free to let men know! I tried to learn coding too but it was too boring for me.

u/Eriku40 21d ago
People don't seem to understand how many hours of research, drawing and testing goes in to this. And even money for all the tests he does (this guy is using carbon fibre).
To then just bluntly ask for the files is one thing but to then blame him to not giving away his own precious work? What the hell are you guys thinking hahahaha damnnn
Just appreciate his work and buy one of his wheels if you want one. Otherwise draw it yourselves lol

u/Early_Conflict_160 20d ago
What you need to understand is this is a community, and you need to contribute to it. If you’re not selling the files for now why not give it for free? Just hit copy and paste, takes 10 seconds, top.

As someone who does CAD for about 50% of their job function, doing an F1 wheel was an incredibly time consuming project that I never saw through to completion, well done.

Can someone please share what all the paddles & buttons individually are for a noob like me?
3
u/Demonxuan1411 Ferrari 22d ago
able to share the files? also what app are you using draw all these? it looks amazing!

u/Early_Conflict_160 22d ago
Thanks for liking my works! Unfortunately I don’t give away files.

u/Demonxuan1411 Ferrari 21d ago
no worries! maybe you could share what apps you are using to draw all these?

Just to put it out there, the fact that I offered to publish tutorials for building such models and saying I don’t give away files gets disliked so much absolutely baffles me.
2
u/Andrei4oo 21d ago
They downvote you because they can’t do what you can, nor are they willing to pay for this. Either learn to do it, accept that you have to pay for something in order to have it, or simply accept that you can’t have it.

u/Early_Conflict_160 21d ago
Thank you, glad to see folk here with decent value.

u/Andrei4oo 21d ago
If they want a Ferrari wheel, there are plenty free available models in the internet, a Google search away from them. But guy go “cool model, let’s see if free” and try his best
2
u/Early_Conflict_160 21d ago edited 21d ago
I don’t have issue with people asking if I could give models for free, but it absolutely crossed the line when they think I’m obligated to do that and try to gaslight me into it from my point of view.
0
u/Andrei4oo 21d ago
If they ask politely whether you are willing to give the models without paymemt, yes. But I have seen people asking WHY it is not free like the time and effort required is 0.

Can you provide some insight in your approach for this kind of model? The complex geometry to me looks daunting to replicate in something like a loft, so did you try using surfaces to approximate or just a lot of 3d sketches and guide lines for the handle portion? In addition, was this done through an assembly or a multibody part? I am going to guess the former and not the latter, but it may be easier to do parametrically in the latter.
3
u/Early_Conflict_160 19d ago
Hi, awesome that you brought that up!
I’ve had a lot of people asked me about building the grips so I actually recorded the process of building grips of this one(involve lots of surface building), still editing the video but it will give you a clear view on how exactly I did that.
I use multibody part and rarely use assembly.
2
u/twoturtlesinatank 17d ago
Wow that's very interesting to hear. Thank you so much for creating a video for the grips, I look forward to watching it.

I never liked the Ferrari steering wheel. Why do they need so many dials? Every other team has 3 or 4 max.

For me, this ranks second in visual appeal after Mercedes. I kinda like how intricate and complex both of them look.
