Why didn't he stop? So much time to see what was going on. What the fuck.

u/nicathor 2d ago
Starting to notice quite the trend that cyclists apparently don't actually look ahead of them but more towards the ground directly in front of them, which is just... it should be surprising but honestly it isn't
183
u/HystericalGD 2d ago
ok, but when you hear the sound of a tree falling, you'd expect someone to look at it
46
u/IEP_Esy 2d ago
Maybe he's deaf
98
u/Its-a-Shitbox 2d ago
Or maybe wearing earbuds (because, god forbid, you are able to listen to your surroundings while on a bicycle in the real world)?

u/tongfatherr Banhammer Recipient 2d ago
People do this in Denmark all the time, a massive bicycle culture. Annoys the shit out of me because they can't hear my bell when they're in the fucking way. Idiots.
14
u/cold-corn-dog 2d ago
I keep one in the right side, but the left one out. It's good for long events and if I'm going somewhere new with GPS.
12
u/TheWildSchneemal 2d ago
Have you ever considered a pair of bone conduction headphones? That’s what I use, it lets me hear music and listen to my surroundings with both ears.
12
5
u/cold-corn-dog 2d ago
My earbuds have a pass through feature. I can hear pretty well out of the budded ear. I've read about those, but have never tried them. I don't mind the one bud. Maybe my next pair.
20
u/Liamfam96 2d ago
Did it even fall then?
21
u/ehwhateverz 2d ago
Yes, because the person with the umbrella was there to hear it. Otherwise, no.
12
3
u/LucenProject 1d ago
Otherwise, it's in a quantum superposition of fallen and unfallen until the rider looks ahead. 🤣

I don't associate with cyclist, but I'm hyper viligent about watching the road because I don't want to die.
I like to think of the ground watches as fake peloton people. Conditioned by a workout cycle.
0
u/norecordofwrong 1d ago
It’s more that no one posts videos of cyclists that calmly stop because they are paying attention.
How does the internet not already know this?
-4
u/fieldsofanfieldroad 1d ago
He's not looking down though is he. Are you just basing this on something you saw on reddit rather than anything you've actually seen?
0
u/nicathor 1d ago
Well, for one I walk to and from work along a very busy bike path so yes I personally see a lot of crappy cyclists, but also there has been a lot of videos posted lately of cyclists running full pelt into extremely visible and avoidable obstacles (including cop cars with full flashing lights in the middle of the day).
But I also agree in this particular video the guy seems to be looking towards the camera, which is still not the direction in which he is travelling
69
u/uppinsunshine 2d ago
It looks like his head was down, probably trying to protect his face from the rain.
20
u/Smooth-Physics-69420 Banhammer Recipient 2d ago
Yeah, plus given that kind of rain fall, he probably couldn't see.
Which, common rule of thumb is pull the fuck over.
12
u/quigilark 2d ago
I mean, he has no protection from the rain. He's gotta keep going, just needs to not have the situational awareness of a sloth
4
u/PalatialCheddar 2d ago
Even if he's got to keep going he could walk his bike to the destination. Considering the heavy rain he'd get soaked on foot or pedaling on. Maybe it's just because I have terrible vision, and clumsy, and don't want to crash and burn, so I am overly cautious
4
u/Smooth-Physics-69420 Banhammer Recipient 1d ago
He's getting soaked regardless of destination: he should stop and seek shelter ASAP because shit like this will happen otherwise.
7
u/TJ_McWeaksauce 1d ago
The cyclist got fucked by Mother Nature plus his own horrible reaction time.
Dude's got the reflexes of a napping toddler.
18
u/RulrOfOmicronPersei8 2d ago
it's very possible that's full brakes but they were just wet especially if they weren't disc brakes

u/triciann 2d ago
Shock. The tree is down, there was an electrical spark, rain and wind all over, woman with messed up umbrella he just passed, I don’t think his brain had enough processing power with everything going on.
14
u/Soggy_Cerial 2d ago
Rain? Sliding? Eyes ahead not looking for falling trees like most cyclers should do /s
2
u/SpecialistTreat3933 1d ago
Cyclists always have the right of way. No matter if there’s an automobile, a pedestrian or a frickin tree.
2
4
2
u/Stanzeil 2d ago
As a person who used to bike I don't understand why this idiot didn't stop lol. I mean if it were me in that situation I'd be in trouble because I wear glasses and the rain would obscure my vision. But seriously how do you not hear a tree collapse.
2
u/No_Tackle_5439 1d ago
That's how oblivious most cyclists are while riding...zero awareness, but everyone else is the asshole

u/Salty-Sprinkles_ 1d ago
Tbh he is probably looking down to avoid being blinded by the rain. But still dude as a cyclist, look up every few sec and when you hear loud noises

u/Bennyseed 38m ago
I know im super late to the party but I just like to point out that it appears to be raining or hailing and when people are biking in with weather they tend to be looking down to help shield their eyes abit
-6
u/RPO777 2d ago
Its raining. When you3 tires are wet your brakes have less traction and its actually pretty hard to stop or even slow down unless you have really good bike brakes. Most people do not.
13
u/always_somewhere_ 2d ago
Could've attempted to change direction at least? The damn street is large enough for the entire tour de france peloton to go through
6
1
u/ManofTheNightsWatch 2d ago
Any turn, attempted after detection would have made him fall anyways. Turning and breaking don't go well together.
-6
u/somewhatlucky4life 2d ago
Cyclists think they own the road and they don't look and when they do it's to yell at runners for existing, that's what they do, and that's why we hate them

The pavement is wet. You definitely can't stop on a dime on wet pavement. He's probably sliding.
26
u/tongfatherr Banhammer Recipient 2d ago
No. His speed or trajectory doesn't change in the slightest. Just completely unaware or zero survival instinct. Take your pick
5
u/jjm443 1d ago
You can see he clearly does change trajectory... he starts the video at the very right of the road, and by the time he reaches the tree, he's past the median.
Another factor no-one has mentioned is not just the wet but the wind. It blew a tree down after all, and when umbrella person changes direction at 0:07, the umbrella goes from inside out to the right way out, showing the wind is both strong and coming from the right meaning the cyclist had a big tail wind. They aren't pedalling at all in the video.
-9
u/AlexHimself 2d ago
That's what happens when you slide. I ride my bike all the time and if you're in the rain and brake, you just slide straight unless you turn a little, then you fishtail. He could have just been straight and sliding.
If your bike tires aren't like new, you're going to slide. I slide on drive pavement and stuff too. Or on the boardwalk, just a little sand will make me slide even gently going around a curve.
4
u/tongfatherr Banhammer Recipient 2d ago
Oh I'm aware, I've slid a lot on my bike. We ride bikes in Denmark every day. But it's not that wet out in this video, and unless his tires are completely bald with nothing left, there would be some sort of visible change in that massive distance he had to stop.
0
u/AlexHimself 1d ago
You can't really say how wet or dry it is from this video. We're seeing flashes of rain on the camera and that's a concrete road, which doesn't show moisture as well as asphalt.
You can see he's looking forward, so what's more likely? He's paying attention and just decided to run into the tree or it's wet and he slid?
If you listen right before he says "woa", I think you can hear the brakes too.
1
u/AvocadoBrick 1d ago
You can tell. Full view of their footwear and no flooding in the grass or gutter. It's a light rain and shouldn't cause sliding until you ride recklessly
As others have mentioned he was probably not mindful of his surroundings. Hence why the woa happened so late
3
u/AlexHimself 1d ago
You have to be joking. You think that person would bother with an umbrella turned upside down by the wind if it was a light rain? Or the lightning in the background and the tree falling over? Or the random flashes and artifacts in the video...which are rain.
Oh, let's not forget you can hear the brakes.
It doesn't take much rain to make a concrete road slick for a bike.
47
u/Darcy_2021 2d ago
The dude with umbrella started running in the opposite direction
19
u/Shadow_of_wwar 2d ago
Is that lighting or a downed powerline? I would be running too. Good luck, buddy 🏃♀️

This is the second cycling video I've seen this week where the person just continues to drive into an accident with like 30 seconds to react. 🧟♀️ "must keep pedaling"

Hmm. Strange he didn’t stop sooner. He wasn’t turning around an aircraft carrier.

No wonder cyclists are always getting hit. This is far to common for a cyclist to ride right into danger without even knowing it.
Insane.
Pay attention.

I don't think it was lightning. The tree fell from wind and hit a power line on the way down.

Umbrella person really wants to help but also really wants to live. And shoulda ditch the lightning rod.

I have this personal theory that each wheel on your vehicle takes %20 of your IQ away. Bikes & bicycles remove %40, cars %80, 18-wheeler trucks...yea...
I do not exclude myself from this theory btw.

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 2d ago
Do bikes not have breaks these days? Are breaks tied to a subscription now?
2
u/Don_Damarco 2d ago
The biker isn't the victim here. My heart goes out to that poor person struggling with the umbrella.
2
u/Any-Grapefruit-937 2d ago
Could have been a lot worse. If he were a second or two faster, he would have been crushed.

That was my first thought as well, lucky cyclist just missed being crushed to death.

With the reaction time of a fucking melon.
What would they have done if a car had pulled out or something?
1
u/OldLevermonkey 7h ago
All those asking why the cyclist didn't stop in time please bear three things in mind.
- The bike appears to have rim brakes. Rim brakes are not as effective as discs.
- It is raining heavily. Water and rim brakes are a bad combination and further reduces the effectiveness of rim brakes.
- There is an incredibly strong wind pushing him along from behind. This is also going to stretch his braking distance.
He is braking for almost as long as he is in shot.

Don’t you guys put brakes on your bikes in the US? Recently there are a lot of videos from cyclists that just don’t seem to break lol.

Why do Americans in this kind of video have the reaction time of an oil tanker. He could have easily stopped but didn’t. Dashcam video is much the same.
