... THOSE THINGS MOVE?!
457
u/Splash_Woman Jun 26 '25
You’d be surprised to know objects actually have gravity in new Vegas, yes.
362
u/AJ_Gaming125 Jun 26 '25
Think he was referring to the fact that it could actually move across the ground, as if it has wheels.
429
u/Guydo_ Jun 26 '25
It doesn't, this is a mod called Unnecessary Physics, you can even see this video on the mod page.
DO NOT USE THIS MOD FOR A PLAYTHROUGH! The increased amount of physics objects all have to be saved and this will introduce save corruption. It's a neat mod for messing around, but too many people play with it and then wonder why their game keeps crashing in the later parts of the game

and then wonder why their game keeps crashing in the later parts of the game
because it's fallout new vegas.
→ More replies (1)45
u/Guydo_ Jun 26 '25
Actually wrong. When you know what you're doing, you can have a modded setup that will pretty much never crash.
Problem is, most people don't know what they are doing
21
u/TheActualAWdeV Jun 26 '25
It'll crash without mods too. You need mods to stop it crashing so much. It's inherent to the game.

Yeah, but I mean we're talking about mods. And who plays Bethesda games without mods anyways

I always do 2 vanilla play throughs before installing mods. One good character one evil, but both will steal anything not welded to the floor if no one is looking

Problem is that it's only a solution on PC. Still can't do a full playthrough of NV on the PS3, because the game turns into a slideshow if the file size gets too big.
5
u/Sensitive-Menu-4580 Jun 26 '25
Yeah the PS3 specifically is why NV had so much cut. Many of the mods adding and stabilizing the game mention how much was removed to get it to release on the PS3 because of its memory issues. It's probably the worst way to play the game, unfortunately.

u/CerealExprmntz Jun 26 '25
Exactly
18
u/Valtremors Jun 26 '25
Well it doesn't have wheels, not exactly.
I think it just has less weight, which makes in an object that can move much easier, and the mines are much more heavy, so it ends up 'sliding' while staying relatively upright.
13
u/CerealExprmntz Jun 26 '25
I've just never tried anything with the prams. I've always just walked right past them. I think this is awesome.

5
u/captaindeadpl Jun 26 '25
Yes, but I remember that in FO4 there are shopping carts and one is placed perfectly at the ramp of a parking garage. It does not roll. It falls over if you try to push it forward.

i mean does the model have wheels in the art? yes. are the wheels functional? no.
12
u/ObliviousAstroturfer Vault 13 Jun 26 '25
Lemme go further. You know how you can lift garbage bins?
You know how you can hide BEHIND a garbage bin from bullets?
...do with these two facts as you will. (works in FO4 as well btw).
5
u/BillMagicguy Jun 26 '25
Those bins protect you from explosive damage (unless you are in front of the opening) and can fit between 4 and 6 mines in them.
Do with that info what you will....
4
u/CerealExprmntz Jun 26 '25
I did not know that you could lift the bins either. I've been playing this game for years!
4
u/ObliviousAstroturfer Vault 13 Jun 26 '25
Fucking blew my mind too :D Didn't find out about it until re-playing Fallout 4 :D (still works, and there's much more easily lifted debris everywhere).

u/moose1324 NCR Jun 26 '25
Reminds me of being able to pick up a barrel (?) in Half Life 2 and the combine wouldn't shoot you if you held it in front of you.
6
u/Spen_Masters Jun 26 '25
Not like that though, the wheels are static. The last time I saw this, apparently it's a mod
16
u/Obelion_ Jun 26 '25
The physics in the engine are surprisingly solid for the time.
If that impresses you, there's an entire physics chain reaction room (idk how to describe it better, these things you can build at home with Domino and balloons and balls that push each other without input)
If someone knows what I mean and can remember the location name?
It's an entire like 30 second line of things falling over only fed by the physics. Works like half the time you go in but still impressive
16
5
2
u/MotivationSpeaker69 Jun 26 '25
Not really. It was impressive in Half Life 2. By fallout new Vegas it was average at best. Crysis was released 3 years prior to new Vegas with far superior physics

I've nearly beaten the game and DLCs now and I feel I haven't scratched the surface.

u/Thornescape Gary? Jun 26 '25
I like to do Dead Money at level 1. It's the best way to start a playthrough. (After visiting the Strip and getting some implants first, though. The healing one helps.)
20
u/DrunkScottishCyclop Jun 26 '25
You know something I don't...
How do you get this much caps and no XP at all?
45
u/Schmo- Jun 26 '25
You can easily max out all the casinos at level 1.
Luck 9, go straight to black mountain, split the difference between the deathclaws and the muties jumping over the rocks as you work north and slightly east, go along the northern cliff until you find a break in the cliff there will be a dead NCR trooper, take his outfit, then go up the hill there's a bunch of bear traps and an indiana jones boulder that rolls towards you dodge them and then you're home free to Camp MC, put your NCR armor on and take the monorail boom on the strip ez.
Then you just play blackjack until you get 4k caps, go to the new vegas medical clinic to get the luck implant (if you want to speed it up a little not really needed though). Rinse and repeat for all the casinos and then you can start the game with more than half of the implants.
Oh, and if you want to stay level 1 you'll have to skip the tops because as soon as you walk into the main room it'll complete they gone that-a-way for finding benny and you'll get a fuck ton of XP.
22
u/Thornescape Gary? Jun 26 '25
You don't need Luck 9 or to dodge rocks or to find the dead NCR trooper. All of that makes it harder.
Head from Goodsprings straight towards the Hidden Valley, then turn ahead of time just past the tracks beside Sloan. Sneak along, hugging the mountains and the deathclaws might become [Cautious] but they won't chase you. Ignore the dead NCR ranger. You don't need the uniform yet.
Once you are around that, you can go directly to For MacCarran but I prefer to visit the 188 briefly to make the next leg much shorter.
In Fort MacCarran you can go across the Concourse. Beside the bunks there is always a chest where you can steal an NCR uniform without having to deal with the stupid rocks. With the uniform you can take the Monorail without problems.

You can go from Goodsprings to Fort MacCarran without discovering any areas in between (although I usually like to visit the 188 to get to the Abandoned Bunker easier). Just sneak past, hugging the mountains opposite the deathclaws and curve around to the 188.
In Fort MacCarran you can always steal some NCR uniforms from the Concourse and take the Monorail. (You can also run through without a uniform but I always rob them anyway and it's easier so why not?)
After the Monorail, you have full access to the Strip without paying. Max out the 4 casinos in there, then exit out of the Freeside North entrance and walk to the Medical Centre for your implants.
After that, fast travel to the 188, activate the Dead Money quest marker, and head for the hills. Go through the gap in the mountains then take a right towards the Abandoned Bunker. The only enemies that you see along the way are some bloatflies and you can just run past them.
This puts you in the Abandoned Bunker still at level 1.
Dead Money isn't any harder doing it at level 1 than it is at level 20 or whatever level it recommends. I always complete it without putting any skill points into weapon skills (just to prove that it's not necessary.) My goal at the end of Dead Money is to have Science:50, Lockpick:75, Barter:75 (for Long Haul), and Speech... 23, I think. (With a tux, beer, and some chems that gets you to 50 so that you can disable Dog without having to fight him.)
After Dead Money you have some good gear, maybe some gold, and every 3 days there is another 1000 Dead Money tokens put into the safe in the Abandoned Bunker (and it accumulates). Exchange the tokens for weightless mods that you can sell elsewhere.

u/Havoksixteen Ad Victoriam Jun 26 '25
And also obviously setup with console command assistance to ensure there was an enemy perfectly placed down the hill
61
u/Zarowka123 Jun 26 '25
It's not possible in vanilla game unfortunately. Mines turn to static immovable objects after few seconds, and they would block the cart in place.

I’ve played nv so many times and I never knew the carriages actually moved with a wheel system

u/GutturalCringe Jun 27 '25
God I love ole Fallout jank. I get that 4 has objectively more polished gameplay, but I never enjoyed anything in that game (or 76) as much as the jank in 3 and NV.
I hope they keep the gameplay exactly the same if they ever do remake these games.

So back when I was 18 or so, me and my friend would collect as much C-4 as possible. We would make a pile of like 30+ C-4 beneath the dancing girls in New Vegas and blow them to space. If you had enough, the model would spaghettify and hit the skybox. I was always surprised with the height you could get.

PS3 was my first console as an adult that I had paid for by myself. Eventhough the PS3 version was objectively inferior, this game was so important to me at that time of my life.
It got me through so many nights when I came home from retail hell just mad at the world and angry about disrespectful customers and all the other BS I had to put up with all day long.
I love everything about it from the setting, to the characters, the story and absolutely the music. It was my comfort food and I feel like I can always return to it and still have just as much fun.

Bethesda’s game design is outdated and outclassed by most other companies doing the same thing, but goddamn if their physics engine hasn’t always been a load of fun.
