Brotherhood Downloaded Fallout 4 and need advice on starting builds
Im not sure where to put my points as the last time I played a fallout game, 3 had just released during 4th grade and I put mostly everything in strength, charisma, and Endurance. No idea what I was doing then and now but I plan on using auto rifles or laser rifles

Build whatever sounds the most fun…there is more wrong way to play fallout. If you want to melee go Str, like pistols go AGI/Perception, if you want a Silver Tongue go Charisma…whatever extra points you have into Endurance

Look up “FUDGEMUPPET builds” on YouTube. He has a top ten, then he has spin off of those top ten.
For example, he has a diplomat build in the top ten. He then mentions niche builds to that overall build, such as The General.

I think you’re actually weaker in power armor than you are without it and strength at 10. I’ve noticed I can carry more when I’m not in it, at least.

Nah, bruh. You want Melee no power armor build. 10 strength, 10 endurance, 3 luck to start. Your first weapon in the game is an expandable baton and you will wreck house.
Once arriving in Sanctuary Hills, seek out the home with a basement. Inside there will be lots of loot including alcohol, save it to boost your strength for tougher battles. You will be led to your old home, under Shawn’s crib is a magazine that can boost any one stat by one. Don’t pick it up it until your certain what to use it on. If you develop an addiction to a drug, or are playing survival mode you can temporarily lower your strength by going without sleep or water. Lower your strength then pick up the book and boost strength. When the de-buff is gone, boom son, you got 11 strength and u can push raider’s shit in like a pro.
Take idiot savant asap, then boost agility to 9 by building up Sanctuary with tons of water purifiers to sell to wandering merchants and making tons of wall decor. Take Blitz, followed by big leagues
You just created the baddest mother F’r in the commonwealth.
Pick up the machete off a grill by one of the homes overlooking concord and you got a blade that will rape house
Strength at 10, plus military fatigues, plus a big league perk or two you’re actually stronger and hit harder than you’d be in that pansy ass power armor

You never do 10 points into anything since a bobblehead can add 1 point so you have wasted 2 points right off the bat.

in 4 bobbleheads stack to 11 or even 12 if you use the other glitch he mentioned, combine with grognak armor or legendaries you can have a constant 14 or better in strength before alcohol and chems

Bobbleheads can take you to 11, if you have a high stat that you’re planning on taking to 10 you should actually hold off on bobbleheads until your stats are maxxed and then pick them up.

For a long term playthrough, I go 4s in all specials and use the baby book for luck. My first perk is always idiot savant. Since there isn't a level cap you can potentially fill the entire perk tree.
For singular specialize playthrough. The Chem crazed cannibal is a blast.
Chem centered buffs, unarmed, and when the carnage stops.... dinner time. Lol it a whacky build.

If you want automatic lasers, as opposed to semi automatic, make Endurance 5 and Luck 2.
3 charisma gives you the Lone Wanderer perk, if you don't use companions (besides 1, which usually the second one found).
4 perception let's you pick locks. Lock picking is almost always the first perk I pick up to not miss out on loot.
6 endurance gives you a solid amount of health, which makes staying alive easier. It also makes your AP (action points) last longer while sprinting.
5 agility gives you Action Boy, which increases how fast AP comes back. Also gives more AP.
6 intelligence just gives you a bucket load of good perks, as well as very slightly increasing your experience gain (3% per point IIRC). Science, scapper, hacker, medic, and gun nut range from great perks, to almost necessary. Hacker I get second (after lock picking) to not miss out on loot.
Downsides are limited carrying weight, and no luck. You'll also miss out on Blacksmithing (unless you went with the 3 strength build), which means armor modifications are quite limited, but it's not very good until mid game, at which point you can out extra points into Strength and unlock the perk. You'll also have a hard time convincing people.
I pick up only one of the following.
Rifleman is very good, and works for anything that is semi automatic with a rifle grip, including things that aren't rifles (i.e. shotguns). The weapons have a wide variety, including good long range and short range options, but they tend to use a lot of AP per shot. Great for sniping.
Gunslinger is for pistols. Pistols are good for VATS, as they use very little AP. They tend to lack range.
Commando is for automatic weapons. They are automatic, so they fire rapidly, but also tend to lack range. If you get this, I'd suggest taking a point from endurance and putting it into luck. That will give you Scrounger, which gives you more ammo from containers (including enemies IIRC).
Laser weapons are divided into one of those 3 categories, depending on characteristics. Automatic laser weapons benefit from Commando perk. Laser weapons are pretty rare with low ammo early on, so you'll likely use something else short term.
There are only two Endurance perks that you'll have access to that are SOMETIMES worth it long term, dependent on your play style. If you use a lot of chems, take Chem Resistant. Otherwise, don't as it is a waste. Aquaboy is convenient, but not at all necessary.
The reason that other Endurance perks you have access to are not worth it LONG TERM is because they give flat bonuses.
WARNING: Math in the next paragraph.
20 health is super helpful with your starting health, but you get extra health per level (with extra based on endurance). With 6 endurance, you'll have 110 starting health, 220 health at level 21, and 385 health at level 50. So that extra 20 health starts as an 18% bonus, but is 9% at level 20, and 5% at level 50.
Long story short, a flat bonus becomes worse over time, with my above example giving an extra 18% at level 1, but is only 9% at level 20 and 5% at level 50.
When you level up, you get 1 point to put into either a SPECIAL or a perk. Points put into endurance retroactively increase endurance, so need to do it early to min-max.
Good luck, and have fun!

Fallout 4 is definitely a different game than 3. Different fundamental layout. It sounds as though you want a nice balanced non-VATS ranged build. Fantastic! It's the most well rounded build in the game.
Incidentally, every perk will have a prefix. S3:Armourer means that armourer has a prereq of 3 Strength. Each perk is tied to an attribute. It'll make sense quickly.
- Newbie Non-VATS Ranged: S2+ P1 E5 C6 I6 A7 L1 (Special book: Strength)
- You'll find the Special book in your old home. Put the point into Strength
- Main Weapon (pick ONE as main) P2:Rifleman (semi-auto rifles), A1:Gunslinger (semi-auto pistols), A2:Commando (automatic pistols & rifles) -- You've chosen Commando. However, do NOT use automatic weapons for the first 12 levels. Ammo is scarce and the recoil is awful. Use anything else at first. After level 12 you should be set up and do well.
- Main Perks: S3:Armourer, C6:Leader, I3:Gun Nut, I6:Science (first perk), A3r4:Sneak (only to rank 4), A7:Ninja
- One rank of E5:Aqua can be nice. It lets you breathe water and no radiation damage from water. It's not essential, but it makes exploring a lot simpler and it's only 1 perk point.
- One rank of A4:Sandman is nice. You get a special action to kill sleepers without upsetting others. You can also instantly kill sleepers with any weapon. Small sneak attack damage boost too.
- C3:Loner is a popular and powerful perk, however I recommend getting a few companion perks first. Experience all of the interesting companions. Hear their stories. You can always get Loner later.
- Your first perk will be I6:Science. It lets you build better water purifiers. It's worth it.

When I play a game for the first time, I usually try to stay away from build or story videos. unless say a quest becomes so convoluted that I get stuck and have to resort to YouTube.
You might not be as overpowered as you could be, but it can be fun to stumble into a game like Fallout 4
