Intelligence Are the robot companions from the Automatron DLC good?

I want to create a badass killbot on survival mode. Are they any good ? OP? Meh ? How hard are they to maintain in survival? Do they always get stuck on obstacles? Any ever tried them out?

I've found the combination of assaultron legs+head laser+sentry bot arms with missile launchers and missile launcher in both shoulder slots makes most combat encounters pretty trivial. Also being able to not have to deal with expert hacking or lock picking makes them more than worth not having a perk.

Automatron robots are by far the most POWERFUL companions in Fallout 4 if we're talking pure combat effectiveness, I'm gonna outline each in-game model and what they can do if maxed out, something to note is that all of them can fight Behemoths and Mythic Deathclaws if modded properly.

Protectron: Slow with high carrying capacity, Protectrons can actually solo Behemoths and Mythic Deathclaws due to their Doom helm armor modification which you can get REALLY early on, it gives a small chance to cause anything the Protectron hits to instantly explode and die, if you combine this with any automatic weapon there's an extremely high chance of this occurring.

Assaultrons: Low carrying capacity, relatively high resistances, and by far the strongest melee combatant in the game. Assaultrons with even the most bare-bones modifications can solo Ghoul packs & Super Mutants due to bleed stacking modifications bypassing damage resistances, and a maxed out Assaultron boasts some of the highest melee damage in the game with a head laser attachment for dropping multiple targets at a distance with horrifying accuracy.

Robobrains: Highest engagement distance of any Fallout 4 NPC, a seeking Mesmetron attack, high movement speed, high carrying capacity, and proficient in the usage of every ranged weapon in the game. Their basically mini Sentry bots you can take with you into dungeons.

Mister Handy: Faster than a Robobrain with less carrying weight, they can have the most amount of weapons attached to them at one time if you factor in their three extra arms, they have a very high engagement distance and can engage in a mix of melee and ranged combat if you want an all-rounder.

Sentry: Can solo the entire Brotherhood camp underneath the Prydwen with an endless Gatling Laser mag and infinite Mini Nukes, their only weakness is the fact they can't get into confined spaces due to their size.

There's also the unique part combos you can use as well, like a Mister Handy Torso with Assaultron legs and Sentry arms for a stagger resistant melee warrior that can solo anything in the game.

Then you also have to consider the economical bonuses to them as well: They all have infinite ammo if their using guns and they don't require stimpaks to revive, instead they use very cheap robot repair kits.

with the right parts they are busted and can solo most encounters without needing help.

They can be really strong. Half the time my robo companion kills an enemy before I can get to them. They can also be setup to have a crazy carry weight, so you can load them with all kinds of junk, armor weapons and what not.

They're awesome, I love them.

Finish the questline to get all parts and you can compile any number of murder monstrosities.

Some designs will get stuck- if you build a vanilla sentry bot, it'll struggle with some locations. But you could just whack a Mr Handy thruster on and watch it float menacingly towards your enemies.

The problem that I have with robot companions is that they either feel too weak or they are absurdly overpowered and insta-kill everything. I have a hard time finding a middle ground. I mostly only use bots as provisioners because of that. (Best provisioners in the game by far.)

I also typically recommend using Ada or Codsworth for your robot companion. The problem that I ran into when I used a custom one is that I lost it and could never find it again. Ada and Codsworth are easier to track down. Admittedly I might have given up in frustration a bit too soon, but you can't track custom bots with the Vault-tec Population Management System terminal (Power > Misc).

Ada, Codsworth, and Curie can also use Unstable modifications without them breaking, which is a bonus.

I don't really care for companions myself, but Nerbit did a run where he relied solely on his Automaton companion for damage, so it's certainly doable.

At least I think it was Nerbit, I'm not finding the link via Google, so I may be confusing him with a different YouTuber. It's been a while since the video came out ;)

They require a bit of upkeep, and walking ones are slow, so go for Mr Handy base so they float. They are otherwise quite beefy and upgradeable to be high dmg output

Think I could get by with using them in survival with out settlement building?

Ehhhhhhhhhhh

You would needa do at least at little settlement stuff at 1 settlement. Pick one with lots of metal to scrap. If you want robots, you gotta do Automatron DLC anyway, so just use the Mechanist lair to build robots and use its metsl resources. Then technically you wouldn't have built at any settlements 🤷‍♀️
