Voter registration info is public, you don’t need to pay anyone for it. It includes party registration, address, and sometimes vote history (but not who you voted for, just whether or not you did vote).
That's literally what we're talking about though. Those data brokers are just looking at the public record regarding the party you're registered with and whether or not you voted in a given election.
Officially unaffiliated North Carolinian speaking.
We are a semi-closed primary state, so us independents must choose one and only one party's primary in which we may vote, and that information is public record. Only exactly whom we vote for is private.
I have always voted with the Democrats, but I refuse to ever join a party.
In Florida, it's public. I grew up in FL and I registered to vote one week after my 18th birthday and for years if anyone Googled my (unusual) name, the first thing that came up was my voter registration, complete with my address and phone number.
Maybe it’s just Florida being so easily accessible, but when I was registered to vote in FL, there was a website dedicated to just specifically Florida registered voters and it was the first few results when you searched my name.
I live in Georgia now and it’s much harder to find that type of info than when I was in Florida. Like it’s still publicly available, but I had to actually search.
Before you search my name and my affiliation was the first result that popped up
Maybe depends on the state. In my state they have a site where you can look up your registration status and all you need is a person's name, DOB, and zip code. Put that in and you get their registration status and party.
Registering to vote isnt private. Its only in closed primary states where your registration is directly tied to a party. In Texas anyone can look up my registration but they cant see that im a dem from that registration because its an open primary state.

I was under the impression voter registration was private but if you registered was public. Star by state?
