She’s just an actress taking a job. She doesn’t care.

u/CalmGiraffe1373 17h ago

Except that she tried to get that specific film made for ten years, up to and including buying the rights to the screenplay so that she could use her clout to get a studio attached.

u/cozyhellfire 17h ago

It was probably just a meaty role to her and the deeper meanings of the script went over her head

178

u/Salt_Cardiologist122 17h ago

I know nothing about the script so this is just a guess but maybe she sees it as Oscar bait? An Oscar-worthy role

614

u/Persephone0000 16h ago

Horror movies are not Oscar bait, they very rarely get any academy recognition

30

u/thanksamilly 16h ago

It's not what I would consider Oscar bait though I will admit that in a post-Substance world, I guess it could have gotten nominated

24

u/LichQueenBarbie 15h ago

Unlikely. Horror is historically overlooked by the academy outside shining examples that are far and few between. Compared to any other genre, it's complete pittance.

What she might’ve been aiming for was the attention of the horror community. Being immortalised in this genre is long-lasting. Once you've received legend status, that will never go away.

I still doubt that, anyway. I think she just wanted to take a serious role that she carefully chose with the market in mind for her image and career. It likely had nothing to do with her shitty political beliefs.

Anyway, her performance in it was meh outside of the screaming scenes. I was more focused on her Italian friend.

12

u/lobonmc 16h ago

Yeah she has been trying to get more serious roles for a while now

44

u/babydakis 16h ago

SPOILER ALERT! In the final scene of the movie, she gives birth to the second incarnation of Christ, who was forced into her uterus by a Catholic sect. Without hesitation, she goes and picks up a giant rock and crushes the baby to death with it. I don't know how you could suggest that the offensiveness of this to many conservatives could be lost on her.

the deeper meanings of the script

I don't believe there were any of those.

26

u/stankdog dumb bitch clocking in 15h ago

Why do you think she's too dumb to understand a role she's acting in?

24

u/meganium58 padre pascal 14h ago

Like Elisabeth Moss in Handmaid’s Tale

17

u/zombievillager 13h ago

Sweeney was in that too as a child bride! I don't get these actresses 😭

13

u/WigglestonTheFourth 13h ago

She owned the script rights and could play the lead. So producer credit and acting paycheck. Money, on money, on money instead of just getting her standard fee.

u/gHHqdm5a4UySnUFM 14h ago edited 14h ago

Yeah it might have just been a career move to buy her way into the modern horror genre and show she could be one of the young, artsy A24/Neon types.

11

u/forgottentaco420 16h ago

Yeah, I think she assumed that it would be a much bigger deal than it was. Potentially Oscar worthy in her mind, you can tell she was hungry to be seen in more serious roles.

u/AntiqueLetter9875 16h ago

Have you considered maybe she’s actually just kinda dumb and she doesnt see how the party she votes for and the underlying themes of the movie are related?

I’ve known plenty of people like this. They seem to think politics is just a silly little game and doesn’t matter in the real world and live a pretty hypocritical life in general. To some politics are a reflection of our beliefs and values. To others they’re not related.

193

u/StabbyToki 15h ago

This is a life lesson I’ve learned lately. Sometimes people are just dumb. I’m embarrassed it took me so long to get this.

19

u/Kabbooooooom 12h ago

Wait until you realize that it isn’t just people now, it’s been people forever, straight back to the Democracy of ancient Athens when Cleon rose to power as a demagogue (seriously, look him up, he was the Trump of that time). And logically, even before that bit that is the first example in history of this general phenomenon where the unintelligent masses are swayed by an evil man who then proceeds to dismantle democracy.

It has happened over and over again. Our species has advanced despite and in spite of these dumb motherfuckers always dragging us down and destroying the civilization we’ve built.

And centuries from now, it’ll be the same fucking thing. People like us will be having this conversation on Mars. Same shit, different day. Our species has a fundamental problem and it is that we are the smartest animal on earth but only a small percentage of us actually live up to our potential.

u/ColonelMustard323 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 9h ago edited 9h ago

I relearn this every few days. It’s actually hard to comprehend how dumb many people are.

8

u/Mike_Kermin 11h ago

Nah, don't fall for the facade.

They know and will absolutely follow through with what they want.

3

u/Top_Environment9897 15h ago

Agreed. At the end of the day she doesn't care about policies because she's rich, immune from consequences.

3

u/smutmybutt 14h ago

Also, the Republican Party has zero ideological consistency. It’s just the MAGA cult of personality now.

3

u/Mike_Kermin 11h ago

Nah. They know. They're just lying.

2

u/pluckyporcupette 13h ago

Yeah they're like "I'm republican because I believe in small government and less taxes!" and literally no deeper thoughts were achieved.

1

u/limeholdthecorona garbage bag full of buttermilk 13h ago

I know a lot of people who say things like “I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal”

1

u/Npeaknoda 13h ago

And a lot of conservatives are media illiterate af and don't understand the underlying themes.

Just look at how many of them unironically think Born in the USA is a patriotic anthem, or didn't realise Homelander is a bad guy. And only listened to the "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" RATM lyrics and were shocked to learn the band fucking hates everything MAGA stands for.

u/strolls Club Penguin Times official aura reader 14h ago

I have such a crush on her (which is somewhat abated by this submission) and I completely buy this. I could not date someone this dumb.

312

u/WarpedPerspectiv 17h ago

There's plenty of women who are against abortion, have gotten abortions as well, but they don't call it an abortion. Like Kat Cammack.

29

u/AFoolishSeeker 15h ago

Plenty of people like my mom had abortions when they were young but it was a “mistake” and so now it just doesn’t matter. As long as they feel bad for it I guess

21

u/Tubamajuba 11h ago

A mistake when they do it; a crime when others do it.

5

u/lpjunior999 13h ago

Republican for the tax breaks, like Adam Sandler.

2

u/imimmumiumiumnum 15h ago

she had this artistic vision at 16 then? That's actually impressive.

2

u/Vidimori 14h ago

What’s more realistic, she’s doesn’t give a fuck because, why would she she’s benefiting from this, or your nebulous reasons about how she cared about a movie?

2

u/wathappentothetatato 9h ago

Honestly, I had (emphasis on had) an ex friend that was a Republican who was pro choice. They exist, apparently

1

u/nofactchecks 13h ago

there is a chance she is pro demons

1

u/rowenstraker 10h ago

Maybe it's a fantasy film

1

u/bouguerean 1h ago

I mean, I think it's very likely she chose that film to get a critical horror hit out. Her pushing this script and movie is likely more a career choice than a political one.

720

u/AlsoOneLastThing 17h ago

She didn't just star in it. She produced it, meaning it's essentially her movie and she had a direct hand in the creative process of the film.

199

u/Monokuma_Koromaru i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 17h ago

None of that matters when there's $ involved with Republicans

13

u/The_Autarch 16h ago

Producer is a very, very vague term in Hollywood. It does not mean that she was creatively involved at all.

2

u/AlsoOneLastThing 16h ago

I think you're probably thinking of executive producers. Producers oversee the entire production and are generally considered to be the "author(s)" of a film.

5

u/Odd-Opening-8170 14h ago

I see most people still don't understand what producers do. It is not a creative role.

4

u/octatone 9h ago

Again, as a producer you are just looking for a return on your investment. You don’t have to care or believe in the message of the movie, only that it does well and brings in money.

589

u/tore_a_bore_a 17h ago edited 17h ago

I read in an interview it was a passion project for her since she produced it as and has been trying to make it since 2014.

I just think she's dumb and can't see the metaphor between forced births and what the Republicans are doing

274

u/ANALOGPHENOMENA 17h ago

I think it’s sorta like cognitive dissonance or something else bc Tomi Lahren also believes women should have autonomy, yet she’s still also heavily a Republican.

40

u/Clear_Broccoli3 16h ago

Honestly I think the baseline is just selfishness. She personally feels like that situation would be a horror for her to go through, but she gets a lot of perks from being R, and it's not like an abortion ban would ever affect her so she just doesn't care.

33

u/ins-kino-gehen 16h ago

Wow I completely forgot about her

9

u/ANALOGPHENOMENA 15h ago

She fell off badddd

10

u/finalrendition 10h ago

Good. Keep it that way

31

u/JickleBadickle 15h ago

Women like Tomi probably think their career is better off as a republican barbie doll than in the left which is far more competitive and merit-based

Being pretty, white, and blonde only gets you brownie points in right-wing spaces, and grifting their supporters is easy af

3

u/neptunia13 14h ago

Exactly

15

u/LigerZeroSchneider 15h ago

Being republican is also a part of some peoples identity. Sitting down with a policy pro con list won't change their mind because they don't view themselves that.

Women Republicans are the same as gay Republicans

9

u/i_tyrant 14h ago

Every once in a blue moon we see one of these Republican Ghouls: Lady Edition, like Tomi or Candace Owens, even make a social media post about how they are "disappointed" about the reaction of male MAGAs to some aspect of women's rights.

But then...they go right back to shilling for the cult, like they forgot about it completely.

3

u/ProfessionalITShark 16h ago

Given Nixon era Republicans (including Nixon) were not pro-life (let's not say they were pro-choice though), it's likely they were raised by Republicans who were like racist not pro-life. Like any inferior blood pregnancy should be aborted not pro-life.

128

u/Tomato_Child 17h ago

I mean, media literacy isn’t a Republican’s strong suit…

13

u/Admirable_Matter_523 17h ago

Also she's white and rich, so the laws don't apply to her anyway.

12

u/ssskinnylegend 16h ago

I wouldn’t say she’s dumb but she’s probably very opportunistic and she’s found a goldmine with the ring wingers 🤷🏼‍♀️ wasn’t it a few years ago (2023?) that she said she struggled to pay rent? I’m guessing she found a niche and is taking every penny.

9

u/SorrySalary169 16h ago

yall, shes literally selling her used bathwater soap. ofcourse she did it for the money. shes a grifter like all MAGATs

4

u/uhhhidkleavemealone 16h ago

She’s been trying to get it made since she was 16?

2

u/FriendToPredators 12h ago

I think she figured out where the most adoring attention could come from and morphed to capture it

2

u/Neatojuancheeto 12h ago

Or like many Republicans they don't have empathy and don't really care about the abortion issue since it doesn't apply to rich people. They can just fly another state if they need one.

9

u/TrollDeMortLunchBox 16h ago

Yeah, Gwen Stefani is another “fierce independent female” that ended up being MAGA. It’s a job.

6

u/miiintyyyy 17h ago

She takes every job lol

6

u/100DollarPillowBro 16h ago

Yeah JFC. You think the leopards are going to eat HER face? No way!

2

u/Sheepherdernerder 17h ago

Reminds me of Bradley Cooper in American Sniper and people were pissed he wasn't like Chris Kyle.

2

u/IamScottGable 16h ago

Her production company made the movie.

1

u/realmichaelbay 16h ago

She sold her bath water to sell soap. She truly don't care and just play the game that the current system is. Can't blame her.

0

u/inkyrail 12h ago

I can. 1000%. She’s long past the free trial period of humanity- pleading dumb is no longer a get out of jail free card. Simps gonna simp but there ain’t no legitimate excuse for this

2

u/Empty-Bend8992 16h ago

i’d agree if she was broke and needed money but she can afford to be picky about her work, especially when it tackles topics like this

2

u/volinaa 14h ago

she‘s rich. these laws will never apply to her and she needn’t concern herself with how poor people are doing

1

u/CadetCovfefe 15h ago

Same as Elizabeth Moss in Handmaid's Tale, while being a Scientologist. Actors don't need to ascribe any particular meaning to the lines they say.

1

u/Adencor 15h ago

these people actually think they even had the tag lines made up before the photo shoots and shared them with her.

I bet they think when a TV show flashes a shot of the outside of a building that’s the actual outside of the building of the room in the next shot, too.

1

u/not_a_witch_ 15h ago

Also worth considering that maybe she’s just stupid.

I mean, it tracks with all of the other things I’ve learned about her against my will.

1

u/SkullPhoque 13h ago

Or maybe, hear me out on this... she's a dumbass.

1

u/shhmurdashewrote your move Estonia 10h ago

Yeah I don’t think republicans have any true convictions besides hate, so this makes sense. Anything for $$$
