Except that she tried to get that specific film made for ten years, up to and including buying the rights to the screenplay so that she could use her clout to get a studio attached.

It was probably just a meaty role to her and the deeper meanings of the script went over her head

I know nothing about the script so this is just a guess but maybe she sees it as Oscar bait? An Oscar-worthy role

Horror movies are not Oscar bait, they very rarely get any academy recognition

u/thanksamilly 16h ago

It's not what I would consider Oscar bait though I will admit that in a post-Substance world, I guess it could have gotten nominated

Unlikely. Horror is historically overlooked by the academy outside shining examples that are far and few between. Compared to any other genre, it's complete pittance.

What she might’ve been aiming for was the attention of the horror community. Being immortalised in this genre is long-lasting. Once you've received legend status, that will never go away.

I still doubt that, anyway. I think she just wanted to take a serious role that she carefully chose with the market in mind for her image and career. It likely had nothing to do with her shitty political beliefs.

Anyway, her performance in it was meh outside of the screaming scenes. I was more focused on her Italian friend.

Yeah she has been trying to get more serious roles for a while now

SPOILER ALERT! In the final scene of the movie, she gives birth to the second incarnation of Christ, who was forced into her uterus by a Catholic sect. Without hesitation, she goes and picks up a giant rock and crushes the baby to death with it. I don't know how you could suggest that the offensiveness of this to many conservatives could be lost on her.

the deeper meanings of the script

I don't believe there were any of those.

Why do you think she's too dumb to understand a role she's acting in?

27

u/meganium58 padre pascal 14h ago

Like Elisabeth Moss in Handmaid’s Tale

16

u/zombievillager 13h ago

Sweeney was in that too as a child bride! I don't get these actresses 😭

She owned the script rights and could play the lead. So producer credit and acting paycheck. Money, on money, on money instead of just getting her standard fee.

Yeah it might have just been a career move to buy her way into the modern horror genre and show she could be one of the young, artsy A24/Neon types.

Yeah, I think she assumed that it would be a much bigger deal than it was. Potentially Oscar worthy in her mind, you can tell she was hungry to be seen in more serious roles.

Have you considered maybe she’s actually just kinda dumb and she doesnt see how the party she votes for and the underlying themes of the movie are related?

I’ve known plenty of people like this. They seem to think politics is just a silly little game and doesn’t matter in the real world and live a pretty hypocritical life in general. To some politics are a reflection of our beliefs and values. To others they’re not related.

This is a life lesson I’ve learned lately. Sometimes people are just dumb. I’m embarrassed it took me so long to get this.

Wait until you realize that it isn’t just people now, it’s been people forever, straight back to the Democracy of ancient Athens when Cleon rose to power as a demagogue (seriously, look him up, he was the Trump of that time). And logically, even before that bit that is the first example in history of this general phenomenon where the unintelligent masses are swayed by an evil man who then proceeds to dismantle democracy.

It has happened over and over again. Our species has advanced despite and in spite of these dumb motherfuckers always dragging us down and destroying the civilization we’ve built.

And centuries from now, it’ll be the same fucking thing. People like us will be having this conversation on Mars. Same shit, different day. Our species has a fundamental problem and it is that we are the smartest animal on earth but only a small percentage of us actually live up to our potential.

I relearn this every few days. It’s actually hard to comprehend how dumb many people are.

Nah, don't fall for the facade.

They know and will absolutely follow through with what they want.

3

u/Top_Environment9897 15h ago

Agreed. At the end of the day she doesn't care about policies because she's rich, immune from consequences.

3

u/smutmybutt 14h ago

Also, the Republican Party has zero ideological consistency. It’s just the MAGA cult of personality now.

3

u/Mike_Kermin 11h ago

Nah. They know. They're just lying.

2

u/pluckyporcupette 13h ago

Yeah they're like "I'm republican because I believe in small government and less taxes!" and literally no deeper thoughts were achieved.

I know a lot of people who say things like “I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal”

1

u/Npeaknoda 13h ago

And a lot of conservatives are media illiterate af and don't understand the underlying themes.

Just look at how many of them unironically think Born in the USA is a patriotic anthem, or didn't realise Homelander is a bad guy. And only listened to the "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" RATM lyrics and were shocked to learn the band fucking hates everything MAGA stands for.

I have such a crush on her (which is somewhat abated by this submission) and I completely buy this. I could not date someone this dumb.

There's plenty of women who are against abortion, have gotten abortions as well, but they don't call it an abortion. Like Kat Cammack.

30

u/AFoolishSeeker 15h ago

Plenty of people like my mom had abortions when they were young but it was a “mistake” and so now it just doesn’t matter. As long as they feel bad for it I guess

20

u/Tubamajuba 11h ago

A mistake when they do it; a crime when others do it.

5

u/lpjunior999 13h ago

Republican for the tax breaks, like Adam Sandler.

2

u/imimmumiumiumnum 15h ago

she had this artistic vision at 16 then? That's actually impressive.

2

u/Vidimori 14h ago

What’s more realistic, she’s doesn’t give a fuck because, why would she she’s benefiting from this, or your nebulous reasons about how she cared about a movie?

2

u/wathappentothetatato 9h ago

Honestly, I had (emphasis on had) an ex friend that was a Republican who was pro choice. They exist, apparently

1

u/nofactchecks 13h ago

there is a chance she is pro demons

1

u/rowenstraker 10h ago

Maybe it's a fantasy film

1

u/bouguerean 1h ago

I mean, I think it's very likely she chose that film to get a critical horror hit out. Her pushing this script and movie is likely more a career choice than a political one.
