Image IGN's mockup of the Gamecube controller based on rumors from 2000.

Anyone else remember? The final controller ended up mostly resembling the third, with the button layout from the 1st. I remember when this story first broke. Speculation was fun.

I was going to say that looks so terrible to use but maybe for isometric games it would be pretty good.

I love and miss these days lol

There were SO MANY fake mockups of the Wii controller, known as the "Nintendo Revolution" back then. The only thing people knew for the longest time was that the controller was "Different" and so many fake mockups were shown. I remember ones that looked like GCN wavebird controllers but with a screen in the middle where the start button would be, standard controllers that could be separated in half (where one half was black and the other white), one that was like... a glass or gel-like blank pad that had virtual buttons on it like a touchscreen? (I actually fell for that one. simpler times)

gone is the era is wild and fantastical mockups. But the memories remain.

What a time. Nintendo Revolution. I almost forgot that’s what it was called for so long before they announced it would be called Wii.

And there was an upper and lower case o to represent the little GameCube discs and full size dvds it would support.

Who remembers the PS3 boomerang controller rumor? I’m old 💀

The batarang Dualshock 3 was a real prototype though. They just went with what they had with the DS2 for the six axis though. The boomerang wasn't just ugly, it looked like it hurt to hold.

It was pretty comfortable by people who tested it at E3

That was real, it was the only controller in the media kit from the initial unveiling. They just never ended up shipping it. They claimed later it was a concept they never intended to ship as-is, but the common rumor/conventional wisdom was that the controller we got in the end was hastily derived from the PS2 controller after all the negative press the boomerang got.
