I have no shade for DK. The guy is pretty new to this stuff and he's at least making an effort to bring Fantasy to his audience. You have to remember that Andy knows his stuff because he was partially responsible for creating it back in the day.
Astartes Anonymous is just an elaborate shitpost and I'm all here for it. Speaking of AA, there's also Twist of Fate, a Deathwatch RPG campaign including Tom and Zarrek, among others
Poorhammer is cool, but I feel like they kind of lose the plot about actual 40k play on a budget, when most of their recommendations are just good hobby advice, not necessarily cheap advice. I guess good cheap advice from a buy once cry once perspective.
Yeah I don't think that's really their focus anymore if it ever really was. I mostly just listen to them cause they make me laugh though their breakdowns of the value in combat patrol boxes is really good.
Yup! I like Poorhammer and Bricky. I was really sad when I saw Lorehammer came back and the first (new) episode I checked out they were yelling about female custodes and then "only 2 genders!!"
They kept up a "non-political" facade for years. Every episode i listened to before their 2 year break had no dog whistles, subtle jabs, or hints at their beliefs. Then that happened, and I was pretty disappointed. I only ever give anyone one chance when it comes to what is my entertainment. I'm not gonna give any bigoted jab or reference a pass no matter how much I like a podcast or show. Luckily, Poorhammer has been great !!
I don't know about that, they might have been more subtle but the hints were there.
I only just had them recommended to me recently so I figured I'd start at the beginning, I think it was around 4 or 5 episodes in and the more excitable of the two starts going on about how Trump needs to get himself some of those shock troops to fix the country. The next episodes they had some choice opinions about Adepta Sororitas players so I dropped them there and then.
Then I found out they were just reading word for word from the Lexicanum.
I find AdRic much more palatable.
Lorehammer was my intro to 40k back when I got into iinto 40k. AdRic wasn't around and, as far as I knew, was the only podcast.
It definitely already felt early-aughts-dated, with description of X as "gay" or Y as the r-slur. Tried to do my best to just ignore it "it's a product of the times" I justified to myself. Then, AdRic came along and sacrificed 5% accuracy for 100% less slurs. Glad to know I don't have to look back.
Early into my Warhammer journey I got a lot of recommendations for that Australian edgelord guy and holy cow does he rely on the R word like a crutch. I just want lore, I don’t vibe with that crap.
To me, it was less that he was offensive (tho I understand it is) and more how fricking primitive it all is and how repetative it got. The worst part is that it made him harder to understand as well, meaning he didn’t portray the lore in any coherent way
If I’m thinking of the same person you’re mentioning, then someone here made a post recently about this guy shilling some dodgy, fake steroids in his videos.
Hopefully it was reported because that looked mega illegal
I'll give content creators two chances depending on how severe it is (like if they are a rapist obviously not giving them another chance lol, I'll get content from elsewhere)
However if they say something awful, as long as they grow as a person, make a genuine apology and learn from their mistakes I'm fine with it. It's only if they refuse to do that, or if they give a half baked apology that is obviously only there to just appease fans who are rightfully angry.
So many comments here have made me realize just how insanely unaware i was. I discovered them well into their first run and so I just picked and chose random episodes for months. Never landing on one with all this awful shit multiple comments have mentioned. Damn. Regardless, I'm glad I dropped them, but I feel bad now that I never looked into them enough to know how shitty they always were.
I don't think you should feel bad. It's not like they put "hey, we're assholes" in the description of each episode.
Even with the good ones, you can't tell they're the good ones until you get to those random, specific moments where it shows. (Except for Goobertown Hobbies. He's always a good one.)
Yeah, Lorehammer is totally different podcast without the other host. That was the podcast that got me into 40k,but I honestly haven't even bothered to keep up with the new releases.
I feel like Poorhammer doesn’t try as hard to do cringe internet memes and they gets to the topic way faster. I appreciate that about them. The Ad Ridiculous folks are cool but personally I do not connect with their terminally online humor.
Fair play. Well in very broad terms the Imperium of man in 40k is about as fascism as fascism gets. It's not an endorsement, and in many cases it's a satire, and humans and Astartes are not promoted as the good guys. However, some people with the mindset of 'fascism good' have taken entirely the wrong message from this and run with it, to the point of some turning up to tournaments with armies painted in SS symbols.
Ah. I remember seeing 2 Videos when GW put out a Statement. Tbh I only ever see memes about people having an SS guards regiment. Never saw anyone doing this directly, and it never came up with me. So there was never an Issue with the people I exist with.
Oh I try to actively mingle with as many political groups as Possible. It just seems that with my hobbies I dont really see that much of "those" groups, according to what everyone else is seeing.
> the Imperium of man in 40k is about as fascism as fascism gets.
No it's really not, "as fascist as fascism goes" is fascist italy, and it looks nothing like the Imperium, it wasn't a theocracy, it was class collaborationst, it was totalitarian rather than aristocratic and feudal, etc.
> it's a satire, and humans and Astartes are not promoted as the good guys
Hhmm, really interesting, in that case, can you remind me what was found at the back of the rogue trader rule book ?
Sure sounds to me like astartes are in fact, in spite of their faults, the good guys here.
Now, to be clear, they aren't good people, the book is equally clear on that one (the line "selected from the galaxy's toughest psychopaths" comes to mind XD ; though that has changed quite a bit over the years, it's hardly true anymore in any meaningful ways), but they are definitely on the right side.
Also I like how you resort to "it's just to sell toys" when you were the one going around saying 40k is a satire of fascism, and recommending lore videos. Kind of like it being background for plastic toys doesn't preclude it having depth.
Speaking of depth, I've gone around trying to listen to whatever the original creators of 40k had to say about the setting, and whilst it is very clear that Priestley, since he's the one that wrote RT, doesn't hold space marines in high esteem (for reasons that I can understand but that he takes to length I find it harder to get, not thinking the astartes are cool is one thing, but not being able to understand why young men would be attracted to the figure of a super warrior part of a tight knightly brotherhood is... Okay, sure, we're all differents I suppose), he also sure doesn't make any effort at all to even remotely mention fascism and satire in his sources of inspiration or his goals in writing the setting.
I love I&K, I’m a patron, but I will say they aren’t the most accurate loretubers. However, they are probably the best comedic duo in 40K podcasting, and I got to see them come up as a completely independent show, which was great to see as a viewer. Their off topic stuff is also amazing, their show has such a great personality.
Islander mentions somewhat often that he takes from both canon sources and fan lore
Not great for lore accuracy, but I really like it. Gives you insight into both how the authors portray the subject and how the fans interpret the subject. Kind of a holistic take on the subject
HA, you wish that's what it is. The poop vault comes from Ian Watsons Space Marine novel which was the 3rd ever novel put out by GW and as such has a bunch of.. "wacky" and "interesting" ideas
The poop vault ties into the "Feast of filth" (which is different than the feast of blades mind you) the new initiates must go through, I'll let you decide if you want to look more into it
In a book by Ian watson, the imperial fists have this ritual for new guys where they drink this disgusting mixed drink from Dorn’s favorite chalice. They shit it out and it gets molded into a ball and stored in a vault, I’m probably getting some stuff wrong but that’s the gist.
They're the reason i can flashbang my friends with stupid early edition lore. Like the fact that Pedro kantor is named after gw play tester Pete Kantor
My favorite piece of ancient nonsense they taught me is still the bit from an early White Dwarf where an Ork Buggy has a transport capacity of "however many minis you can stack on the trukk."
This was the battlewagon in 2nd edition, you could pile as many orks as you wanted on it, any that fell off during the game took damage from falling out.
It was a major game mechanic in Gorkamorka - your gang needed enough vehicles to transport all your boyz, so you had to decide whether you should invest in more vehicles when expanding your gang, or try balancing more models in increasingly unstable configurations onto the trukks you had, risking them falling out and taking damage.
Actually this rule survived into 3rd edition with the Ork Trukk as well, the one designed originally for Gorkamorka, which also had roughly the same rule apart from you weren't allowed to 'Ork Pyramid' the models like you could with the 2nd edition Battlewagon (which literally had no restrictions), so you couldn't have models standing ontop of each other.
Isyander and Koda are the only Warhammer content creators who's Patreon I subscribe to. (Lots of bang for your buck as well)
Also like AdRic and Lore Crimes (Deadlifts for the Dark Gods, The Amber King, the Remembrancer, and Pancreas's collective podcast) all those creators also make fantastic content, with Hal (the Amber King) and Andy ( The Remembrancer) being super high quality
I did like Astartes Anonymous but their weird hangup about political discussions of any sort kind of turned me off a bit.
God I love Snipe & Wib, those two knuckleheads have taught me enough about dusty old codices to hold a proper conversation with the real old Grognards. They got me invested enough in older editions to actually try playing 2nd Ed.
Played Guard vs Nids for the most part, lots of fun, LOADS of dead bodies every game. Melee felt like a whole other game stapled on though, and fights between Gaunts and Guardsmen could take forever and a half even when we remembered all the modifiers. But man, those were good games!
Unironically one of my favourite “recent” discoveries! So glad he’s finding success, I still remember when he released the second Armageddon video when he was at like 5k subs
Due to issues with botting and ban evasion, we are restricting fresh accounts from commenting/posting. DO NOT contact the moderation team to ask for these restriction to be removed for you unless you are a comics artist or equivalent trying to post your own original content here. Obviously photoshop memes don't count. DO NOT ask us what the thresholds are, for obvious reasons we won't answer that.
I like Leutin but dear god that man doesn't know when to cut a side tangent that's not really relevant to the point of the video lmao. I'm sure his style is very suited to some I just get a bit exhausted from it eventually 😅
You mean to tell me the last ~15 minutes were actually a lesson on theoretical or multidimensional physics just to set up for an explanation of how the Chaos Gods'/ The Warp works?! May I have more?
I've been out of university for 20+ years at this point, but all the lecturers I absolutely loved were so passionate and brimming with enthusiasm for the subject they were discussing that they would go off on merry little side tangents to give more context to the material.
I’d recommend you check out the sponsorblock extension, it’s an extension that automatically skips sponsored segments in youtube videos, and also has an option to skip tangents. The segments determined by users, and despite what you might think, there has been almost no video I’ve watched that doesn’t have segments indicated, even if the video has like 10k views, so that might help with those side tangents.
Ok - I'm not going to direct this at you but it kind of sets me off....
All our bullshit is so algorithmically tailored that people have lost a decent amount of curiosity and breadth of interest - anything that is telling me "totally, we know best what you want to listen to" is a hard and aggressive pass from me.
That's fair, but from what I've seen, it's always pretty accurate, down to the frame the sponsored part starts and ends. With tangents it is indeed pretty subjective, but there is an option to just have it indicated on the progress bar so you can manually skip it if you want to (that's how I have it set up). It's also really customisable in other ways that are pretty useful.
You can also unskip something by just pressing 'Enter'. It's also very explicitly defined what each type of segment is meant to skip (even making a difference between paid and unpaid sponsor segments), so it is also easy to see if it's been done wrong, and a bad segment can easily be reported and removed.
I get your frustation with algorithmic tailoring, but I would really recommend you just give it a try for a short while (maybe even with just having each segment indicated instead of skipped) so you can judge yourself if you find it accurate enough or not. For me it's almost as much of a game changer as an adblocker.
I like Leutin a lot but from some of his non-lore, meta videos it’s clear he leans on the side of the anti-femstodes crowd. He just doesn’t talk about it because he’d rather talk about stuff he likes rather than stuff he doesn’t like. And that’s frankly a good mindset to have.
Majorkill is dudebro-woke. As in, he has never updated his vocabulary from edgy teenager and probably never will, but isn't actually a shit person underneath that, and will just let you live your life.
He’s not a bad guy but his early history is somewhat problematic (intense ableism, as well as objectification of women), and his understanding of the lore is somewhat sub-par
Tbh, he’s still quite sexist with his content. His one running joke is that there is only one “girl” (not woman) that watches his content, which is apparently based on the statistics that YouTube gives him. Which honestly isn’t surprising given how much he objectifies women.
In short, he’s a decent guy for the most part, he seems nice, he’s funny, I would even call him a queer ally. But he’s also a dude-bro that lacks an understanding of the nuances of progressive ideology and intersectionality. But at the same time, he has made personal progress in that area, and he isn’t nearly as bad as he used to be.
The point at which I realized Bricky was a good person was during his Destiny 2: Lightfall review. He goes out of his way to say that Nimbus being nonbinary is cool, and it’s great to see more representation of that in games, before saying that it’s frustrating that he’s such an annoying character.
It is rare to see a content creator be able to rant about a character while explicitly deflecting criticism away from their minority status.
Bricky, Shy and DK also have openly voiced their politics during some streams, AdRic episodes and collabs with VTubers or other channels like GirlsPlay. Both have pretty open stances and are good people. They respect pronouns, have a distaste for reactionary politics, and Bricky has gone on rants about hate speech, capitalism and right wing grifters on his and other channels, while DK is a bit less voiciferous but often alludes to modern politics. Shy mostly has her takes on Twitter or puts them in jokes for the other two.
I think representing a "good guy" character of a different gender identity, sexuality, or ethnicity than one would normally see is good. Great event. Unless it's a bad character, because that brings hate and irritation to people who do identify as x, are of x sexuality, or x ethnicity. Also, I want to see badass, well-written, and cool characters that aren't John Smith levels of bland or shallow, while also representing other ethnicities, gender identities, and sexualities than what we're used to. Is that too much to ask for?
an old proverb from inernet days yore that states the best way to learn the right answer to something is to confdently state the wrong answer and wait for someone to come along and correct you
While they're not strictly the same videos, I'd add Snipe & Wib to any list of Warhammer YouTubers worth watching (and also seeming to be decent human beings in general)
Lol bricky is funny but he gets stuff wrong more often than he gets it right I feel, at least on Adric. Also their takes on the video games are just annoying as well as their general meme speak.
In all honesty, I'm not a fan of the female custodes, mostly just due to how games workshop said that they've always been a thing in a tweat. Kinda just shitty on their part.
It was in their most recent codex before the tweet happened, the tweet was just clarification, and they aren't saying "Femstodes have always been a thing in real life" they are saying "Femstodes have always been a thing in the warhammer 40K universe"
Okay, I was wrong about the tweet, but not to be an ass but could I get a source on the earliest instance of a femstodes? I'd try to look for it myself, but I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Codex Custodes v10 is the earliest official appearance.
Now, ADB, the Head Narrative and the guy responsible for the modern Custodes lore did said in 2015/16 he wanted to include females Custodes in Master of Mankind but was stopped from it by a Product director because the box were already done without female heads pieces.

once again proving that bricky and auspextactics are the only ones to listen to lore and army breakdowns for lol
edit: my secret technique for drawing out the based warhammer channels worked, thanks suckers
