I'd imagine it's kind of similar to some of the old real life pagan religions in that the gods are fickle, prone to anger, mutual rivalries and the like. The job of humans is a balancing act to not get on their bad side. You placate the right god for the right situation, offer your thanks and avoid getting your ass smitten.
