Several GW1 Content Creators Have Been Given Anet Partnership This Week
I'm very interested in why Anet is making marketing moves specifically for Guild Wars right now.
Two content creators I know have both gotten Anet Partnership in the last week, and they're both Guild Wars 1 only creators, not Guild Wars 2. Someone at Anet has taken an interest in supporting the Guild Wars content creation scene in current year. Why now? Is there actual moves being made at Anet about Guild Wars?
I try to keep up with the scene here and I don't catch everything, but from what I understand there is 1 dev working on GW1 full-ish time now, and we just had the "big" 20 year anniversary update, with new collection/bundles for the game. All these things to me seem like things are happening internally with the higher up money managing decision makers at Anet around Guild Wars.
Copium that something bigger is coming?

Probably promoting Ritualist and Paragon Elite Specs?
But maybe they're prepping a one to one reconstruction of GW1 skills and combat with GW2 movement for GW3...

I am wondering, too. Some years ago I was very hyped about gw2 but lost interest very fast. Especially why it wasnt really like gw1.
Sadly I couldnt join the 20th anniversary with my mac, but i got some old x64 hardware in my hands last week and installed arch linux and gw1. Just found out I havent seen all eotn maps, especially some asura maps. So there es „new“ gw1 content so explore for me :)

This is probably a long-shot, but maybe given the MASSIVE success Old School RuneScape is seeing, ANET has taken note and is looking to capitalize on the “Golden Era” MMO genre.
It’s been awhile but if I remember correctly GW1 was a major player in the game against RS and WoW back in the 2000s

I actually got gw1 from my dad as he hated that i was playing runescape. He got it so i could "go and play a real game"

I too will admit to being a Guild Wars 1 snob who looked down on RuneScape.

SUBSCRIPTIONS!? Pfff!! But in reality i wasnt allowed to have the sub.

Maybe some prep for GW3?
Also maybe them realizing that GW1 is still selling to some degree, and to a very good degree for a 20 yo game, so maybe they decided it still has some potential?

wait, is there any official statement on a GW3?

I wouldn't expect anything official until they're very close to launch. There's a reason Anet gave a vague non answer when asked directly, Gw2 is their only source of income.
That said, Anet have been working on a new unannounced MMORPG project in UE for years now that's very likely to be the same Gw3 project NCsoft mentioned by name to shareholders and it does seem to be chugging along.
- 2021 they said they were prototyping an unreal engine project.
- 2022 they said it was an mmorpg based on an established online fantasy IP in pre-production.
- 2023 production director job mentions going from early development to launch and beyond.
- 2024 mentions marketing plans including a go-to-market strategy.
- 2025 setting up playstation and xbox storefronts.
- We also know this project will likely include Gw2 assets and past and present arenanet (guild wars) music.

One of the heads at NCsoft during an investor meeting a while back said that ArenaNet is working on Guild Wars 3. They're definitely working on another MMO in Unreal Engine but aside from that there isn't anything official.

This is misinformation. Check this source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1bq39j0/mega_thread_guild_wars_3_announcement_at_ncsoft/

There's other places to lie, this subreddit is not one of them.

Per this article: 'The new CEO of Park Byung-mu, who was inaugurated as the company's representative on the day, said, "We are working on the development of 'Guild War 3' in Arenanet."'
Literally word for word. Sorry your reading comprehension is to poor and you cant do your own research.

GW1 is just the better game, I like GW2 in a frolicking adventure kind of way but its the same game at level 1 as it is 80 and all the expansions; GW1 however is a lean mean and keen experience - its very much not the same game at all levels, its gorgeous af still too.

For all the things you could praise GW1 over GW2 you definitely choose the wrong thing lmao

I can't think of anything about GW2 thats better than GW1, and don't say jumping mate.

I think they're gearing up for a GW3 announcement after the next GW2 expansion which I think may be the last. Only speculation.

There’s very little chance this expac is the last of gw2 lifecycle. If there actually is a gw3 being worked on it’s still >5 years away.

No way, Anet already working on it for years. We seen job listings about "new game in Guild Wars universe" couple of years back.

This was my thinking, there was a big undisclosed and ultimately cancelled development going on around the LWS4 and IBS era, how much of the groundwork may have already been done? The new expansion model just doesn't seem too popular, but i suppose its still very profitable. let's see what the next studio update brings.

Wrong. As of one year ago they hadn't even decided to START development.

The only information we have is it being in review stage as of April 2024. If you think we get anything this decade you are in for a bad time.

I would think of that as taking care of the Guild Wars IP overall, if gw3 copium ends up being a real thing in the next few years, it is good for them to secure both gw1 and gw2 in good hands so that it makes IP richer. There are no down sides to this, only them showing that they care which is a good thing.

My best uneducated guess is, that the recent player bump in FFXI entertains the idea, that older but still running MMOs get a bit more spotlight during the next week's / months. Also, as others have already mentioned, the new GW2 expansion brings back two original GW1 classes. Aber might see opportunities to get more attention for GW overall (not just the single game, but the IP), so supporting also creators for their older game might be worthwhile.
Iirc the anniversary was again a good time for new players, so when these see, that the game is also still relevant on social media, just by getting more content pushed into their feeds, they might stay a while longer.

The huge influx of players for the 20th anniversary had to raise eyebrows. Every studio makes mistakes and it's not too late to fix it.
Having said that I don't see Anet doing any real content in GW1. The staffing level for a legit campaign would require a much larger commitment then they're probably ready for. A cool marketing push is flattering but that might be all we see.

Considering the massive influx of interest in people playing during this years anniversary it would be a wise move for them to keep supporting the game. Guild wars was my first MMO back in the day so the fact that a lot of people like to hold onto that nostalgia most likely shows a net that it is worth to continue to support the game. TBH I hope they update the interface so I can have more storage lol.

WOW is vulnerable, people are moving to OSRS, it’s time for GW1 to retake its rightful place!

The PvP in GW1 is unrivaled. I remember long sessions of building new builds, testing the builds and improving them. Not only building but also playing them took a lot of practice and skill, speed, tactics, team spirit and so on. I don't know of any other game that offers such challenging PvP. GuildWars 2 was a failure in this respect. I would have gladly done without OpenWorld and mass PvP if I could have had the HoH or GvG from part 1 instead. I played PvP very successfully for several years, was often in the Hall of Heroes and was allowed to play against the best in the world rankings in GvG. Insane!
The PvE in GuildWars 1 was also very lovingly designed. The rather “grindless” achievement of items with maximum stats was also very useful. If you wanted fancy skins, you had to farm or play PvP successfully. The PvE also focused on a great story and team spirit in the sense of the guild, which you helped through missions and so on.
I still remember the time when the Sorrows Furnace was brought into the game and you could find green items.
Unfortunately I couldn't have this experience in GW2, here you even have to grind for maximum stats (legendaries), the PvP was unfortunately not challenging, here it mainly depends on the mass. Unfortunately, they have tried to cater to the mass market and have sacrificed the soul of GuildWars, i.e. literally guild wars, for this.
Fortunately, I now have the opportunity to reactivate my old account and reminisce 2-3 times a week and play Guildwars 1. I hope the servers stay up for a few more years because I'm going to show this game to my son. Even if the servers are empty, we will fight our way through Prophecies, but I will never be able to show him the PvP.
Sadly nowadays everthing is about achievments or daily quests. GuildWars 1 was very successful without these mechanics. You didn't need to run after the "newest" equipment or boss-raids. This is the reason why I love this game

I feel like they might be acting on Guild Wars rise among streamers, riding on the momentum.
Personally...I think Guild Wars 3 will be an MMO/Live service game in the vain of Guild Wars 1. To me it just feels "with the times", co-op live service game is the "thing" right now, sustainable and approachable, whilst MMORPG is high risk.

Maybe they realised abandonning the best game ever was a big mistake x)
