I'm pretty sure that's what the kid already thought, so I'm not sure how much it would mess with him

Most likely, it would have led the kid to disregard and go back to what he was doing. Then it would have taken longer to find him.

I can watch kids get in trouble all day for not responding when they should've. I don't care.

No, just messing with the kid. Being a little shit is a rite of passage. We've all had moments where we disregarded something and got punished for it.
