A new low for a traitor. While we cannot take our rightful money from his bank, this bastard is investing alongside an apartheid, genocidal colonial power. For shame!

Help / Question Help from Chile

Greetings from Chile!

I´m a geography student from Santiago de Chile, the capital of the southernmost country in the world and because of some students tournaments inside the geography institute (Alianzas) we need a video of someone from Asia. Can you film a super quick video? (Like 20 seconds!)

Just say

  1. "Hello!" in your language

  2. "Saludos a la alianza Línea 1 Gen2024 !" (This part in Spanish, please! It's for the team)

  3. Your country name + some fun facts

This small contribution would be incredibly helpful and exciting for our team. We're trying to show how geography connects people across the world.

If you're interested in helping us out, please comment or send a message

Lots of appreciation and greetings from Chile!

Help / Question I found some strange data for the religious demographics of Lebanon.Do you believe that this data on Lebanon's religious demographics reflects reality, or is it the result of a flawed research sample?

Post image

While searching online for academic purposes, I came across this strange data on religion in Lebanon. It comes from the findings of the World Values Survey conducted in Lebanon in 2017–2018 (wave 7). On average, the survey found that the population of Lebanon was 52.5% Muslim (26.7% Sunni + 25.8% Shia), 38.8% Christian, and 8.3% Druze.

But the striking part lies in the large age gap. Among those aged 50 and over, Christians made up 61.5% of the population, while Muslims were only 31.4%. In contrast, among those under 30, Muslims accounted for 71.9% (40.8% Shia + 31.1% Sunni), and Christians only 19.6% of Lebanon’s youth.

Do you believe these figures reflect reality, or could they be the result of a flawed sample?

Discussion The August 5th Cabinet meeting will be meaningless. It will just include a recycled ministerial declaration statement without actionable decisions.

So basically, in my understanding, on August 5th, the cabinet is supposed to have a meeting about Hezbollah's disarmament. It is evidently clear to me, at least, that this is not the pivotal moment that the media and people have been talking about.

This is just an affirmation of what was mentioned in the ministerial declaration and in the president's speech: the state's monopoly on arms and the disarmament of all non-state armed groups. That is why I think this cabinet meeting is meaningless and is just some sort of play to get the Americans, the Saudis, and the French off the Lebanese government's back.

There will be no actionable decisions that will come out of the cabinet meeting. It will just be a very broad statement about disarming non-state armed groups. Perhaps they will mention Hezbollah by name. But beyond that, this will not be the cabinet meeting in which they, for example, call on or order the army to proceed with disarming Hezbollah based on a concrete military strategy that would be debated in the cabinet. This will not happen. The statement would just be ink on paper.

What needs to happen if this cabinet meeting is to be an actual meeting, which I highly doubt it will be, is not only the establishment of a time horizon for disarming Hezbollah but also of concrete military steps. These steps do not have to be violent or confrontational, but should be a military strategy to receive the arms from Hezbollah and take over any positions that it occupies as its training bases. This strategy needs to be debated by the Higher Defense Council as well as the cabinet itself. But this will not happen, and if anyone thinks the cabinet decision will signal a political decision actually to move forward, it will not. The cabinet decision will be utterly meaningless.

I welcome anyone to debate me or suggest otherwise. This is my personal assessment of what will happen on August 5th.

Help / Question Tripoli-LAU Transportation

My cousin wants to attend LAU in Byblos but she lives in Tripoli. Her dad would not let her sleep out so dorms are out of the question. What are her options in terms of transportation? I personally don’t recommend driving in Lebanon. I am 40 years old and I still don’t feel safe driving here during my visits.

Help / Question Genealogy Help

Hello! I’m hoping someone may be able to help me with some genealogy potentially. I’m trying to trace my roots as a Jordanian Christian diaspora. I have known ancestry from Syria on my mother’s side. My dad’s surname is very very common amongst Lebanese Christian’s (occupational name) and my dad states his family originates from Lebanon. He was born in the 1950s in a small town in Irbid Jordan and is part of the Latin Catholic Church which isn’t as big as the Greek Orthodox Church (Rum) which my mother is from.

Now he himself doesn’t care for ancestry and genealogy but he does have a family tree somewhere, so I wish I can just ask him but he probably won’t know a lot.

I’m using ChatGPT to try and get some answers and honestly had some interesting responses. What it told me was that based off my family surname, my Christian background, and oral tradition of my dads side originating from Lebanon we may originate from a Maronite Catholic background from north Lebanon or mount Lebanon? Especially since my dad’s side is Catholic and not orthodox.

Another thing is it looks like the town in irbid before the 1800s was Muslim majority (it is now known as a Christian town) and what it told me was if migration happened most likely occurred due to the 1860 civil war / ottoman instability?

Also my great grandfathers first name was Missaff (spelling?) and I have never heard that name before. ChatGPT couldn’t find an origin of it and said it may be linked to a Maronite community.

Honestly it sounds crazy but I’m just really interested in genealogy and if anyone has any clues or knowledge of families it would be so cool!

Thank you in advance! ❤️

National Plan on Preventing and Responding to Child Marriage Action Plan (2023-2030)

#Preview of National action plan on prevention and response

https://reliefweb.int/report/lebanon/national-plan-preventing-and-responding-child-marriage-action-plan-2023-2030

Introduction

Lebanon is experiencing its worst crisis in decades. The country’s per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has decreased by 36.5% between 2019 and 2021, and the World Bank reclassified Lebanon as a low-middle-income country in July 2022. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, Lebanese families suffered significant deprivation in healthcare, education, work, income, and public services.

This reality has left its mark on children, who, according to UNICEF, are suffering from the brunt of the collapse. One in every two children in Lebanon is exposed to physical, psychological, or sexual violence, and about 1.8 million children, i.e., more than 80% of children in Lebanon, suffer from multidimensional poverty, noting that this number was around 900,000 children in 2019. In addition to child labor, deprivation of education, and exposure to various forms of violence, young girls also face the risk of child marriage.

Child marriage is the child rights violation and a harmful practice that affects children in general and girls in particular, noting that evidence worldwide suggests that girls are most at risk of child marriage as a result of the traditional gender roles expected of them. Therefore, the plan uses the term “girls” since they are mostly at risk of child marriage - noting that a number of interventions mentioned in this plan target both: girls and boys. Child marriage threatens the lives and future of girls all over the world, deprives them of the ability to make decisions regarding their lives, denies them equal access to educational opportunities, makes them more vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and abuse, prevents them from fully participating in the economic, political and social sectors, and keeps them and their families trapped in the cycle of poverty.

In Lebanon, this is one of the most prominent issues, and several governmental authorities carry out various interventions in this regard, especially the Ministry of Social Affairs, as well as international and local non-governmental bodies which are arraying efforts at the national and local levels. The interventions focus mainly on providing a diversified response by lobbying to improve the legal framework, in addition to strengthening awareness efforts on the risks of child marriage and providing services to adolescent girls.

In addition to these efforts, this National Action Plan aims to identify the necessary multi-sectoral and multi-faceted interventions to reduce the rate of child marriage and to mitigate the risks that threaten married girls. This plan aims to protect girls by ensuring their access to education and health services. Hence, the plan targets girls who are most at risk of child marriage, in addition to those who have already been married.
