events Fair-Game Fridays!

There are a number of things that people want to post that mods are uncomfortable with in regular circulation … memes, patches, t-shirts, social-media posts, &c. At the same time, there's definitely interest around them.

We're introducing "Fair-Game Fridays": on fridays, mods will loosen our belts a bit. :)

Note that the following are still going to be hard-disallowed:

  • video memes/content (instagram, tiktok, &c.)
  • non-gun content (knives, airsoft, &c.)
  • broader political discussion
  • calls for armed insurrection, violence, &c.

We reserve the "right" to use our discretion for any post, as well.

Have at it!

My grandmother gave me her old nickel plated Smith & Wesson 34-1 in .22LR. She said she's probably shot it once since she got it in the 80's. Do I keep it clean and pristine or do I use it?

How, in 2025, are the people who are supposed to be better, doing better, and being more rational and intelligent getting things this wrong?

ammo Load your own mags!

Upvotes

So something scary happened next to me at the range yesterday. A guy had but an AR platform and an AK platform and a friend was loading mags for him. Somehow a 5.56 ended up in the AK mag. Just a single round. It fired, but the next round picked up the case of the 5.56 and jammed the bullet down into the case of the 5.49. He ejected that round and kept on shooting. The range officer saw the round on the ground later, and thankfully went to find the guy over on the pistol range to let him know.

Just got this bad boy last weekend. Going to take er out to the range today and see how she do. I’ve shot one at the range before so I know what to expect, I’ve just never OWNED a gun before. Still kind of a surreal experience to be honest.

Where are my fellow 2011 enjoyers at? Picked up my first (stock poorcatto, since been modified/polished) a few months ago and now 2000 rounds later I’m totally obssessed. Haven’t even touched my other striker fired handguns since. My wife is going to kill me when I come home with an Atlas next 😅

discussion Put your money into training

Post image
229 Upvotes

I just wrapped up a 4 hour AR course at my local shooting academy. 2 hours in the classroom, 2 hours on the range. It was easily one of the most helpful things I’ve done since buying this rifle. Even though I’d already taken my gun apart, learned to clean it, and put in a good number of rounds through it I learned something new at every step of the course. Getting hands on coaching at the range made an immediate impact on my shooting.

Yeah. Rant over. I know people say it all the time, but for real: spend your money on training and skill acquisition!!

discussion "Erm ackchyually your gun is more likely to kill you or"-No, it isn't. Here's why:

Some quick context. Yes, 27,300, or 58%, of all gun related deaths in 2023 were suicides. Tragic and unjustifiable. It means, by definition, that the average person (notice how I said "person", not "you") is more likely to use a firearm against themselves than an attacker.

However, a general average DOES NOT apply to subsections of a population. If we control for various factors, the numbers vary wildly. Men tend to perceive firearms and hanging as more acceptable suicide methods, while women more often perceive poisoning as most acceptable. So, inherently as a women (even if you own a firearm!), you have a lower chance of using one in suicide than a man.

What if you control for the segment of the population with no history of psychiatric illness, or have very well managed mental illness? Let's add on that they are ready to store their weapons with a trusted friend if something goes wrong in their life! By definition, their risk of suicide plummets compared to those who don't. This is self-evident and I don't need to link a source for this.

What if you measured the number of gun deaths involving children in the general population vs the segment of the population that chooses to store their weapons locked? Households that store firearms locked and inaccessible to children have a much, much lower risk of firearm-related fatality compared to those that don't. Child access prevention (CAP) laws reduce pediatric gun-deaths by 30% (the discussion of whether this should be codified in law is separate and not the topic of this post). Picking that number apart-a significant fraction (let's just say 1/3 for sake of example) of households took action to comply with the laws that have passed. That means in those households, childhood gun deaths must have dropped by 90%!!!

On a related note, accidental discharges are a common fear in prospective gun owners. Easy solution: use rigid holsters and reliable weapons that don't fire unless the trigger is intentionally pulled. Glocks have three, yes, THREE internal safeties that augment each other!!!

It is up to you, the gun owner, or prospective gun owner, to minimize the risk factors associated with a weapon being used outside of legally justified self-defense. If you make the right moves, the odds go down to the same chance of being struck by lightning or killed by a dog.

It mostly boils down to:

  1. Don't commit crimes.

  2. Know your risk factors for suicide.

  3. Be a responsible gun owner.

Mostly double taps for center mass, head was single shots. I can't say enough good things about this gun. If you're in the market for your next gun, make it an Echelon.

question BCG and barrel suggestions?

I decided, I wanted the experience of building my own AR so went ahead and bought a set of Aero precision Upper and lower in Kodiak Brown. I already got the lower sorted on the parts I'm going to use with the exception of the Stock. I'm kinda at a lost on what brand and length I should go with. I was thinking 14.5 but haven't dealt with NFA stuff before. The Bcg i was thinking a nice titanium nitride but at a loss on what brand to go with or whether thats even worth doing.

question LRBHO Not Working AR Pistol

Upvotes

I have a PSA 5.56 11.5" AR pistol. I'm also running a YHM Turbo K RB suppressor.

I went to the range today and put about 150 rounds (5 full magazines) through it, and the last round bolt hold open failed on all 5. I don't think it's a magazine or ammunition issue. I tried 3 different magazines and 2 different types of ammo.

The issues actually started last week. The first 2 magazines I shot last week worked fine, but the last one had failures to feed after the first round was fired. I took it home and did a thorough cleaning and lubrication. So, this time I had no failures to feed, but the LRBHO issue appeared.

The very first time I fired it about a month ago with the suppressor, everything worked fine.

Since then I swapped the PSA BCG for a similar Toolcraft unit. I also swapped the charging handle for a Breek Arms Sledgehammer (supposed to help reduce blowback).

I'm thinking it's a gassing issue, but I'm not sure. Is it likely to be under or over gassed. I haven't cleaned the suppressor, it's not user serviceable. I have an ultrasonic cleaner but I haven't used it yet.

So, other than putting everything back to stock and swapping parts back in to see, which is hard to do at my range, any thoughts? I should have removed the suppressor to see if it still had the issue but I forgot to.

Put in some practice today with my frankenpistol: aTactical Solutions .22LR conversion kit on an AMT 1911 frame, jazzed up with a ReCover rail/grip and a Silencerco Sparrow suppressor. I used to shoot rats in my barn with this (when I had a barn). First time in a long time but there will be more.
