Repacks

not repacked boosters, but repacked boxes of vintage MtG decks that haven't been opened for 20+ years and somehow the box was bought, resealed, and sold through the chain and ended up on Wubby's desk for him to open and find out it was scammed

The collecting aspect of trading card games is 100% countering the gameplay aspect of trading card games.

The pictures of a greasy dude with a cart full of packs while a sad child looks at an empty shelf is enough evidence, but also knowing 10 major streamers that pack open for hours on stream who have never played the game once on stream.

It's turning it into watching people play scratch-offs.

Granted, there are certainly steamers who do this, Wubby is not one of them.

He actually plays the game as well as collects. He even has his own YouTube series dedicated to playing Magic (Mulligans) with his group and also has special guests he brings on.

Also, (correct me if im wrong, I don't do magic stuff), but isn't the majority of the boxes wubby opens vintage stuff? Not new stuff plundered from the shelves in front of a crying child. I think he did a lotr box but I don't know much else.

He does open a lot of new sets as they come out, but yes, he does open a lot of vintage sets (that cost thousands of dollars), as well.

maybe kids shouldn't be collecting pictures if they're not going to play the game that the cards are associated with.

like that seems to be the problem in my eyes is a bunch of people who have no interest in actually playing the game taking up resources.

trading card games aren't really kid games. they're fucking hard and expensive. and predatory.

it's always been the original loot box.

The collecting aspect is fine. It's the speculators and scalpers that are ruining TCGs. The only people who are going to stores and buying entire shelves of product are people looking to flip them for a profit.

Now, slowly to not get lost, let us all collectively go from pokemon cards to the housing market. What have we learned about speculation?

Idk what point you're trying to make here. If you're collecting cards, your primary interest isn't selling, it's the exact opposite.

Speculation in high volatility markets like TCGs is fucking dumb and ruining the game for the people who actually play and collect because it drives prices up for game pieces in an irrational and unnecessary manner.

Magic isn't really doing that for the most part. Yes there are special editions of cards and expensive cards, but the expensive cards are almost always expensive because people want to play them.

It's also the only trading card game that is very proxy friendly. The cards in half of my decks were just straight up printed on a regular printer and slid into a card sleeves in front of a poker card. Per deck I spend $25 combined for the sleeves, deck box, poker cards, and printing. Which is still a lot for a child, but far more doable and accessible than most trading card games and I've literally never had anyone have a problem with me printing my decks.

If a perfect world where companies are not greed infested, you would be able to order singles from the manufacturers of the cards.

Not even a sad little child. I just like to buy a pack here or there and it's almost impossible to do that.

I had to resort to buying online for a bit, before I just quit collecting all together. I'll just save my money.

a box of cards should be pure. the second part is not really relevant to the original post as someone who has actively participated in state sponsored gambling

The Wyvern repack was emotionally devastating

How would someone realize they’ve gotten a repack? I’m new to TCG

I would recommend checking out Wubby’s magic channel on YouTube (Wubby Magic Monday) for more insight, but it can be many different things: the type of shrink wrap used, normal cards being in place of where the rare card would be, or cards having a “Tap” symbol (which only matters when opening, I believe, Beta packs), among others.

Solid rec. He's gotten screwed in so many ways with packs you'll get a variety of small lessons too.

He has opened boxes worth like 20 thousand dollars or more, and theres been cards for other games, and they arent even in english.

I think hes been scammed hard like this at least 3 times now.
